Emirates Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has named his team to take on the Melbourne Rebels in his side’s penultimate Vodacom Super Rugby tour match on Friday.
Ackermann has opted to rotate several players for the match.
In the forwards, Schalk van der Merwe, Armand van der Merwe and Ruan Dreyer will make up the front row. Robert Kruger will start at lock, while Derick Minnie has also been promoted to the starting line-up at flank.
Meanwhile, in the backline, Faf de Klerk will start at scrumhalf with Marnitz Boshoff linking up with him at flyhalf. Courtnall Skosan fills the left wing berth, shifting Sampie Mastriet to right wing.
Elton Jantjies will start at inside centre and Jaco van der Walt will start at fullback for the match.
Kick-off is at 10:40 SA Time on Friday.

Ons het altyd die Joodjies, “Akkerkoppies” genoem toe ons in die Weermag was…
Die Joodjies was oor die algemeen uitstekende soldate, maar daar was so paar uiterse vuilgatte en jippo-flokkers tussen die lot ook.
Sal nooit vergeet nie, een kortgat Joodjie gedurende “Basics” het nie eers geweet hoe om te skeer nie. Sy peleton het hom een dag gegryp, hom met die brandslang natgespuit en omo oor hom uitgemoer… en hom toe met harde besems geskrop van ‘n afstand af, tot sy vel wou, wou bloei… hy was daarna nie meer ‘n vuilgat nie… hahaha
Die ander insident was op die Lugafweereenheid gewees, toe die nuwe inname “Rowe” inkom, na ek reeds rang gekry het. Daar was 3 Jode tussen hulle gewees. Die Eenheid was ‘n taamlike tawwe Eenheid, bekend vir groot afkak – en natuurlik wou die 3 outjies nie daar wees nie, toe speel hulle maar die troefkaart dat die Eenheid nie ‘n Kosher Kombuis en Menasie gehad het nie, om sodoende her-uitgeplaas te kan word na elders.
Anyway, ons het hulle toe maar vir ‘n paar weke Cream Crackers & Redro Fishpaste laat eet (dit was die enigste Kosher kos daar gewees), tot hulle gecrack het en maar beginne eet het wat die ander ouens geeet het en toe aangebly het op die Eenheid.
Geen genade nie… hahaha
… maar hulle het goeie kanondonkies geword….

Hi MacroBull sorry I don’t have the numbers so can’t compare. Was thinking just this afternoon how less forthcoming rugby seems to be about mentioning figures as while it may be out there somewhere if you look at the articles about the BT deal from yesterday I don’t see the actual amounts being mentioned, yet it was all over the place the amounts they put up to broadcast football in the coming seasons. Plus how often to we hear about player salaries in rugby compared to football news where all the time we are hearing about players supposed salaries and crazy transfer fees etc, by the way do we even have a system of transfer fees in rugby if we do it is not one much spoken about.

I would guess depends which local one we refer to and which European competition – for the PRO12 teams that have made it into the top European competition I would say Europe is far more lucrative (if not on a total package certainly on a ratio of games played) while for the PRO12 team that is in the 2nd tier (European challenge cup) am not sure if they would get more out of Europe.
Premiership Rugby made a big song and dance about the new European competitions from this season bringing in more money that the old one. Not sure about the French Top 14 clubs though.

Im just curious because the figures are rarely mentioned. Just remember a year or two ago the top14 was the most expensive tournament in the world. I think that people are more inclined to follow local tournaments.
So this premiership deal must be massive as well.

Ja that’s my thoughts as well regarding lack of knowledge of money numbers in rugby compared to with football. Do you know if transfer fees are paid in rugby when players move?
A season long local league type set up versus the short bursts of intermittent European rugby like the set up is over here does perhaps get more support, although don’t underestimate the excitement playing the European games generates among the fans especially the luck ones that get to travel to away games in wonderful destinations.
I guess it would depend who your opponents were as well, would think if home stadium size were no issue you would get more Glasgow fans to a pool stage European fixture against Bath than a PRO12 round game against Zebre.
In the southern hemisphere would you say local tournaments like the Currie Cup, ITM Cup, Vodacom Cup get more support than Super Rugby? I would be surprised as Super Rugby is quite a long tournament of week in/week out rugby and a higher profile one than say your local Vodacom Cup with more of the top players in it.

Yip the new BT Deal will be massive (for us rugby folk but tiny compared to the football deal), must be if they are looking at expanding the league by two teams and being able to pay all the teams more than they get now.
