    The New BIGGG Southern Sun is in Church Street, almost opposite the Union Buildings… between the New Union Hotel and the Bell Hotel.

    Fark, we used to drink there in the old days, and if you wanted to watch bar fights, the Bell Hotel was a good option…. hahaha

    @ grootblousmile:
    haha as a student I went the Zepplins every Wednesday… The CBD was chilled at night.

  • 33

    31 @ grootblousmile:
    When we were students at Tuks, many, many, very many moons ago… we went to the Bell Hotel one night… picked up 2 “lekker squeezes” and we were in the car with them on the way to “Lovers Lane” when the 2 chicks told us they were married and whether we minded… hehehe

    Overjoy

  • 34

    @ grootblousmile:
    All those bar fights moed to PTA north? baroombas or something.

  • 35

    28 @ MacroBull: Stanza Bopape Street…as it’s now known…

    Laughed to myself; the sign at the hotel’s public parking reads: :”If car park is full, please use entrance in Beatrix Street around the corner”

    Lo & behold you drive (ride) around the corner but you can’t find Beatrix Street, only Stanza Bopape…

    You probably won’t recognise more than half the streets you used to know and I find it so strange how they can change a name like “Church Street” yet “Pretorius Street” is still “acceptable”… but I don’t really feel like thinking about such trivial matters on a Friday afternoon.

    On a lighter note, I was most impressed to see the SAAF practising helicopter formation-flying for tomorrow’s “parade”…did you you know that the Air Force has 14 helicopters that can still fly?

    Amazed

  • 36

    Then again, any bar in the country with a “brandy special” will often hae bar fights

  • 37

    @ BrumbiesBoy:
    Do they even have 14 pilots?

  • 38

    37 @ MacroBull: I thought the exact same thing; they probably borrowed a couple of Bob’s.

  • 39

    32 & 34 @ MacroBull:
    Obviously we are from different generations because Zepplins and Baroombas do not ring a bell for me.

  • 40

    GBS is lucky, when he went to school there wasn’t much History to learn.

    Happy-Grin

  • 41

    40 @ BrumbiesBoy:
    We did not have “History” as a subject, just a lesser subject called “Making History”!

    Delighted

    It was a very practical course!

  • 42

    @ BrumbiesBoy:
    Last time I went to Southern Sun in beatrix street was when the cheetahs team was there… anyway long story short it was such a mission to get in there, and the people there don’t care, people in traffic would just start reversing to get into an entrance. I think I found parking there at the back eventually. The guy who owns the KFC there across the road must be a millionaire.

    @BrumbiesBoy
    If you are really desperate for a nice Gravatar, I will send you a naked selfie of myself, from the waist down.
    Have you heard of the term “hung like a horse”

  • 44

    @ BrumbiesBoy:
    haha GBS was there to switch the lights on.

    @ grootblousmile:
    Sorry Zepplins was an alternative/metal/goth club, was crazy. When were you at tuks? My brother says many many moons ago the venue was a club called stardust Pondering

  • 45

    44 @ MacroBull:
    I got my degree at Tuks end of 1989 already… probably before you were out of nappies…

    Getting back to yesterday I couldn’t believe how the centre of P-town has deteriorated in the three-odd years since I’ve been there…filth, mess, noise you name it & I’m pretty sure the Ponies will pick a spot elsewhere next time they come to town…
    Mind you, after last week’s performance they were lucky to be put up in a ****-hotel & should’ve rather been accomodated in the nearest Formule 1 hovel!!!

    Strange you mention that.
    I have been in the vicinity, at DIRCO since last week, and then the town was still spotless. Makes you wonder what sort of riff raff they allow into our country just for the sake of a rugby match.
    I hope they clean up their mess and take the dents out of the taxi doors before they fly back to Oz

    The Pretoria Earthquake

    A major earthquake, measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Pretoria,SA.
    in the early hours of last Thursday morning. News of the disaster was
    swiftly spread by the distressed barking of the area’s
    65,000 unchipped Dobermans, Pitbulls, Staffies and various unidentifiable
    cross-breeds, while dazed victims were seen wandering around aimlessly
    muttering “What de fook wus dat”?
    .
    .
    The earthquake decimated the town, causing $1099.99 worth of damage.
    Several priceless collections of mementos from McDonalds were written off
    and the Pretoria Railway Station car park was damaged beyond repair, with three acres
    of historically important burnt-out cars thrown into chaos.

