Eddie Jones

UK bookmakers have stopped taking bets on newly appointed DHL Stormers coach Eddie Jones replacing fired Stuart Lancaster as supremo of the England rugby team. They are so convinced Jones will leave Newlands for Twickenham that betting on him doing so has been suspended.

But the Australian who guided Japan to rugby’s great giant killing act over the Springboks won’t come cheap. In the Times of London this morning, SA billionaire Johann Rupert says extracting Jones from his contract with the DHL Stormers will cost the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) R 15 Million (£ 700 000.00).

Richemont chairman Rupert, co-owner of the DHL Stormers through the 25% owned by 1 of his businesses, told the newspaper: “We have no influence” and confirmed the Cape-based franchise would not engage in a bidding war over the recently hired head coach.

In September, Eddie Jones signed a R 5 Million a year deal with the DHL Stormers which runs until the end of 2018. That made him the highest paid coach in South African rugby, ahead of Heyneke Meyer who guided the Springboks to 3rd in the recent Rugby World Cup.

The Times also quotes Stormers director of rugby Gert Smal, who says as yet there has been no official offer from England to Jones.

“I don’t know if they approached him,” the newspaper reports.

“When I get something in my hands and I know a little more, I’ll do the right thing.”

England’s apparent determination to hire Jones pushes his boss during Springboks’ 2007 Rugby World Cup victory, Jake White, into 2nd choice. Jones had previously said he was happy to have woken up with a view of Table Mountain and was committed to the Stormers.

Jake White (52), coaches French club Montpelier and told Sky Sports: “It’s one of the sought-after jobs in world rugby. A sleeping giant as England are, they’ve got all the resources, the history, the tradition. If the RFU were genuine about picking a foreign coach and considered me the right man for the job, it would be naïve of me to tell you I wasn’t interested.”

Eddie Jones already ditched 1 Super Rugby side to come to the Stormers. He was supposed to coach the Japanese Super Rugby side, the Sunwolves, remember!

So, what would stop him ditching the Stormers too… surely 4 times the salary in it for him at England.

  • 2

Oh well, lets see what happens.

The English Press is well known for their gossiping about player and coach movements and is often wrong.

Having said that, every man has his price and London is not a bad place especially if you have money to spend.

If he goes and the Stormers make R15m out of the deal it might not be so bad…. they will then at least have money to buy a decent flyhalf… maybe even Lambie.

There is something about Eddie that doesn’t sit well with me…I think it is his big mouth and what comes out of it.

  • 4

    @ Te Rangatira:
Yep and he has been talking a lot since arriving in Cape Town.

For the stormers. Making a profit now is a best case scenario as im also on the side that he won’t have much success in ct.

With R15 they can buy Johan Ackerman from the Lions.

Everybody has expected that he will coach the Sunwolves, but there was never a signed contract.

    @ dWeePer:
    Hands off my coach!!!!

  • 7

    @ MacroPolo:
Yep, sell him off whilst he is a marketable commodity and there is a sucker in England that will pay top dollar for him.

  • 8

Hmmm Eddie got sold for a “mere” R2.1 to England.

  • 9

    R2.1million

Hi Maco what is this 2.1 million and link between Jones and England about?

Has there been further new developments. This is what was online yesterday:
“Eddie Jones has moved closer to becoming England’s first foreign head coach after talks with Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian Ritchie.

The Australian, 55, is understood to be keen on the role, but needs to secure his release from his job as coach of South African franchise the Stormers.

A senior Stormers source told the BBC this week that Jones had signed a “long-term contract” in Cape Town.

South African Jake White has also been under consideration by the RFU.

However, it is believed White – a World Cup winner with the Springboks in 2007 – is not at the top of the organisation’s wish-list to succeed Stuart Lancaster, who left the job after England’s failed 2015 World Cup campaign.”

    @ MacroPolo:
Just seen this was on another link today:
“The RFU is apparently willing to fork out the £700 000 (ZAR15-million) asking price to get Jones to move north – likely to use the £15-million profit from hosting the World Cup to secure a swift pay-out.”

  • 12

Won’t be good for the Stormers but will be a bit of relief this side if Jones is appointed as the bookies had previously ‘slashed their odds’ on Vern Cotter getting the England job, hopefully that was just them using the situation to try and get punters money in rather than an indication of Cotter really going there now.

