Super 14 drew an overall 1,832,867 bums on seats at an average of 20,141 per game, with South Africa leading at just under 26,000 per game (despite the low crowds at Coca-Cola Park.)

Country records and breakdowns:

1. South Africa: 856,930 (46% capacity) at 25,967 per game

2. Australia: 513,852 (28%) at 19,763 per game.

3. New Zealand: New Zealand total 462,085 (25%) at 14,440 per game.

As expected, the local derby games raised more interest than overseas teams. Not too much in the preferences for games against SANZAR partners, but then, that would depend on the local stadium size.

Team records:

Team most supported:
Stormers 296,674 at 42,382 per game.

Team least supported:
Highlanders 35,060 at 5,843 per game.

Most attended game:
50,000 for the Bulls v Sharks at Loftus.

Least attended game:
3,527 for the Lions v Blues at Ellis park (I’m also sure this counted the cleaning, vending and security staff).

Most watched away team:
Brumbies 171,475 at 28,579 per game.

Most unwatched away team:
Force 89,572 at 12,796 per game.

So here it, the Super 14 supporter log:

1. Stormers – 7 at home. Total: 296,674. Average: 42,382. Stadium: 83%
2. Bulls – 7 at home. Total: 240,035. Average: 34,290. Stadium: 66%

4. Waratahs – 6 at home. Total: 145, 227. Average: 24, 204. Stadium: 59%
5. Reds – 7 at home. Total: 159,707. Average: 22,815. Stadium 43%
6. Crusaders – 7 at home. Total: 150,068. Average: 21,438. Stadium: 59%
7. Blues – 6 at home. Total: 106, 400. Average: 17,733. Stadium: 29% *
8. Force – 6 at home. Total: 102, 121. Average: 17,020. Stadium 83%
9. Brumbies – 7 at home. Total: 106,797. Average: 15,256. Stadium 62%
10. Hurricanes – 6 at home. Total: 89,157. Average: 14,859. Stadium 43%
11. Cheetahs – 7 at home. Total: 101,384. Average: 14,483. Stadium: 32%
12. Chiefs – 7 at home. Total: 81,400. Average: 11,628. Stadium 42%
13 Lions – 6 at home. Total: 66835. Average: 11,139. Stadium 19%
14. Highlanders – 6 at home. Total: 35,060. Average: 5,843. Stadium 29%
* not aware of reduced capacity seating numbers.

Look at the capacity utilised and you can get an appreciation for the, at times, vast rows of empty seating in games which are actually reasonably attended.

For instance, the average crowd at the ME stadium in Perth would disappear at Eden Park.

Speaking of the Force, despite being one of the most unloved teams away, they attract a near capacity crowd on average.

Overall, though, it would seem crowds and interest are up from previous years. This is probably in large part to the return of an attack orientated game and the resurgence of the Reds on the back of it.

Pity that the Lions dragged down SA’s average by so much.
I’m sure the Lions average per game is only that high because of all the Sharks supporters in Gauteng that attended the Lions Sharks game.

  • 2

Lions at only 19% of capacity………. eishhhhhhhhhh

Lowest attendance… Lions vs Blues… only 3527 Spectators!. School matches in SA get more than that on a regular basis.

  • 3

There is a revival at the Cape !!!

Bulls supporters saved their money for the semis and finals… 😆

  • 4

Great achievement by SA though and showing that we are a proud rugby nation.

The Lions manager flies to Baghdad to watch a young Iraqi play rugby, is suitably impressed and arranges for him to come over to Gauteng.

Two weeks later the Lions are 18-6 down to the Bulls with only 20 minutes left to play. The manager gives the young Iraqi winger the nod and on he goes.

The lad is a sensation, scores 4 tries in 20 minutes and wins the game for the Lions. The fans are delighted, the players and coaches are delighted and the media love the new star.

When the player comes off the pitch he phones his mum to tell her about his first day in Super 14 Rugby.

“Hello mum, guess what?” he says “I played for 20 minutes today, and we were 18-6 down but I scored 4 tries and we won! Everybody loves me, the fans, the media, they all love me!”

