Todd Blackadder

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has taken a swipe at the SANZAR brains trust over their proposed Super Rugby innovations.

He called the proposed changes to the Super Rugby bonus point system “bizarre” and suggested there was a lack of consultation with franchises on the matter.

The SANZAR initiative, that is expected to formally unveiled early next week, also include a number of minor law variations for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

While some of the expected law innovations still require World Rugby approval, the biggest innovation – a change to the try-scoring bonus points – is what has caused the biggest stir.

The SANZAR change will see the bonus point awarded to teams who score 4 tries or more in a game scrapped and replaced by 1 for teams that score 3 tries more than their opponents.

Blackadder called the proposed change “bizarre” and queried the lack of consultation with franchises on the matter.

The mooted change, widely reported by media in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, is a copy of the system used in the French Top 14 league and aimed at keeping lopsided games alive for longer periods.

Blackadder, though, was hardly enthused by the move.

“It is a little bit bizarre,” he was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz website on Friday.

“It just means we have to score 3 tries more than anyone else. It will be really interesting when it comes to decisions.”

Blackadder, a former All Black captain who has coached the 7-times Super Rugby champion Crusaders since 2009, said he had not been consulted on the changes ahead of the new season which starts on 26 February.

“Honestly, no. We just got flicked an email,” the 44-year-old said.

“There hasn’t really been a lot of consulting, to be honest, which is disappointing. But it is what it is. Like anything we will ask our players to adapt and get on with it.”

Congratulations Stephen Cook on getting the hundred on debut, out for 115. SA were really dominant until tea with 3 wickets for England balancing things out a bit more now. SA 273/4 with about 14 overs left for today, should end the day in a reasonable rather than dominant position now.

It is flippen disappointing that england won this series dropping 20+ catches… They have at times made us foolishly think we are competing.

    @ MacroPolo:
So much for the old adadge catches win matches. England have been so dominant even without Anderson being near his best think only 4 wickets in series so far but saw online there have been 4 catches dropped off his bowling so he could be at 8 wickets but even that would be below his high standards. On the other hand we have been without our top 2 bowlers.

SA 423/8 not long back after lunch de Kock on 86 hope he stays in and doesn’t run out of partners before at least a century.

  • 5

Lucky escape for de Kock dropped on 90

  • 6

Well done Qunton de Kock on getting the century. SA 444/8. Also good on Piedt for staying out there with him

  • 7

Rest in peace Jack Bannister. Didn’t see him in his playing days but used enjoy him as a pundit used to sound like such a gentleman and so knowledgeable.

  • 8

Zane Kirchner has scored Leinsters first try dotting down in right hand corner Wasps 0/5 Leinster.

  • 9

Nice carry by Juan Smith comes to nothing as Toulon eventually give away penalty close to Bath line

  • 10

Just over half an hour gone:
    Bath 6/11 Toulon

  • 11

28 min gone: Wasps 12/5 Leinster

  • 12

Yellow card against Wasps tighthead cynical play close to Wasps try line kicking the ball away near a ruck from an offside position. Another ref may have given Leinster a penalty try

  • 13

Reddan dots down after great offload from Dave Kearney who was in the air when he passed as he was being tackled out TMO gives the try

  • 14

Wasps 12/10 Leinster as the conversion was missed

  • 15

Bath 11/11 Toulon as Bath are awarded a try was nicely worked if you ignore the forward pass in the build up as TMO did when he let ref award it

  • 16

Bath the dominant team now and they get a kickable penalty

  • 17

51st min Bath 14/11 Toulon. Toulon need to get back in this or their campaign could be over

  • 18

46th min in the other game in samr pool Wasps 23/10 Leinster

  • 19

As it stands Wasps on top of pool 5 and Toulon on 17 points would depend on other results to get to knock out stages. Just under half an hour left

