    Well, they certainly showed more attacking intend specially during the first half which is very positive. The second half unfortunately was a comedy of errors and they were also heavily penalised by the ref.

    I think they will get stronger and better from now if they continue to play more positive and as injured players return. There is certainly a fair chance that they will remain unbeaten at Newlands for the rest of the season while they should win at least one out of the 3 remaining away games against SA opponents.

    To take this team really forward on the longer term they do however need a decent flyhalf, hooker and some more firepower amongst the back 3.

    I think the sooner they bring players like Robert du Preez and even the under 19 fullback EW Viljoen into the set up the better.

    Happy Easter everyone….

    Of the teams on 16 points the lions have the worst points differential. How are they on top of the others?

    It essentially means 3 saffa teams looking after the bottom of the ladder!!
    Must do an audit as to has the weakest conference!

    Yep, on our way to ending in the top 6
    Then it’s just a hop, skip and jump away from winning the title.
    Good times ahead

    Saw Flip vd Merwe has been cited.
    Not sure the Bulls can afford losing another forward.
    Anyone know why JPP didn’t play for the Sharks yesterday?
    Their backline is looking more and more shaky, many young and SR inexperienced players there, but fortunately their forwards are well balanced and doing one hell of a job.

  • 308

    @ nortierd:
    I didn’t bother to watch both games, a waste of precious time
    But talking backline, did you notice the Lions’ back line yesterday?
    Same team that once used to field th likes of Small, Hendricks, Hennie Le Rough, Molder and Gavin Johnson, it seemed not only the Rand has been devaluated 😉
    see for yourself:
    15. Chrysander Botha , 14. Courtnall Skosan, 13. Lionel Mapoe, 12. Stefan Watermeyer, 11. Anthony Volmink

    Devaluated!

    Caveman

    @Hondo
    Our backline players through all 5 teams look a bit thin.
    What Nama said the other night has a bit of truth in it, Francois Steyn is being hailed lately, but it’s because he is kicking monster penalties.
    It’s not as if the Sharks are scoring scintillating backline tries with him at 12 or even 10.
    The only SA side who, until yesterday, used their backline to run a bit, was the Cheetahs.
    HM can easily pick his Bok forwards from those playing SR, and then just include Flo, but he will have to look at overseas players to fill his backline.

    Hi Nortie. At least we’re not stone last anymore… for now. Things can change again after next weekend though.

    It was a real struggle for the no. 1 team on the log (Sharks) to bet the team that is now in the last place (Cheetahs). Sharks supporters will be rudely awakened once their team starts to play away from home, I think.

    At the end of the day both local derbies were jst so much poorer than the Aus and NZ derbies over the weekend, don’t you think.

  • 312

    Hi Nama
    Agree with you. I hope we don’t lose in Bloem again this weekend like we did last week, we need to string a couple of wins together.
    Our derbies usually are much more boring than the NZ ones, and this year, with the rise of the Force and even the Rebels in a manner, the Aussie derbies have also become more exciting than ours.
    I saw Steyn grimace at some stage during the match yesterday, I the Sharks lose him as well then they are in trouble.
    Thought Swiel did ok, some nice breaks and willingness to run, but he will have to work on his goal kicking on the big stage, similar to Pollard last year when he played CC. Mental strength required

  • 313

    @Nama
    The biggest irony is that the Sharks are just playing like we did in 2011-2010-2012
    The only difference now, according to the other rugby sites, and even HG on Rugby365, is that it’s great to play winning rugby.
    Remember how they used to make snide remarks about the Brokies who are boring and can’t score tries etc?
    If people now comment on the boring and dour game plan they are immediately chastised as jealous or sour grapes and told to look at the log and injuries etc.
    We also had our time at the top of the log and have had our share of injuries during those years and have won two conference cups and no SR titles, so we know it doesn’t mean much ending top.
    Just ironic how the wheel turns and our boring old game is now a winning master stroke of a game plan from Jake

  • 314

    @ nortierd:
    Yes, Swiel did very well. I got the feeling that he was a bit over eager to try and prove himself. I was surprised that Steyn didn’t do the kicking from the start since he had been kicking well the last few weeks. This would’ve given Swiel a chance to settle in wrt his general play.

