Race has become another sore point for the South African Rugby Union (SARU) when transformation in rugby was discussed in Parliament on Tuesday, according to reports.

Some MPs complained about the “white faces” in SARU’s delegation that presented to the portfolio committee on sport and recreation.

EFF MP Pebane Moteka asked: “If you do not even your leadership can transform, how are you transforming the sport?”

Solly Malatsi from the DA then tweeted that Saru’s presentation reminded him of “the unbearable whiteness of the state of South African rugby “.

SARU president Oregan Hoskins, who led the delegation, asked MPs to confirm that he was not white.

“Honourable members, look at us and say we are all white men.

“As someone who grew up under apartheid, I know it is politically correct to refer to myself as black. Sometimes I just do not understand,” he said and shook his head.

He said if they were to play political games about who is black and who is not, it leaves them in a very different minefield.

“But I forgive people who think I’m white.”

SARU’s delegation was made up of 4 black and 4 white members.

“In SARU we try to do the right thing.

“I have to look at a white player and say we have to replace you with a black player because of transformation. It’s part of the job, but we will try to maintain a balance between competitiveness and transformation.”

Hoskins added that transformation would take time.

He said they did not want to put a black person on the team because of the colour of his skin.

“We want to develop black players in order to compete on the same level as white players.”

ANC MP and committee chair, Beauty Dlulane, said more needed to be done for transformation in rugby, especially in rural areas.

I ask for restraint in the comments about this matter, it can easily blow into something ugly and something we do not want.

    Please!

  • 2

All I can say is wow… what a sad, sad indictment on the state of our politics, that we are still even contemplating the colour of the skin in stead of what is right and wrong…

  • 3

    just to keep it relevant

    Ag Poepvlies,

    Stage 2 loadshedding 👿

  • 4

Let’s be honest one white face is too many for them.

The government says it values the contribution of non blacks in society but their every action says otherwise.

  • 5

To be honest I can’t even get that worked up about it any longer it’s just a fact of life in this country.

    > ANC MP and committee chair, Beauty Dlulane, said more needed to be done for transformation in rugby, especially in rural areas.

It’s hard to seriously (seriaas?) regard a comment about rugby from someone named “Beauty” who definitely ain’t no beauty and secondly are corrupt to boot

Probably referring to the gazillions of black players in the Eastern Cape, all uncapped Boks to the last man

So many in fact that Cheeky had to use imports to play for the Kings

    Ask Rhodes?

All Pobane Moteka is doing is championing for a cause he believes in.

    The same way Pocock does.

So if people can support Pocock for standing up for his views, then surely those in Parliament standing up for what they believe in must be afforded the same opportunity and support?

One can’t cheer the one and vilify the other.

So I don’t expect to see many negative comments against the statements made in the article regarding SARU, because I’m sure the bloggers here don’t subscribe to double standards.

So the DA also suffer from Whitephobia?

I should tweet him about “the unfathomable stupidity prevalent under black South African politicians”

    @ nortie:
So you opinion is to vilify both?

and so vilify any sort of activist every in the world? because you believe that if someone thinks that Suu Kyi, Ghandi or Mandela’s opinion carries the same weight as Stalin, Hitler or child molesters.

That you have to accept/deny one with the other?

  • 13

So we either have to accept that people standing up to for their rights and those that oppress rights have the same voice if they stand for what they believe in.

or deny both their rights(especially those that are oppressed) to stand up and just ignore them.

    Nortie’s 2nd Law.

  • 14

Lol championing a cause he believes in.

I bet that’s not what Nortier said when the promotions board passed him over for the 12 th time.

You managed to get that from my post?

Where I merely said that each are entitled to talk about their beliefs?

And somehow manage to bring in Mandela and Ghandi…..shoo, heavy stuff.

If a person wants chooses to stand up and agree with with Pocock and support his beliefs, and call those who don’t agree with him homophobic, then other people have the right to agree with what the fellow in Parliament said and call those who disagree racists.

Unless it’s a black player who happens to be gay? Then who knows, he might be welcome

Weet jy wat, dit gaan nie eers oor reg of verkeerd nie, of oor Superbru of nie…. dit gaan oor jou attitude wat suig!

Ango, wat ‘n baie moeilike man is om af te pis, ekself, MoosaBull, Herr Gunther… almal dink jou attitude suig, maar nee, jy alleen dink nie so nie.

    Dis miskien wakkerword tyd…

Use it, don’t use it…. whatever!

It’s quite clear that GBS, Angos, Macro and yourself in any case regard me as a doos, so why on earth should I take anything any of you say seriously?

The double standards Macro so laughingly refers to is exactly what he is guilty of if he is so anti quotas and more blacks, but so pro more gay players and their feelings.

So gay players may have feelings, but black players may not?

But seeing as it’s a doos wat suig making these comments, it will be brushed aside and laughed off and buried under many posts of how wrong I am etc.

Good of you to make the old “no promotion” jokes that at least elicited one laugh, but seeing who reacted makes it quite easy to understand.

Any SuperBru jokes? Or will that come tomorrow? 😆

  • 21

FUCK ALL grass roots development. Hence FUCK ALL transformation.

They go hand in glove with one another.

Mr SARU president, what initiatives have been taken to bring Rugby TO THE MAJORITY of previously disadvantaged potential Rugby players during your tenure?

It is a rhetorical question. We all know the truth does nothing to enhance the reality.

Gosn nortie, you know the problem. You always seem to make underhanded comments in other threads to derail a topic. I just dont get it.

And yes i indeed got that from your post you said.

“So if people can support Pocock for standing up for his views, then surely those in Parliament standing up for what they believe in must be afforded the same opportunity and support?

One can’t cheer the one and vilify the other.”

Surely you are saying we should respect anyone indeed everyone for expressing their opinions and that if we feel that its good for pocock to stand up for gays especially players in the closet… You compare it to ANYONE standing up for their beliefs, including racists.

    I mean really… Come on

    @ MacroBull:

Lol Nortie is just being a Devils avocado he doesn’t really believe all whites should be chased out of their jobs.

  • 29

    @ gunther:
Well according to norties 2nd law he is allowed to feel upset by these comments 😆

  • 30

    @ MacroBull:

Well he’s always upset about something whether it’s the Supersport producer or the Argentine rugby team who are we to judge ?

    😆
