Peter de Villiers

Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers was a guest speaker at an event where a group of supporters burned a Springbok jersey out of protest last week.

A new organisation, Supporters Against Racist Rugby Associations (Sarra), was officially launched in Mossel Bay last Friday, where the group burned a Springbok rugby jersey.

The group wants to see more players of colour in the Springbok team and feels not enough is being done to speed up the transformation process in South African rugby.

De Villiers, 58, attended the event as guest speaker.

De Villiers, who coached the Springboks between 2008 and 2011, has made headlines over the past few weeks for his scathing criticism of current national coach Heyneke Meyer.

He feels Meyer is not giving enough black players the opportunity to prove their worth and wrote in a column that the current Bok coach “underestimated the intelligence of black people with a dishonest selection”.

He has also said that Meyer has taken South African rugby “into the gutters”.

De Villiers will work as a rugby pundit for the SABC during this year’s Rugby World Cup.

The 2015 Rugby World Cup, to be staged in England and Wales, runs from 18 September until 31 October.

Yeah, true… I have no problem with that stance.

But let’s then move back to Snor’s own tenure, he should then be equally to blame, because his selections were also iffy and not sufficient… yet he now deems it right to shout about it!

Meyer’s Squad will now have 1 more (if the ghost squad is to be believed) player of colour in it… so Peter was not a radical change monger in his time either.

P-Divvie had his favourites also and if me or you had to be coach, we’d most probably be accused of player bias too!

I would be totally and seriously OK with it if the whole Springbok side was black, if they were the best players in their positions in SA. Absolutely no problem, whatsoever!

Serious question, would YOU be OK with it if the whole Springbok squad was white because they were the best players in their positions or do you want racial engineering to continue?

    Mooi loop Pedjie, laters….

    @ Pietman:
Ek dink ook Meisiekind was baie gekies omdat hy gereeld beter as sy direkte landsgenote was, jaar in en jaar uit, maar kon dit nie by die springbokke doen nie. @ Pietman:

Wink

Hy was my MoM in die eerste wedstryd (teen Aus), maar daarna was sy diens nie meer so vinnig nie, volgens my.

    @ Nama:

  • 129

    @ MacroPolo:
Amper soos JdJ wat vir omtrent drie jaar, jaar vir jaar, beter as sy landgenote was, of hoe? Wink

    127 @ Nama:
    YES which way?

Yes you want racial engineering to continue?

    or

Yes you would be OK with a totally white Springbok team if they were the best players in their positions?

  • 131

    @ Nama:
Een jaar 😉 2014 WAS hy uitstekend gewees.

  • 132

“Meyer’s Squad will now have 1 more (if the ghost squad is to be believed) player of colour in it…”

Keep in mind that the RWC squad has been increased from 30 to 31.

Also, more players playing SR now and not all of them wings.

    Wink

G’nite all, I’m off to dream about my “lily-white” Brumbies team…

    Pleasure

  • 135

    @ grootblousmile:
I would be OK with a white Bok team provided they are the best players.

Actually a stupid exercise this but I’ll indulge you.

    @ MacroPolo:
    Naah, maak dit 2013 & 2014.

2012 was hy nie sleg nie.

Hoeveel toetse het hy toe in 2014 gespeel nadat hy so uitstekend was? Wink

  • 137

    More gaan interressant wees!!!

  • 139

    135 @ Nama:
Yeah a stupid excercise… but it leads to something…

Can’t get the lawyer out of my blood, it’s ingrained…. it always leads to the next step or question.

    Here’s the next part…

If I am OK with an all BLACK Springbok team and you’re all OK with a WHITE team… provided they are the best in their positions… then we actually have exactly the same stance (bias towards certain specific players excluded).

I suppose many rugby supporters would unite in our stance and share the sentiments… because they are pure sentiments!

Now it leads to the biggie…

Do we then even need to count the number of players of colour in a team anymore??

  • 140

  • 141

    @ grootblousmile:
No, there should be no need to count players according to colour, it just doesn’t make sense, as you so aptly put it! But we are talking South Africa 2015….remember Pondering
Think about the USA, and its demographics, how many white players are there in the respective basketball teams across that land? And then take a look at baseball, how many black players are there? Quite the opposite from basketball, I can tell you! WHY????

(* I ask these questions on the assumption that you have exact criteria to distinguish between white, black, Native American, Latino, Eskimo, and whatever, like we have in South Africa, or don’t we? I have always had this problem, namely how to distinguish between racial lines in my country, so please bear with me. And the new laws relating to BEE don’t really assist me in this regard, e.g. people of Chinese origin being regarded as black etc…maybe you as a prokurower can explain and interpret them for me?)
And while you are at it, could you please also tell me, why this obsession with the colour RUGBY players? Every time we are approaching the rugby world cup tournament, we have this problem of counting black players, except in 2011.
Look at 2007, and Butane Komhela’s threats to withhold the players’ passports, for instance, just to mention one of many unpleasant disruptions in the build-up to France 2007.

Why didn’t we have this furore in 2011? Only in 2007 with Jake and then again now with Heyneke?
What was different in 2011 that made everyone so contented with the squad selection then?

  • 142

    @ Pietman:
“….skin colour of RUGBY players….”, sorry.

  • 143

    @ grootblousmile:
Anyway, I have to go, will be back later this afternoon to check your reply.

  • 144

I believe the Springbok squad announcement for the World Cup is at 18:00 tonight?

If that is so, then I am SERIOUSLY IMPRESSED by the commitment, meticulous planning & dedication shown by Heyneke Meyer in his bid to leave no stone unturned in his quest to bring World Cup glory to his country.

That he is prepared to go the extra mile goes without saying.

After all this is the first time that I can recall that a SARU employee will still be hard at work after 12:00 on a Friday afternoon…

    Congratulations

  • 145

    @ BrumbiesBoy:
Jaco van Heerden, Jaco Pretorius, Jacques Nieuwenhuis and Christie du Preez are all on the clock for the night shift tonight 😆

  • 146

HM busy finalizing his announcement speech, fine tuning his cliches something along the lines of “this is an awesome squad full of character” “Rudi Paige and Siya have always been part of my plan” “JPP once made an awesome tackle somewhere back in 2007 that showed lots of character, so he has always been in my plans” “Cobus, Marcell and Heinrich have always known where they stand with me, they will be awesome in the CC” “Ever since I saw Jesse playing U/6 I knew he was going to be in my future plans” etc etc

  • 147

    @ nortie:
Overjoy Approve Yeah, it’s gonna be much the same as that “dinner for two” story or whatever its called…”the same procedure as every year, Fikile…”
