Former Lions head coach and Springbok assistant coach Dick Muir is suing the Golden Lions Rugby Union over alleged breach of contract.

According to reports, Muir is claiming R 4.6 Million from the union, after his 3-year contract was allegedly ended after only 1 year in 2010.

In court documents submitted to the labour court in Johannesburg, the GLRU denies the claim and said Muir was paid R 900 000.00 too much during his time with the union.

Muir, who helped the Springboks prepare for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, was at times absent for as long as a month.

The GLRU claims “wrongful payments” for all those months Muir was absent.

Muir said his agreement with the GLRU was a full-time position with a monthly salary of R 200 000.00, which equals R 2.4 Million per year.

He was initially appointed as head coach and director of rugby for the period between November 2009 and October 2012, but the last time he received payment was for October 2010.

He now claims R 2.4 Million and R 2.2 Million respectively for the last 2 years he was not paid.

Muir said his contract with the GLRU was never terminated via a written statement.

The GLRU says Muir needed written permission from SA Rugby to join them, which he never had.

Therefore, the GLRU claims SA Rugby was supposed to repay them for the months Muir was at the Boks.

Muir denies that there was ever an agreement that SA Rugby should compensate the GLRU while he was away at the Springboks.

    Blah, blah blah.

SARU again involved in “contractual” controversy?

Besides Tricky Dicky should be PAYING the Lions for the mess he made there.

I certainly hope that Mr Strauli has tightened up on the contracts the GLRU / Lions Rugby (PTY) LTD are now entering into!

    @ Scrumdown:
He did make me laugh though, in a SA Rugby interview years ago he was asked: “What was your most embarrassing rugby moment”?

I forget the exact details but it was for the Tjarks in a SR game in New Zealand…
“Being passed by the linesman on my way to scoring a try.”