    I hope so too Nortie. A win in Bloem next week will do wonders for our cause. Do you have any idea how many points the 6th placed team had last year?

  • 315

    @ nortierd:
    Ja, dis maar so As jou span wen dan maak dit nie saak HOE hy wen nie. 😀

  • 316

    @Nama
    Bonus points for the Stormers are like unicorns, it’s a myth.
    It’s true, a win is a win is a win, but I just find it amusing that winning through defense is ok now. Happy-Grin
    Fact is, and we learnt it the hard way, it’s quite alright during the regular season, but in the playoffs, especially against the NZ sides, it won’t be enough.
    Don’t worry about top 6 points, only the Sharks from SA will make the top 6, the rest of our franchises will get a rest during the play off phase

  • 317

    @ nortierd:
    @310
    Can’t see any overseas back good enough other than Ruan Pienaar who is a must imho
    It’s the SA forwards they are after overseas, say if Taute, JJ, Serfontein, JdV or Alende are our best home based backs, then the cupboard is empty
    Ebersohn, Meyer, WO and Barritt would have walked into MY team but they never got a recognition here and unlikely to get it now.
    You might be thinking of Kirchner or Bobo?
    😉

  • 318

    @ Nama:
    Evidently, SARU is looking after whom they highly valued 🙂
    btw: from some replays I watcged Newlands looked deserted yesterday?

  • 319

    @Hondo
    Lol, yes Kirchner is a must.
    Pienaar is the last player I was thinking of. He does nothing for the Boks.
    Habana, Morne, Jaques Fourie are the first ones that come to mind.
    With Fourie in the midfield it will already look better.
    None of the SA based centers can get the backline moving, or make space or take gaps and get offloads away.

  • 320

    @ nortierd:
    We’ll see Nortie…about that 6th position. If Stormers can get to 42 points, they may just have an outside chance. 😉

    @ Hondo:
    I see Aplon is going overseas. What you make of that? 😯

  • 321

    @Nama
    You must google a photo of a half full glass and use that as your Gravatar
    Wink

  • 322

    @ Hondo:
    Yeah, “just” 20 000 people bothered to pitch up at Newlands. 😉

    Not too shabby for a team at the bottom of the log before the game started.

  • 323

    @ Nama:
    aplon is nearing pension

  • 324

    good thing michael rhodes got sighted for that irresponsible tackle. it is strange the ref just let him off so easily.

  • 325

    @ nortierd:
    Hahaha… all we have left Nortie. Stay positive until the last possible moment.

    The fact is that the teams in positions 4-7 have between 19 – 22 log points…AT THE HALF WAY STAGE. Double that and see where it gets you. Also keep in mind that some of them still have to play against each other where one of them will drop points and you’ll see that it is quite possible. The only provision is of course that the Stormers collect around 30-32 points out of a possible 40.

  • 326

    anyway well done stormers. I thought that first half was probably the best the stormers have played since the highlanders game in 2012.

    Just that second half… It’s strange how we think our players pay to much Rugby when they only pay 40 mins a week.

    The lions rely HEAVILY on boshoff and his for is falling at the rate of knots, unless he can regain some form the lions won’t win another match this year.

  • 327

    @ Nama:
    that will include a whole bunch of bonus points though?

  • 328

    But the be fair to mournitz the lions line out lost to themselves. so he rarely got good ball.

  • 329

    At this stage any win is good but this one was great cause of the intent shown and that pleases me greatly.
    Also got this spot-on on Bru so pretty pleased my Lady

  • 330

    @Macrobull
    According to reports, he got an off field yellow?
    Does that mean suspension or play on?
