    Steyn out.

  • 272

Guess it’s better to lose now than in the knock out stages.

    @ Nama:
Our over reliance on ab and amla my friend… We have no other resistance when the pressure is on.

  • 274

    Morkel gone now.

Like i have been saying all thread is that the scoreboard pressure is huge. On none more so than south africa…

Where do we go to from here if verne is innured? Behardient cant bowl because of his back parnell is parnell

Our approach was entireley wrong chasing. Our running was poor.

But yes hopefully this is that second and final poor batting performance by ab and amla.

Well, he still averages 38 vs Aus, 63 vs West Indies, 39 vs Pakistan.

Of the big guns, his average against England and NZ is poor. So, that makes your statement “Like a deer in headlights against top teams” about him totally untrue.

Miller run out. 6 down now. How long before the dreaded “C-word” will surface?

I kept the windies average in. But not really a BIG GUN.

Duminy scored 2 of his 3 50s against aus when he had that super good purple patch in 2008.

No one can take that away from him. It was against good oposition… But thats all he has.

Since then its been minnow bashing bangla, ireland, zim, the netherlands and even the windies… Best is 39 vs pakistan.

    All over skedover.

    India win by 130 runs.

  • 278

Oh my word what has happened here. Complete capitulation it seems. Congratulations India. Oh well hopefully this our bad game for the tournament out of the way.

    @ MacroBull:
When Dhoni came in earlier today, they showed a stat that showed that he is the most prolific run scorer between overs 40 and 50. Duminy featured in that stat as well coming in at no. 8 or 9, I think. That shows you that he is doing the job expected of him as a no. 6 batsman in ODI’s.

Three of his centuries came when he batted at no. 3 and 4. He is not likely to score a 100 batting at 6 unless we have a dismal failure at the top like against Zim last week.

    @ MacroBull:
#275 Philander would be a hard player to replace. Abott in for bowling but that weakens batting. Maybe they take a chance and parachute Elgar in to get more batting options and pick Abott instead of Parnell, or take a bigger chance and bring Albie Morkel in, with Elgar and Morkel in good domestic nick but Morkel would have to play better than he has at international level in the past.

  • 281

    @ Nama:
Today he had a chance though didnt he? Had a few of them.

Im also sure plenty of those runs came against the minnows.

Look the truth is i dont hack anyone in our team except ab and amla to win games against the top5 teams… But duminy is a minnow basher and the stats proves it. Its frustrating how well he plays against them but not against the top teams which proves he has the skills and talent… But more than often his temperament fails him.

  • 282

    @ Bullscot:
Albie has a real “fight” in him. Our slow bowlers went well today so maybe even bring phangiso in. Im not sure how behardiens back is.

Now matter how we pick we will seem to be eithe a batsman or a bowler short… Actually elgar wont be that bad. But looking outside the squad will no doubt be the last option.

  • 283

I am not so freaked out, it’s better to have one off game in the pools than in the knock outs.

  • 284

    @ Stormersboy:

It is better to have no expectations of the Proteas. The chances of them winning 3 games in a row against top opposition in the playoffs are remote to put it mildly. They talk a good game though (” Our top 4 is the best in the world” – AB de Villiers)

  • 285

Jinne, the Ama-Blomme kakked big time today against India!

I thought India was very good, in all off the batting and bowling and fielding stakes.

  • 286

Macrobull. You are wrong wrt Duminy.

    Duminy is class. Topman.

  • 287

    Few bleakness supporters here. Fml.

I never said he isn’t class. The record simply shows that he save his best for the minnows while saving his less than average for top teams.

ICC champions trophy (No minnows) he averages 11.

World cup he averages 49, BUT if you take into account he scored 214 runs out of 345 against Zim and Ireland he averages but merely 22 runs at the world cup.

