Veteran Springbok and Bulls lock Bakkies Botha has been banned for four weeks.

That means he will miss both the Super 14 semifinal and possible Final. The Bulls play the Crusaders in the semifinal in Soweto on Saturday and the winner will face the winner of the other semifinal – between the Stormers and Waratahs in Cape Town. Botha will also miss the Boks’ first two Tests – against Wales in Cardiff on June 5 and France in Cape Town on June 12.

Botha attended a judicial hearing that lasted for four hours on Monday, at the offices of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union in Pretoria. However, the decision was deferred until Tuesday. The Judicial Officer, Peter Ingwersen, on Tuesday announced that the Bok lock has been banned for four weeks.

The player, who captained the Bulls in their Super 14 match against the Stormers at Newlands Stadium on Saturday, was represented by Gerrie Swart. Citing Commissioner Freek Burger cited Botha under Law 10.4 (h) for dangerously and recklessly entering a ruck without using his arms or grasping a player. Botha made contact with Stormers right wing Gio Aplon in the second minute of the match. Aplon required treatment on the field as a result. The Stormers won the match, 38-10.

NOT GOOD FOR BOKS I THINK , BUT COULD BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE FOR BULLS???

  • 2

I say this because Bakkies was and is not fully match fit , and has looked out of soughts since his return

And in Flip VD Merve they have a very good and able replacement

  • 3

again it was plain stupid from bakkies , there was nothing to gain from him barging in ,

  • 4

they must get him match ready for the boks , and work on his loose brain fart 😆

  • 5

ek hoop daai saders is vlokin moeg van die gevlied saterdag

  • 6

All we want is treat all similar incidents the same. Dont think for one moment Bakkies will go head butting without headgear. He cant be that stupid. But if this is the case he can just as well retire, nothing he does will now be accepted.

    hoekom nie nou nie??

  • 14

bulls lost 2 players with stupidity right here before the play offs and finals

    hurdles and now bakkies

    really stupid

  • 15

    luckily lock depth is good

wing might be a slight problem

  • 16

  • 17

i do however agree with super no problem he has been kicked out for 4 weeks but what of the others that do the same or worse??

  • 18

Goeie nuus vir die bulle is dat beide Jaco P en Mametsa reg is en ook oorweeg kan word. Sal die volgende agterlyn kies

    Zane

    Jaco P
    WO
    Mametsa/Dippenaar
    MS
    FDP

In all honesty can you see him ever being looked at fairly now. He is the scapegoat, just like Schalk Burger was earlier, somehow he got reprieve.

I’ve got to go with Sharkey here. In terms of the match situation last Saturday, really what was Bakkies thought processes when he tried to clean out a harmless little wing who really was not posing any threat in terms where the ball was in the early minutes of the game. Did he not know that given the Lions incident last year that he would be under scrutiny? Did he forget that his inexperienced team could ill-afford to lose him to a yellow (yes, I know he wasn’t carded by that one-eyed-pro-stormer Kaplan, but Bakkies was putting his team at risk, wasn’t he?). Four weeks is along time in rugby and I’m upset that Bakkies has let himself and his team down again.

Go look at the footage on the other thread…

    Blouste
I heard that Luds slipped the committee a stuffed envelope & a note that said “make sure it was at least 2 weeks !” 😯

You can’t make an argument for Botha in this regard, no contact except the head, his arm could even be construed as a flying arm. Both his feet was off the ground, that isn’t rucking my friend, it’s diving.

    Saint

Go and watch the footage and tell me the difference…

    JUSTICE 4 BAKKIES
    JUSTICE 4 BULLS

guys sorry but i wached footage and footage and footage

do i think he went in to hurt gio??? no

but he did and his head went straight in to the neck and side of gio’s head.

it was plain stupid and at the time the ruck was done and ball was about to come out

also it was not from behind but from the side , again stupid

i know you guys love your players as we sharks love our sharks players , but what he did was wrong and dangerous

i do however think 2 weeks should have been max and not the 4 weeks , but then again i am thinking with my bok heart 😆
