Mils Muliaina

All Black Mils Muliaina is “distressed” and in shock over a sexual assault allegation levelled against him in Wales, his agent says.

The 34-year-old spent about 20 hours at Cardiff Bay Police station after being taken away by officers following a rugby game at Kingsholm Stadium. Police had 24 hours to charge him.

His agent, Simon Porter, says the arrest came as a “complete shock”.

Muliaina thought he was being taken in for random drug testing, Porter says.

“He had a night in the police cells, he’s pretty distressed, trying to deal with it, and it came as an absolute shock to him.”

Porter says Muliani will fight to clear his name.

The fullback, who played 100 tests for the All Blacks, is set to travel back to Ireland while police carry out an investigation.

His lawyer Matthew de Maid told OneNews that he has “totally denied the allegation that has been made”.

“He’s not been charged with any offence and has in fact been released whilst police carry out further investigation.”

“Whether he will or not be charged remains to be seen. I’ve got a certain view which I won’t express on camera.”

South Wales Police are leading the investigation and said: “A 34 year old man from the Galway area in the Irish Republic has been arrested on suspicion of committing a sexual assault. He has been released on police bail pending further investigation.”

Muliaina’s club Connacht also released a statement:

“Connacht Rugby confirm that player Mils Muliaina is currently assisting the South Wales Police with enquiries relating to an alleged incident in Cardiff in March of this year. As this is a legal matter, Connacht will be making no further comment at this time.”

In 2002, as a young player, Muliaina made headlines for urinating close to others at a Parnell bar.