He can still score runs against the minnows which proves he has the ability, but he has been found wanting in the mental strength department since his wonderful series in 2008… I really really really hope he can change my opinion though…

  • 289

“mental strength department” – I say this because he would often score 15-20 runs and be middling the ball, and just play a silly shot to get himself out, that is basically the summary for most of his career.

Case and point our world record run chase attempt against India.

  • 290

    @ MacroBull:
Those stats make for a sobering statement.

  • 291

We are batting Philander at 7 and Parnell at 8 when most teams play a specialist at 7 to finish games.
    Surely
    Amla,
    Rossouw,
    Faf,
    AB,
    Miller,
    Duminy,
    De Kock,
    Steyn,
    Abbott,
    Morkel,
    Tahir
    is our best combo.

  • 292

Macro, the use of stats to continue underrating a guy
that has played such a crucial role in various games at various times
that fit into the culture and has the best work ethic of probably all the Proteas and
that put so much into the game is not a cool effort on your side.

Generally you are not inclined to condescend players but have some rationale and
not call a guy like Duminy a minnow basher. that’s rather disrespectful all things considering.

If the guy is class it means he will be counted when the chips are down. In the final in WC I would have faith in JPD to do whats needed more than most other players. And his so-called record against any specific team does not influence that support.

  • 293

    @ shooter:
Work ethic does not amount to success when the pressure is on.

Fact is, JPD saves his best for minnows while guys like AB and Amla saves their best for the best teams. you can almost be sure that JPD will score 50+ in the next game, or at the very least against Ireland.

I gave and give him credit for 2008 in Australia, he looked unstoppable, since then his average vs them has come down and will continue to do so.

Ill support JPD as much as you and I will also foolishly believe he can perform in a WC final, but i would not put any money on it.

  • 294

    @ shooter: @ 291.
Are you then relying on Duminy to bowl 10 overs? If any 1 bowler has a bad day, or gets smacked for a good few runs, then there may be problems. Who else are the part time bowlers in that lineup? Can Miller or Rossouw bowl?

  • 295

David Wiese would be a great choice. He will do well on NZ pitches. Can finish a game and bowl a few overs. We don’t have big hitters in our middle order.

  • 296

Fly him in now… before it is too late. Send Behardien home with Philander…

  • 297

De Kock must open, coz he is not a minnow basher, but rather an Indian basher 🙂

On a more serious note, de Kock (not Rossouw), must open coz QdK is an opener, is more established in the ODI team, & deserves the ODI opening batsman position more than does Rossouw. QdK’s flamboyant style (btw similar to that of Rossouw) is a bit of gamble, but when he comes off it makes it all worthwhile. Also, Faf at #3 provides stability if & when an opener fails early on.

If Riley R is selected as an additional batsman, I reckon he should nominally bat at #4. AB should be penciled in at #5, but should operate as a floating batsman coming in from about over 28-30, enabling him to establish himself for a blast off in the final 15 overs … It will be great to have AB batting from over 28 to 50, & a substantial portion of it together with Miller &/or JP.

BTW, there is no sense (poor form) in calling JP names – he is one of the most important players in the Proteas team.

It is difficult to envisage the Proteas fielding only 4 frontline bowlers & 7 specialist batsmen – that split would’ve been an (even greater) disaster vs India when Philander broke down. In the unlikely event of that selection happening, JP & AB! would have to share the 5th bowler’s overs. Very risky! Fills me with apprehension.

And seriously, I don’t think Parnell is of International standard. And I have serious doubts about Behardien as well.

We unfortunately need a Klusener-type player in this team, but the cupboard is bare.

  • 298

I think with the options available, it will be highly controversial if philander got injured and we flew morkel/wiese over to replace parnell in the team.

More than anything if Verne is ruled out he will be replaces by lopsy.

  • 299

JPD is still crucial to the team because of being a bowling option.

  • 300

    @ Angostura:
Calling JP a minnow basher isn’t calling him names, it implies he scores most of his runs against minnows and often gets big scores against minnows… hence he is a minnow basher.

It is not disrespectful, its reality.
