New Zealand Haka

New Zealand Haka

The Haka has been a contentious issue of late, and here, courtesy of Fox Sports, we bring you the top 5 responses to the challenge.

Personally, I feel that the IRB has erred in placing so many restrictions on the opposition sides regarding their response, all it means is that they must meekly stand X amount of yards away without being allowed to properly take up the challenge.

Come on IRB, grow a pair and allow the opposition to give as good as they get. It’s not as if it has an averse effect on the men in black, they still win most of the games.

I’m sure that the All Blacks would have no objection to their opposition giving a bit back.

Love it or hate it, it’s unthinkable to watch an All Black Test without the Haka, and personally, I’m a fan.

It’s a little tough for me to have an unbiased view on the Haka, being a Maori and Ab supporter. When I hear criticism of I try not to take it as an attack on my culture but it is bloody hard…but I agree that the IRB shouldn’t put any restrictions on how the opposition wish to approach it.

    @ Te Rangatira:
    Welcome TR
    Fantastic to see you here

    @ Te Rangatira:
And PS, your Blues buddy, Pops, has hit the jackpot.
He won tickets to the Sydney test, lucky bugger, he even sent me photos of him posing with the Bledisloe and Rugby Championship trophies.
Awesome prize, really happy for him

    @ nortierd:
He is a Tipene Oldboy so that is one good character trait . There is about 40 of us Oldboys going over to the Gold Coast, Surfers paradise to play a game there and party in October, would be good to see if Pops can make it up from Sydney…. if you could pass on my email addy to him ckdesigns@vodafone.co.nz would be much appreciated…and drop me a line too on that email if you wish.

    @ Te Rangatira:
Will do, really glad you made the switch.
Nice bunch of bloggers here, and very docile, nothing like what used to go on at Keo.

    @ nortierd:

Ranglet can get pretty feisty himself.

He once invited me over for a threesome and then long after wanted to Seperate my head from my shoulders.

Welcome Rangi I will do a mental haka in your honour.

Personally I love the Haka. When it starts I put the volume up and call my significant other to come watch which she never does. She loathes it for some reason.

As for the IR and their somewhat moronic (IMO) restrictions on how to accept the challenge, what a croc of shyte.

Then again, my loathing of many of the IRB decisions and their general attitude regarding the developmet of Rugby Union is well documented. So maybe I’m biased.

    @ Scrumdown:

    Far from banning the haka
I think everyone should be allowed to go a dance before a game.

Or a song or a stand up routine whatever shows off their artistic side.

I will phone Johnny Clegg to see if we can’t work out some sort of Zulu routine.

    Impi meets Ipitombi.

We will put Oregan in charge of costumes and Jurie in charge of fireworks it’s all they are good for.

Failing that maybe we can dress Ludeke up as a clown and fire him from a cannon.

I do the same, I actually don’t like it when the EP crowd sings Ole Ole, firstly it drowns out the sound and secondly, I get nervous when people sing Ole before the match is actually won πŸ˜€

    @ gunther:
Remember a few years ago when Claire Johnston from Mango Groove sang “my blood is green” or something like that before the Bok kickoff?

    That got me excited.

Or maybe fire AT HIM WITH A CANNON?

Hoskins will p1ss on the fireworks thereby rendering them unfit for purpose, and Roux will misappropriate the costumes. So I don’t think that will work.

When the National Anthem is done PROPERLY it gets me excited AND puts a tear in my eye.

    @ Te Rangatira:

I love the haka, it reminds me of home and whanau I have there.

TR not too worried if others find it funny, theatrical or whatever, they don’t have the connection with it the way we do.

as an aside, I loved the way Chabal used to respect the haka, you could see the switch flip in his mind whenever he faced it.. How could anyone not enjoy this?

    17 @ nga puhi:
Most do enjoy it as well, it’s more the IRB restrictions that have made it seem “unfair” to many, as no reaction is allowed.

Where I find it slightly less intimidating lately is the fact that it is almost “over commercialized” in a sense. It’s almost a made for TV pre cursor in many respects, and there is much more tongue lolling and face pulling than in the past.

Also, especially when the junior World Cup was on, some of those skinny white kids πŸ˜€ look everything but scary.

Just ask Sergio Garcia about this!

He’s nearly as good a snatching defeat from the jaws of victory as the Lions were a few seasons ago!

Shh. Don’t bring race / colour into the mix.

    GBS will ban you.

    Disapproval

    20 @ Scrumdown:
He he, Sergio, probably my least favorite golfer.
Too much waggle and too little trophies that count

  • 23

    21 @ Scrumdown:
Ha ha, remember Allan Houson (sp)
He used to slap his skinny legs so hard he only hurt himself and one could almost see the red welts form.
The bugger still won them the series thanks to that dodgy Welshman though

  • 24

    22 @ nortierd:
He’s got to break through eventually though.

Mind you I said that about Monty, and it took him turning to the Senior Tour before he won a “major”. Not sure it’s the same thing though.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Sergio. Probably because I always thought he may become something of a Seve reincarnation. Doesn’t seem likely though.

    Too tempremental.

  • 25

    23 @ nortierd:
The Haka has changed immensely since those heady days of the 70’s and 80’s.

As you say, somewhat commercialised nowadays, but still a moerse spectable IMHO.

  • 26

    @ Scrumdown:
Always better youngsters coming through, Sergio might as well play in Sharks jersey… πŸ™„

Clive Norling, the mofo! Doing the Haka with Alan Hewson 8 minutes into extra time… Disapproval

  • 28

    @ Pietman:
    That’s the one Pietman.
But Pops will be along shortly to extoll on the virtues of referees named Gert who used to officiate in South Africa
