Ander raad was:

#10 Snoek, don’t mistake hopeful optimism with objectivity. Anyway, Piet Visagie voted 6 times… 😉

    6@ Snoek:
I will be supporting the individuals and enjoying their individual moments. Looking for form, missed tackles etc.

I have stepped away from supporting any specific team for some years now, and therefor enjoy to see how the One eyed bulls, The poaching Sharks, The wimpering Western Province, The losing lions and the unfortunate Cheetahs have a go at each other every year.

The best one I have heard yet was when A Bulls supporter bragged about his Bulls team having only lost one match in the super 14 that year and it must have been very embaressing to be a lions supporter, as they came dead last on the log.

I promptly reminded this bull, it should be more embaressing to know that the only game the lions won that year was against the Bulls.

So I sit here on the fence, don’t get upset anymore, and rag everyone from the sideline.

Now being a springbok supporter however, that is the hardest thing to do.

I am reminded of the prayer.

    God, grant me the serenity
    To accept the things I cannot change;
    Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

To see what has happened to my beloved springbok team during the last 12 months, it is very difficult to attain serenity due to the fact that I am powerless to change what is so obviously wrong.

So I can remain objective when it is franchise rugby, I attempt my level best to be objective when the boks play, and hopefully most of the time I achieve the mental status of serenity.

You can’t argue the stats, we will fight you tooth and nail for our God given status as underdogs, and then when we win we will call it a miracle that our poor team whom does not have the class of the mighty Bulls and WP have somehow overcame the near impossible, and played like the Gods, to lift the most coveted trophy in world rugby, the Currie Cup.

    😉

    @ biltongbek:
You are one in a million, i have never met a South African rugby supporter who do not favour a specific team, even if it is a different team evey year.

It’s a new concept for me to ponder upon.

Hehe!! Having spent many a night in Magoo’s discussing rugby, that sounds about right! BTW is Magoo’s still open?

  • 17

Piet, ek het ma net jou been getrek broer. Moet net asb nie die Vrystaters so te lyf ganie. 😉

  • 18

    @ fender:
    Where is Magoo’s? In Durban?

Not all Sharks supporters are from Durban, KZN is actually a bit bigger than just Durban.

    I’m Staying 380KM from Durban in KZN, and we don’t have a Magoo’s. 🙂

  • 19

    Smething to ponder:

The second mouse gets the cheese…….

  • 20

Sjoe! Geography never was my strong point…. 😉

Magoo’s is/was a legendary pub on Durban’s Golden Mile. It’s popularity really exploded after the bomb went off – I kid you not!

The last time I saw the legendary Kenny Henson (RIP)on guitar was at Magoo’s. Man, what a player…

    21@ Snoek:
Buy him an acoustic Ibanez. From what I was told it is one of the top three manufactured guitars available. You can also get them to plug into an amplifier to enhace the sound. But make sure he can play the thing before you buy him the amplifier.

On pondering the value of serenity.

Rugby is a sprt with many differnet nuances. Supporters have their favorite parts of rugby. Some love to see tries scored, other enjoy the tackle or the breakdowns. One thing most of them have in common is when their team does something well they see it, but yet when the opposition steals a ball at the break down they were offside etc.

I watch every tackle and the physicalty with which these guys take each other out, the harder the better. I enjoy every try, every individualistic brilliant move, and of course all the mistakes.

So ponder this my dear friend. You only enjoy half the game!

  • 26

Snoek, great news about your son!

Look, most guitar manufacturers make entry-level guitars these days. Look out for names like Ibanez (shot Biltong!) but also Cort, Tanglewood, Crafter. Be prepared to spend close on R2000 and don’t foget that clip-on tuner (another R200!). Of course, you might want to spend a little more and buy a Fender? 😉

Also scan Gumtree on-line for second hand ones although given your platteland residence any saving might have to go towards petrol to Durbs/Pmb and back, hey?

Anyway, get him to a teacher or better still get yourselves a teacher and study and play together! It a life-long adventure, man.

Let me know where I can help, ok?

I had a guitar once… but there was very little music in my fingers… all I could play was the fool.

There is not much music in my voice either, but damnit I love music… and the appreciation is there!

  • 29

Talking about music…. was at the Rapport Vonk Afrikaans Music Awards last night (till this morning), had a whale of a time!

Wonderful event and such a good opportunity to reward the Industry for the joy they provide on a daily basis.

    @ fender:
Thanks Fender, will look out for those makes. I was thinking of joining him, and you might have tipped that scale for me to actually bying two guitars. Maybe one day we can “Jam” together.

    Did i say that right?