  • 20

Toulon top pool 5 now Bath 14/16 Toulon

  • 21

Bonus point try for Wasps a penalty try. As it stands both teams have 20 points but Wasps in first place. Think 20 points may be enough for Toulon to go through to knock outs

  • 22

Saracens Leicester and Racing have already qualified for the knock out stages

  • 23

Bath strong on attack and get a penalty less than 8 min left

  • 24

Bath 14/16 Toulon as Ford misses it 74th min

  • 25

Final scores : Wasps 51/10 Leinster Bath 14/19 Toulon. Wasps got bonus point so end pool stage on top of pool 5 and qualify. Toulon 2nd on 20 points as well so neef to see how other results go to see if they are one of the 3 2nd placed teans to go through. Should just squeeze through

Consolation win in the Champions Cup for Glasgow Warriors over Racing 92, 22/5. 1 try by each team in rainy conditions. Racing who had already qualified for the knock out stages before the game rested quite a few of their top players eg. Dan Carter and Johan Goosen. Glasgow also had a lot of players out – through injury. Some multiple in a few positions eg 4 hookers, 3 centres; st least 2 or 3 loose forwards plus Ryan Wilson was given the night off following his farcical citing and appearance before the disciplinary hearing in London in which he was completely cleared. Also 2 scrumhalves injured…

not a fan of this reform
    top14 rules
tend to produce a more restrictive rugby

defensive sides do not expose themselves

we see the difference with European cup
where teams like ospreys whatever dominated try to play and get a bonus point

but may be as nobody risk much in your competition
you can be an ugly team and still be there the year after
    il will not change much

    BTW happy new year folks

here we try to heal the wounds of this World cup…

    Hi,

Back after a marvelous holiday on the Cape West Coast.

We started our holiday with a flight to Cape Town International Airport and made our way in our rental car slowly, first via The Strand & Gordons Bay, through Stellenbosch to Franschoek.

Of course every stop somewhere included some wine tasting (without spitting a drop) and buying some wine.

Stayed in the little town of Franschoek, went and ate that evening at Roca restaurant on the Dieu Donné wine estate.

Next morning we did a host of wine tasting, starting at Haute Gabriere, then over to doddle in Franschoek town and eating at their Pancake Restaurant… then on to Maison and Grande Provence.

Off we went to the Stellenbosch area, where we visited Bergkelder, JC Le Roux and slept over at a marvelous B & B outside Stellenbosch.

Next day we went to a place outside Stellenbosch…. can’t remember the name… something Cafe…

Then we went to the Paarl area and to Fairview Estate where we did the cheese and wine thing combined.

Next we went to the West Coast, where we stayed in the Jakkalsfontein Private Nature Reserve, just south of Yzerfontein. We stayed there for the remainder of our trip. Jakkalsfontein is so unspoilt, only our own footsteps on the beach for miles and miles… we had wonderful weather, and from our stoop looked West over the water to where Dassen Island is situated.

Here we rested properly and on the 2nd last day of the holiday we went on a full day trip to Yzerfontein, Langebaan, past Mikonos, then to Velddrif and Laaiplek, then on to St Helena Bay, Stompneuspunt, Paternoster, Jacobsbaai and back to Jakkalsfontein.

On the last day, we went down to Cape Town, and took the Peroni Yaght from the Waterfront out to sea, all the way close to Robin Island and back. Then we went up Table Mountain in the Cable Car, spent some time there and then back and rushed to the airport for the flight home to OR Tambo International Airport.

The bones are now refreshed, millions of plans in the head for 2016… and ready for all sorts of action!

I needed the holiday, I was quite used up in 2015… and needed a whole new mind reset and rejuvenation… a break from everything in and around me… away from everything that I did from day to day!!

It is great to see that my great friend, BullScot did a marvelous job here on Rugby-Talk in my absense. My friend, you are what true friends are made of!

    **********************

OK, back to the news…. I do not like this new Bonus point system for tries, not 1 itty bitty!
