We picked up a gem of a comment from a fellow rugby supporter and blogger on one of the other rugby blogs around.

This what the fella had to say:

Things have been getting rather ugly between the Bulls and WP supporters on sport24’s blogs lately. The past two or three days have seen some particularly nasty insults being hurled. We’ve also seen a lot of macho chest-beating and penis-measuring. Had a few of these people not been separated by cyberspace then a few blows would surely have fallen by now. As juvenile and unbecoming as this behaviour might be, I have to admit; I’m loving it!

There is a simple reason for this though. Supporters of the Blue Bulls have been locked in nasty debates with Sharks and Cheetahs supporters for the past few years. This is purely a result of the intense competition between these sides who have dominated South African rugby over the past few seasons. Now Bulls supporters are aiming their wrath at WP supporters. I take it as a massive compliment. It can only mean that the Bulls see WP as a serious threat.

Now I’m not particularly pleased by some of the comments that have been made and blogs that have been written. As is plain to see on my blog background, I am a staunch Province supporter. I love the province and its traditions more than a grown man should love anything except his wife. However, my criticism is by no means reserved for Bulls supporters.

My biggest gripe with your average rugby supporter is arrogance. I can’t stand it. As much as I hate to admit it, our pale-skinned comrade Kitchener has illustrated arrogance as being very much a part of most South African rugby supporters’ make-up.

Both sets of fans have been guilty of arrogance. I will start by chastising my fellow Province supporters. I am a traditionalist WP man and I might be a little old-fashioned, but I believe that a true WP supporter is a man (or woman) who quietly endures the lean years and quietly appreciates the fat years. Win or lose a true Province fan should support the team and sit on the Railway-, Jan Pickard-, Danie Craven- or Grand Stand regardless of whether the South Easter is blowing in the Antarctic chill or whether Table Mountain has beaten a cloud into spilling its guts over Newlands. Although I can’t resist a good chuckle at jokes about Bulls fans being inbred and mentally deficient etc., I have enough respect for the old foe to refrain from getting involved in those kinds of insults. Especially on a public forum such as this. It is because of this that some of the obvious “Bull-baiting” that has occurred on these blogs have served to irritate the crap out of me. Counting your chickens before they hatch has a way of backfiring on you. (Remember the Super 12 of 1999) Show some respect and some restraint. Don’t get sucked into mudslinging.

Okay, so now that my own house is clean, allow me to spill some of the Cape’s finest red wine on a few other people’s Joshua Doore lounge suites. Two things have ticked me off. 1.) The continued obsession with Luke Watson. 2.) The way the return of the Springboks has seen the return of arrogance.

Now a number of WP supporters have been playing the role of a matador. They’ve be waving Luke Watson around like a red flag in front of the proverbial Bull. A cheap trick, I agree but the Bulls fans are really opening themselves up for attacks like this. Let me make this clear:

NOBODY LIKES LUKE WATSON!

He’s an arrogant shit-stirrer per excellence. Everybody knows this. There is no need to harp on about this my dear friends from the North. Even though we don’t like the sod we have to admit he is back on supreme form this year. His captaincy has also been exemplary. He must be doing something right if he has players of such different backgrounds as those of Frikkie Welsh, Tonderai, Chavhanga, Bolla Conradie and that useless Fijian slob Naqelevuki all happily playing under him. Trying to deny this just because you don’t like him, is bound to lead to some criticism! He deserves some respect, even if only for his playing ability. WP will miss him and even though I don’t like the man, I have to admit, the way things are going, it will give me some sick satisfaction to see Luke Watson lift Sir Donald’s golden cup just because I know it will piss off so many people.

Lastly I do find it amusing how the only peeps we heard from Sharks and Bulls fans for most of the season has been about “playing with our second teams”. Now with the Boks back, these same supporters are writing off all opposition. Suddenly their teams can’t be beaten. The Lions probably shut the Sharks supporters up last weekend. I am not going to risk tempting fate by telling the Bulls supporters that their confidence is soon to be shattered too but I am going to say that perhaps a little caution would be wise. Even if your team is now overflowing with Springboks they can still lose to a well oiled team like the Cheetahs and WP.

I guess what I’m trying to get at is that the Currie Cup isn’t even close to being won yet. A lot still has to happen. I have criticised fans on both sides of the frontline but please take it in good spirit. The passion you all have for your teams is commendable. I just had to throw in my two cents worth.

If you ask me, all this rubbish-talking going on is a great indication of the interest in the competition. Long may it continue!

Though we may not all all agree with his sentiments towards liking or disliking certain players, I think he has this issue very well summed up !

Gooi Mieliesssss, rugby supporter…. and come blog here too… you’re welcome.
