In 1891, just before the departure of the British Isles Rugby team for South Africa, Sir Donald Currie, owner of the Union Castle Line presented the squad with a golden trophy.

With the trophy came a very clear instruction to present the trophy to the team that gave the most spirited opposition during a tour match.

After a hard fought match Griqualand West became the first ever holders of the trophy that would, over the next century or so become the Holy Grail that South African provincial Rugby Teams would work tirelessly to possess.

I have just recieved the following, celebrating the 40-year aniversary of a memorable occasion:

On 18/09/2010 we are holding a commemoration of the match that took place on 18 Sept 1970, when Griquas beat the mighty Northern Transvaal 11-9 at Kimberley to win the Currie Cup.  We are expecting the likes of Mannetjies Roux, Piet Visagie and Piet Van Deventer to name but a few to come visit us here at Ammosal clubhouse.  This was the last time Griquas won the Currie Cup, and we have been bragging for years about the fact that nearly the whole team consisted of Ammosal players.

Blue Bulls (14) 39 / Griquas (27) 38 (Final Score)

The Vodacom Blue Bulls hosted the GWK Griquas at Loftus at 19:00 SA Time. This is the match thread for discussion of the game. The game was NOT BROADCAST live on TV in SA.

The Blue Bulls won by a single point, 39 / 38, after Naas Olivier missed the last conversion to win the game for Griquas.

Bulls got out of jail….

Jaco van der Westhuizen nearly cost the Blue Bulls another game this season…..

(Despite what SuperSport and Brenden Nel says that Griquas won, they are wrong… it is official, the Blue Bulls won. Brenden Nel was not even here at the game with us, simple as that! Read What SAPA says, what JJ Harmse says, what Vata Ngobeni of Pretoria News says…. and above all believe me!)

GWK Griquas hosted WP at GWK Park, Kimberley at 15:00. This is the match thread for discussion of the game. The Game was broadcast live on M-Net and SuperSport 1 in SA.

The 1st Half was a hard and uncompromising affair with Willem de Waal giving WP the edge with a few converted penalties, but the 2nd half was a different affair, WP running Griquas ragged and ending the game on fire.

WP scored 6 tries in the process…. they will be hard to beat next weekend at Newlands… beware Blue Bulls!
