Allister Coetzee

Stormers and Western Province coach Allister Coetzee is in high demand to coach in the Japanese league, according to reports.

Coetzee, who still has one year left on his contract with WP, is believed to be a strong candidate to replace Gary Gold as coach of the Kobe Kobelco Steelers in Japan. Gold is set to leave the Steelers to take up the role of Sharks Director of Rugby.

Meanwhile, WP’s Vodacom Cup and Under 21 coach, John Dobson, is also believed to be on the wish list of the EP Kings, while there is also interest in Dobson’s backline coach, Dawie Snyman.

Gert Smal, WP’s Director of Rugby, said they would like to keep all current coaches at the union for the next three years and are busy with negotiations.

“We’re looking at a structure in which we can stimulate the coaches to enhance their development. I’d like to have the negotiations sorted by the end of the month,” said Smal.

“We can’t control the fact that there is outside interest in them. (But) we’d like to create an environment where they feel they can develop. They must also want to be at WP. If it’s merely about money, then it’s another story.”

Coetzee, who coached WP to two Currie Cup titles in the last three years, will coach the Stormers in this year’s Super Rugby competition.

They start their campaign away to the Bulls in Pretoria on 14 February.

If anyone would attempt it it will be SARU.

SARU = All mouth and trousers. IE No b@lls

I know i am just saying I have only heard us expressing interests, NZ would pick up Japan in a heartbeat over europe.

The Europeans loves their product more because London to Paris is only 50km further than Bloem to Johannesburg.

I am not debating the merits on how it would be better for rugby to have a global season, but money talks louder than past reputations unfortunately.

    60 @ MacroBull:
You keep presenting obstacles… try to also present solutions!

If one keeps shooting it down, one will never see the positives or the possible outcomes… that ever-present Glass-Half-Full OR the Glass-Half-Empty situation.

Maybe I’m always positive because I’m a solutions man… that’s what I do for a living, I provide solutions… I am always forced to think outside the box!

Any workable solution would have to replace Super Rugby AND the ERC.

No sense trying to replace a domestic competition in a country, it will have to be a Global Club / Franchise tournament… and like I suggested there will have to be either some Tiers (Premier Division, First Division, Second Division) or some Conferences not based on Geo Location (because that would bring the skewed money situation right back into contention).

We could speak about this for months and still not agree on all fronts…

… but someone has to start thinking if SARU is too stupid to do so….

    @ grootblousmile:
There is no solution to forcing a square through a circle hole to be honest.

The French has all the money (whether is is sustainable or not) and the truth is that they vote such a small percentage of their season to international tournaments (ERC 9 games max) compared to domestic, this just shows me that they are not that interested. What is the solution? make them be interested?

1st step would be to try and align a global season FIRST and then take it from there.

I am generally glass half full, I just have my doubts, there are CLEARLY reasons we have not been included in the north yet after 18 years of professionalism, hell at a stage there was an attempt at a tournament between the North and the South and it just never took off.

  • 65

Even in Super Rugby, local derbies get exponentially more interest the international derbies, same will apply to any competition.

The Sracens matches and the Sharks / Toulon game is a pre-curser for more to come.

It takes a small spark to light a whole forest fire…

    Rugby Union needs dramatic evolution.

  • 68

    @ grootblousmile:
Gosh when did Noord Transvaal play in the European competition?

Maybe, but wasn’t there supposed to be a games Toulon vs Chiefs?

Logistics will always be a spanner in the works.

68… AN European competition. I think it was with the Celtic teams.

    Double Huh??

  • 73

The players union said they want a standardized season after the WC

It would be the ideal opportunity to explore a NH tournament

  • 74

SANZAR has already committed to the expanded Super 18 from 2016.
At the demise of the Heineken Cup there was a lot of speculation about SA going north (the Poite test at Eden Park played a huge part in many bloggers wanting to leave the SH, but that was more emotion than anything else)
The fact that the European countries formed the new competition without SA is all the indication we need that they don’t care to much about our participation or not.
A watered down warm up game once a year doesn’t mean anything, the only serious game that would spark interest and show willingness to expand would be if the SR champion side plays the European Cup champions will full strength sides.

MAn ek kan dit nie nou kry nie, ek is 100% seker Noord transvaal was in so toernooi in europa in the 90’s, dit was net een jaar gewees, maar links is skaars, ek kon dit so paar maande terug kry, maar nou nie. Gee net kans of help soek.

Tot n Chocochino by Menlyn se Wimpy is nog iets wat as a foreign taal beskou word

  • 83

    80 @ nortie:

Dis waar Loftus rof was soos Leon sing

“Was jy ooit al daar op Loftus

As dit vol is end it rof is”

Ek glo nie daar was ooit ‘n groter ondersteuner as hy nie

    Behalwe miskien I love Bakkies

  • 87

    84 @ Victoriabok:
    Brandewyn hettie brieke nie