BTW, I’m not sure that this report is correct – perhaps you should wait for confirmation …

    Allegedly

    @ Angostura:
Im sure its a forgone conclusion that eddie is off… The 2.1 million is the shocker if thats true.

  • 16

    13 @ Angostura:
Hi Angostura thanks, yip guess it’s better to wait and see, my only concern really was on seeing Vern Cotter linked to the job (albeit in the manner of the bookies odds on him and various others). It’s taking time but it seems rugby is eventually catching up with football in some matters, loads of speculation about ‘transfer fees’ on this one is just what happens all the time in football over here. I have often wondered why the rugby journalists never mention the amounts of cash for player’s transfers and their salaries nearly as much as their football counterparts. I have wondered if this is because there are different ‘ethics’ at work or simply whether the rugby guys are not as well connected as the football ones. Although to be fair the amount of speculation that goes on around football can be over the top and often merely that – speculation. If they speculate often enough about a certain player leaving a club they will eventually be right when he leaves, can’t remember how many seasons in a row (could have been a handful) Thierry Henry “was leaving” Arsenal before he eventually left …

  • 17

If he wants to take the Eng job, who can blame him?
Let him go if that’s what he wants.

  • 18

There is apparently a buy-out clause in his contract. That is where R2.1/2.2M comes from.

The R15M was on the WP wishlist.

See it this way: WP against the RFU, the Rand against the pound. Mickey mouse will lose.

  • 19

    @ dWeePer:
I cant see any coach going into a 5 year deal without a proper exit clause in place. International duty will no doubt be in any of them.

  • 20

Oh well..2015 is a good year for Eddie. Nobody can really blame him for dropping the Stormers like a sack of potatoes for the pot of gold on the banks of the Thames.

John Mitchell seems to be in the Gert’s radar now…. perhaps he will make him a better offer this time.

John Mitchell would be a better fit for the Stormers anyway

The New Zealand style of play will suit them better

WP/Stormers will say goodbye to their best ever coach.

He never lost a single match.

    I came, I saw, I co… left … again – Eddie Indiana Jones

    Bye

  • 25

It is understood that Jones flew to London on Wednesday night, and sent a message to the Stormers management before his departure apologising for the fact that he was leaving them before his job had really begun.

Hier is die woorde wat Eddie oorgedra aan al sy Stormers maats,

    Hi Bullscot,

Do you know that they keep record of the number of and the accuracy of daily football transfer rumours published in the British Press?

The Guardian does the best with an accuracy of 36% while The Sun and Daily Mirror do worst with 21%.

Btw.. the latest rumour is that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is apparently available for your club if they want him …. A bargain at £42m they say Happy-Grin

  • 27

If Eddie Jones has indeed left the Stormers.. and the indications are that he has indeed… then he has made a complete mockery of the Stormers!

Now I hear John Mitchell is touted for the job… and a lot of Stormers supporters now see him as the new saviour… well, good luck to the Stormers, there’s another bubble waiting to burst after a year or so! Just look at each of the sides Mitchell has coached, for a clue as to why he left under a cloud… discord, upon discord, upon discord… and so on and so on!

Stormers would be much better served if Gert Smal simply stepped in and assumed the head coach role!

Now you also know why I do not want a foreign coach for the Bokke… because the Rand can’t buy enough “Loyalty”… and that’s just the start of it!

But nooooooo, people want a foreign coach…. yeah right!

  • 28

    @ robzim:
Hi Robzim know that, about the transfer rumour accuracy and the player you say linked to Arsenal but no way on £42million that is crazy money Amazed Is the accuracy a test of who ends up where or the actual amounts of transfer fees and salaries?

  • 29

    @ Bullscot:

I think it is only a test of who ends where and not the actual money. The accuracy will probably be much lower for that.

  • 30

    @ grootblousmile:

Gert Smal certainly don’t agree with you re Mitchell as he has approached him to coach the Stormers even before he approached Eddie but Mitchell declined at the time.

If Gert is not prepared to step down and coach the team himself here is not really any other local coach available as Dobson is probably too inexperienced.

That is unless you want them to appoint Peter de Villiers 🙂
