Francois Steyn

Francois Steyn

Frans Steyn was released from the Springbok squad at his own request on Tuesday and will not appear in Saturday’s match against Wales at Growthpoint Kings Park, Durban.

The player advised SARU officials that that he did not wish to be considered for the Castle Lager Incoming series. “The environment in the Springbok squad is fantastic and I would like to state categorically that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my team-mates is very good,” said Steyn.

Steyn – who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of Vodacom Super Rugby Series – said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future.

He indicated he would be available for the Cell C Sharks once the June internationals are completed.

“I have spoken at length to Frans and we are happy to accede to his request,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

“He has asked for some time to consider his international playing future and we must respect that. Let me make it clear that he has not retired from international rugby, but he has requested a break from it.”

Roux added that Steyn had asked for privacy at this time.

“This is not an ideal situation, but, in other instances, sudden player absences through injury are not uncommon and I’m sure Heyneke and the selectors will adapt to his unavailability. Frans is now out of the squad and team management will respect his wish for privacy by not speculating on his decision or his likely return.”

And you believe that drivel from a spin doctor?

  • 91

Anyway, he is history now….hy moet nou maar maak soos Roggoff Conceited
He will not be remembered as Springbok legend, not by me…
There are more than enough young guns waiting in the wings….
    Enter Pollard and Goose.

    @ cane:

    It’s all about the Benjamins.

Expect some serious booing when he runs out for the Guppies at other grounds in SA.

Mac Maakgeraas is now employed by SARU?

  • 95

Guess it’s not a surprise is it?

His role model walks out on contracts if he doesn’t get the Aussie job and will renage on the Shark contract in a minute if he gets a better offer somewhere else.

    @ nortierd:
No Norti, I don’t believe it, but the truth is perhaps yet to be revealed.

And who the F. are the Benjamins?

    Dollars Cane, dollars.

The truth won’t be so difficult to believe, he prefers playing for White above his country.

if money is at the center of this, then the blame should squarely be on saru or whoever made steyn these promises.

if I was promised a certain pay at my job and by the end of the month it my paycheck is not close to what was promised to me then I would tell my employer to fark off no matter how much I enjoy my job.

Ill stand in fransies corner for this one (rugby is a job just like any job and you may only get 5 years to do it, and steyns career might not last much longer so obviously he would be pissed off)

So would anyone on this site.

  • 101

Who the fuck are the Benjamins?

This is what happen when you spend your entire life within the confines of Lower Hutt.

  • 102

    Helllooooooooooo

If one has a National Contract (signed, sealed and delivered and of course signed and agreed to by yourself as well) and you choose NOT TO PLAY for the national Side, surely you do not deserve your National Contract any longer.

Would be interesting to know what the contract and the clauses look like, those dealing with Breach Of Agreement, Performance Clauses ect….

It does not matter how one spins this issue, whether around money or around discourse with SARU or around whatever, there are better ways to resolve disputes than the Prima Donna Route which France Steyn took.

Once it revolves around money and not around the honour of playing for the Springboks… and that applies to every player eligible to play for the Bokke, then I am afraid you are no longer needed or required, no matter who you are or how good you are.

I hope Frans NEVER plays for the Springboks again… never ever!

    @ grootblousmile:
whats to stop saru from not paying these guys at all, they just give the springboks hats for every test (because simply being selected is enough honour)

  • 104

why do tennis players even get prize money for winning tennis majors? surely just winning wimbledon should be enough?

  • 105

    @ MacroBok:

The money is good enough for everyone else why should he be any different ?

  • 106

    @ gunther:
we do not know the terms and conditions of each player though least of all steyn. the timing of this is all bad form from steyn, but if saru made promises they are not upholding then we should rally agaonst saru just as much as we are crucifying steyn.

  • 107

apparently steyn brought this up more than 2 weeks ago, but it seemed like saru relied on “he will do everything we say because representing the springboks is an honour” lol amateurs

  • 108

It will be interesting to get the full story.

  • 109

This is bad news we wanted him selected for the Bokke.

  • 110

It’s the modern era. Rugby has become professional and every player has a financial worth and has every right to carry on his profession as he thinks best. That being said, I am sure that Frans Steyn is being well rewarded by SARU.

Steyn has every right to withdraw from the squad if there is a dispute and he feels he is being underpaid; it is just as much SARU’s right to refuse to agree to every demand made by Steyn and to instead look at what terms work for them.

Steyn will obviously now be quite unpopular with his Bok teammates and South Africans in general, but what really does concern one is the extremely poor timing of his decision – during the week of the build-up to the first Test against Wales. That I think is what probably pisses most of us off.

  • 111

    @ NZINCHINA:
the problem here isnt steyn. it the fact that IF other players are also unsatisfied then more might follow. Saru has a big problem if they are not following through on terms and agreements with other players as well.

    if this is the case.

    @ NZINCHINA:

I have been to Wainuiomata on some occasions. And they don’t have benjamins either.

    😉

    @ WP Till I Die:
the timing is bad. if you dont go on strike at a critical stage them no one is going to listen. maybe saru has known about this dispute for months now?
