Coach Peter de Villiers on Thursday called up three replacements to the Springbok squad for the final two matches of the team’s end-of-year tour against England and the Barbarians – both matches at Twickenham.

Experienced wing Odwa Ndungane, hooker Bandise Maku and uncapped scrumhalf Charl McLeod will join the squad in London on Sunday. They are replacements for injured wings Bryan Habana and Bjorn Basson and hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, who has been suspended from all rugby activities (along with Basson) following a positive test for a banned stimulant.

Maku (24) and Ndungane (29) have both made one appearance for the Springboks this season – in June – while McLeod (27) is included in a Springbok squad for the first time.

“I called the players to let them know the good news and they’re all really excited to be joining us,” said de Villiers. “I considered calling them in this week but with all the other disruptions I thought it’d be better to focus as much as we could on what is a very important Test against Scotland.

“They can start with us fresh on Monday morning at the beginning of a new Test week.”

Ndungane won the last of his seven caps against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in June while Maku made his Test debut as a replacement against Italy at Witbank, also in June.

McLeod has forced his way into the reckoning after a successful Absa Currie Cup season with The Sharks.

“Charl would have been added to the squad earlier but he suffered an ankle injury in the final and would not have been able to travel as an immediate replacement for Ricky Januarie,” said De Villiers.

“But we’re delighted to be able to give him a chance to show us what he can do at the highest level.”

The three inclusions return the Springbok squad to its original compliment of 30.

Not too bad, don’t think they’ll get a look-in in playing terms though.

  • 2

What must the Griqua’s and Lions 9’s do to get into the squad? Charl McLeod???????

  • 3

Just a question: 2 wings and a hooker are sent home. Div calls up a hooker, a wing and a scrum 1/2. Are either of Ruaan or Hougaard injured and we don’t know about it?

    4@ Loosehead:
Remember, Meerkat Januarie also could not make the Tour, there was due to be 3 scrummies from the start.

  • 6

Wonder how Charl McLeod would like being called an Englishman, he is probably 8th generation 1820 settlers from Scottish descent….fully deserves his place he was the form scrummie in the Currie Cup.

  • 7

    @ bdb:
Drie of twee jaar gelede sou ek saam stem, maar Fourie het in sy pad gestaan….right place right time. ek hoop Jano kry sy kans….as die Leeus aangaan soos hulle ge eindig het dan sal hy…tensy beserings.

  • 11

  • 13

@4man stefan het die selle pad as monty geloop en as n beter speler terug gekom,hy speel bleddie goeie rugby en het goeie leiers eienskappe

    12@ 4man:
Outside center is a singulary difficult position in SA… the only team who has 2 good ones, is WP… Jaque Fourie & Juan de Jongh… both Bokke and both injured.

Sharks come closest with Oupa Stefan, but somehow he’s totally out of favour with the Bokke selectors… recon they consider him too old… kak reasoning if you ask me.

Bulls have Jaco Pretorius…. simply not adequate enough, not even really in terms of super Rugby for his Franchise.

Cheetahs have Robert Ebersohn, but to my mind he’s been disapointing when making the step up from Junior and Sevens levels to the full 15-man game…. bit small for a No 13, bit iffy on defence.

Lions might develop someone over the next year, but there’s nobody there at present who deserves a National call-up.

Looking further than that, one starts to scrape the barrel… except maybe for Walter Venter who played at the Leopards in a lost cause.

Fransie Steyn will have to fulfill the hospital job there for now, he’s at least a proper center.

I’ve said before, Lwazi Mvovo could one day be a very potent No 13, he has the attributes, but for now I’m glad he’s received the nod at Left Wing for Saturday.

In most positions we could rattle off the names who would not shame the Bokke jersey, but take 2 No 13’s out and we’re stumped, take 2 Tight Head props out and we’re stumped.

    @ 4man:
Hi, I did not ask you if you were planning to go to the England v SA game, or are you saving yourself for the Baa Baa’s?

  • 17

    15@ smallies72:
Jy sal nogal, want hy speel vir jou manne…. hehehe

  • 18

  • 19

    @ Blue Bird:
Hi BB…I’ve got tickets for the Baa baas game…always more festive….against the Boks there will be a stadium full of angst driven Englishmen…and its never quite the same. Best Boks games are Wales and Ireland to watch, Scotland too, the locals reckon if they win its a bonus, so there is no stress.

    dagse almal

bidibidi…. your logic about mcleod not having stood inline would say the same about hougaard as he too was fast tracked

  • 21

    Who’s watching Boobs & All?

  • 23

@ 4man:6- 4man, Agrey totally with you. Charl fully deserves a call up. He was outstanding in the CC.

Not sure if any of these players will get game time but sure is great for them to be over there. Really chuffed for Charl.

  • 25

    @ Puma:24 typo – Agrey = Agree

    @ sharky_forever:20 – Sharky, Exactly true.