“Wonderful,” says his mum, “Let me tell you about my day. Your father was shot in the leg and hijacked; your sister and I were ambushed, beaten and robbed; your brother has joined a gang of looters and all while you were having such a great time playing rugby”

The young lad is very upset. “What can I say mum, but I am so sorry.”

“Sorry?!!! Sorry?!!!’ shrieks his mum, “It’s your bloody fault we moved to Jo’Burg in the first place.”

    lmao
    good one!!

  • 8

Not surprised about the Stormers being the best attended as all true sports lovers reside in the Cape.

Would’ve expected more from the Bulls though – only 66%? But then again if you wear a helmet with horns on you probably take up the space of two seats….

  • 9

The Stormers attendance should actually be a lot more since most gents there sit on each others laps, thus taking up only one seat 😐

    huis.
    Ek was ….

    *
    Juffrou vra:*
Jannie was jy benoud omdat jy bang was jou pa hulle vang jou in die

    *
    Jannie antwoord:*
Nee juffrou, dis eers toe my pa my ma op die bed neergooi, haar klere
dat ek begin benoud voel het Juffrou

Okay so from a crowd or interest perspective SA contributed 46% to the SANZAR pie… with our closest rival at 28%…

Yet SA Rugby deemed it fit to share the revenue equally between the 3 countries…

  • 14

veey goof point morne…. We should have more say… Aus and nz always back each other against us….

  • 15

    veey goof point… 😆

Is that positive or negative 😀

  • 16

Durban Bulle – using a cellphone wif predictive text does that 🙂

    Populations :

    RSA – 49,052,489
    OZ – 21,262,641
    NZ – 4,213,418

So NZ, with less than 10% the population of RSA, averages more than half the RSA average attendance at Rugby games ! We are doing a GREAT job – thanks 😀

  • 18

17@ Rugby_Princess – 10% or less of our SA population has had proper exposure to rugby over the years…. legacy of previous political situation and natural sporting preferences over the years.

So, that realistically makes our Rugby Populations roughly equal….

Face it, NZ attendance figures are shocking!

If you do not agree with that simple clarification then rather take the Stadium Capacities as a measure because they would have been built to the expected size of the Rugby Following in the Area or Country….

Stormers come in at 83% of Capacity
    Bulls at 66% of Capacity
    Crusaders at 59% of Capacity
Sharks at 46% of Capacity after a very ordinary Season
    Hurricanes at 43% of Capacity
    Chiefs at 42% of Capacity

Therefore, Amongst the Top 3 SA Teams there is an Average Capacity fill of 65%
Therefore, amongst the Top 3 NZ Teams there is an Average Capacity fill of only 48%

These figures also shows how poor the NZ Crowds were compared to SA Crowds…

Now that’s comparing apples with apples…..

    gbs @ 18
i’m not so sure whether that 10% is correct
unless you dont count cullerts into your equation? 😉

  • 20

19@ Asbak – Even if it is 15%, then the Argument still stands….

  • 21

    gbs’ie my bru @ 20
still dont think its that low grootsadsmile
    just my feeling though
would be interesting to know how you got to that figures?

  • 22

If you take the total population including all illegal immigrants that percentage might come down to about 1% 😀

  • 23

22@ Blouste – We have more than double the Illegal immigrant population than NZ’s Total Population…. maybe even more than tripple…

For Instance, there are more Zimbabweans in SA at the present moment than there are Zimbabweans in Zimbabwe…..

Maybe the same can be said about Mozambicans…

  • 24

    blouste @ 22
always there to cover the back of a fellow bulls supporter nê? 😆

  • 25

Ash, as far as I know “back covering” is an art the Stormers are far superior in than the BULLS 😉

  • 26

    blouste @ 25

  • 28

    #27

Ek dog julle het daarmee opgehou tou “Liefling” weg is?

  • 29

    blouste @ 27
so jy dink julle gaan die naweek verloor? 😉

  • 30

    @ 28 😆

Jy verstaan nie mooi nie ne…
