15. Joe Pietersen
14. Tonderai Chavhanga
13. Juan De Jongh
12. Morgan Newman
11. Gio Aplon
10. Peter Grant
9. Dewaldt Duvenage
8. Luke Watson (C)
7. Duane Vermeulen
6. Francois Louw
5. Anton Van Zyl
4. Chris Jack
3. Brok Harris
2. Deon Fourie
1. Wicus Blaauw

Reserves:

16. Hanyani Shimange
17. JD Moller
18. De Kock Steenkamp
19. Pieter Louw
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Frikkie Welsh

@Polla – Polla , I understand but surely players must be open for constructive critism ? Imagine we adopt an attitude of its ok , you did not pick yourself so we dont blame you.

As long as the crit is constructive and above the belt I see no problem is giving an opinion about a player.

Back to Morgan , personally I have watched him for a few months now and cannot see the fuss as to why he is regarded by many as the replacement for JDV at WP and Boks , why was he invited to the Boks squad for instance and played against the Lions ? This tells me that surely he has some talent and promise , my problem is I am yet to see it , thats all.

His center partner on the first outing against the sharks showed me more promise than Newman the whole year so far , I might be wrong about Newman and he might shine for WP in the future but so he has not and its not only his playing or tackling etc etc , his passing is poor and he drops the ball a bit more than the others , the one positive thing I will say about him is that his defensive positional play is good so far , he seems to have the ability to be in the right place defensively.

@sparty – Now the question is why is he afforded so many chances to prove himself and how did he get into a position for the coaches to see his promise ? And the answer I can find so far is that he is from Bishops.

  • 64

@sparty – Ask yourself the question would he have been where he is if he played for a less fancied rugby school ?

  • 65

64@sparty – You busy having one hellova discussion with yourself Sparrie ??

  • 66

@sparty – He did play for Maties as well and played in the first varsity cup matches. He is a WP Cravenweek schoolboy player and has come up through the ranks. I dont think he is that bad…I have seen him play as youngster and he had much better skills then…maybe he’s a bit rusty after injury or something. I dont know, but I would not throw the Bishops tag at him.

@Pietman – it was the place to be the old stadium

    @GBS – Jaa nee swaar !! LOL

@ Polla , ok I guess he must have done something correct in getting where he is , I just cannot see it , he is like the new Gus Theron.

@sparty – There are plenty of very good young centres at the Institue and at Maties that might be coming through in the next year or so. Johan Sadie, Chad Moolman, Danie Poolman, Danre Gerber (I think its Danie Gerber’s son, I’m not sure),Jean Stemmet, PJ Vermeulen, Stokkies Hanekom…just to name a few. They were all brilliant schoolboy players and will carry the WP centre legacy on in the next years!

    @Polla
Could be his son. Honestly why doesn’t Paarl and Maties fall under Boland?

  • 73

@Polla – Dis waar. Ek was al meer gespanne langs die veld as my seun speel, as by ‘n toets teen die AB’s en hy het nie eens vir ‘n top skool gespeel nie!

  • 74

@vanStraaten – That is a question which will go around and around and will never be answered!..It’s only rugby that still falls under the WP in Stellenbosch and Paarl. All other sports (School and club level) falls under Boland. Somewhere way back some administrators made some deal…we will never know the full story.

Have to leave for a while….chat again later

    @Polla
Tackler (of all people!) told the story some years ago, of how Paarl and Stellenbosch became WP.
Somerset West is WP, but Grabouw is Boland, for example.

    74@Polla – There’s a similar situation in Gauteng.

In all sports except Rugby, Ekhuruleni clubs and schools fall under the equivalent of the Valke.

In Rugby, Alberton and Germiston Simmer fall under the Lions, but Elsburg and the other Ekhuruleni clubs fall under the Valke.

The schools is even more confusing, Alberton’s “white” and “coloured” schools fall under the Lions, buth the “black” schools fall under the Valke.

From a long term Rugby development perspective it is IMO a disaster.

There are so many potential Rugby players in Thokoza / Khatlehong (Alberton), that are receiving no development or attention because of this situation.

I don’t know what the answer is, but the current situation (which has been ongoing for a good few years) is very unhealthy for the sport.