    Radio Bullsville reported that hundreds of residents were confused, bewildered,
    and having difficulty in coming to terms with the fact that something
    interesting had actually happened in Pretoria. One resident, 15 year old mother
    of three, Tiara van der Merve said “I was still shaking when I was watching
    Oprah the next day.” Rising to the challenge, locals were determined to
    carry on business as usual, and lootings, muggings and car crime continued
    virtually without interruption.

    Relief Efforts:
    CAN YOU HELP?????? Please respond generously to our appeal for donations of
    goods to help the victims of this disaster. Clothing and footware are needed
    most of all – especially:

    * Baseball caps
    * Hoodies
    * Tracksuit tops (his or hers)
    * Bully Boy Jerseys.
    * Nike shoes.

    Culturally sensitive food parcels are harder to put together, but your
    efforts will make a difference. Microwave meals, baked beans, chippies,
    ice-cream and cans of Castle lager are ideal. Please do not send
    anything that needs peeling. Most urgently required is tinned dog food, and
    please throw in some extra cans for the hungry pit-bulls and dobermans.

    Remember:

    * $2 buys a standard blue ballpoint for filling in compensation claims.

    * $10 buys chips, chicken nuggets and blue fizzy drink for 3 toddlers or
    2 pre-schoolers.

    * $30 will pay for a pack of 20 ciggies and a lighter to calm a child’s
    nerves.

    * $40 will pay for a pouch of tobacco, a box of matches and a packet of
    papers for the older generation.

    * $50 will buy enough tik to settle down the adults into their normal
    levels of inertia.

    * $100 will buy sufficient spray cans in various colours to restore the
    damaged “Street Art” on shop fronts and public buildings, and to redecorate
    the local motorway bridges.

    Please do not send tents for shelter. The sight on TV news of such flash
    housing may cause discontent in the unaffected Joburg communities.

    @ MacroBull: I was sitting having a cooldrink by the pool when from a distance I saw three (unknown) Brumbies heading down the escalator to go for a walk…

    I thought to myself, “Hmmm, this shouldn’t take long”, & sure enough they were back within 10 minutes!

    Crazy Crazy Crazy

  • 49

    44 @ grootblousmile:
    No I am just thinking we my brother started law at tuks, but I think he started in 91-92

  • 50

    @Cane
    That earthquake was a doozy.
    Apparently it hit the trailer park where BrumbiesBoy stays as well.
    It’s reported that there it left at least R200 000 worth of improvements to the joint

  • 51

    46 @ nortierd: Not the parts I was in; I rode in past the prison then turned right about six blocks down from the “Sasol garage and carried on from there where it got worse & worse; I’m by no means saying the centre of Jozi’s any better, in fact they’re both ****-holes IMHO.

  • 52

    Cheers okes, see ya later

  • 53

    49 @ MacroBull:
    I finished matric in 1982, did a year at Tuks (engineering – but let’s be realistic and call it my party year), before doing my 2 years National Service in the SA Armed Forces (Air Defence Artillery) in ’84 & ’85.

    So, I started studying Law in 1986 and within 4 years had done my full 4 year degree, my 2 years full time Articles and passed my Attorney’s Admission Exams… and got married in between.

    So, I basically condensed 7 Years of study into 4 years… and so had effectively made up my 2 years National Service and the Party Year of 1983.

    @ grootblousmile:
    ironi ally my study history was the other way around with every year being a party year haha

  • 57

    @ BrumbiesBoy:
    Change 25 words on that post and you can insult anyone, anywhere in the world.
    😉

  • 58

    56 @ MacroBull:
    Fark, how many beers have you drunk and how many little Mini Macro’s did you make?

  • 59

    57 @ cane:
    There is just 1 problem with that story… Pretoria is not in an earth quake belt or unstable region or “Rim of Fire” area such as New Zealand.

    In fact for decades and decades the local people talked about the earth quake’s in the Cape somewhere in 1969, where some loose plaster was shaken off the walls in the houses where the domestic romantic action had not done so already anyway, and where a regular good morning fart would register heavier on any scale.

    SA is lucky, no monsoons, no earth quakes, mild weather, the odd little flash flood here or there… but no major natural catastrophies.
