Jono Ross

Jono Ross

The Blue Bulls Company has granted Vodacom Blue Bulls loose forward Jono Ross an early release from his contract to allow the player the opportunity to join the French club, Stade Francais.

Ross will join the Paris-based club on 1 December 2014.

Vodacom Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke admitted that it was a set-back losing a former captain and versatile loose forward, but pointed to the huge stock of talented players that will still be available to the Blue Bulls Company in 2015.

Bulls Media Release

“Jono provided leadership and played at six, seven and eight for us when our loose forward department was depleted due to injuries, but thanks to our junior structures, the return of injured players and some new signings we have a strong group for next year,” Ludeke said.

“We have seen the likes of Jacques du Plessis, Roelof Smit and Janse van Rensburg breaking into the senior ranks despite being juniors, while Lappies Labuschagne also joined from the Cheetahs. With Springboks Pierre Spies and Arno Botha also returning to action and some proven players already on our books, we will have a very competitive group amongst our loose forwards,” Ludeke said.

“We want to thank Jono for his contributions and wish him well.”

    Whiteley might follow soon? 🙁
French clubs now may snatch Kolisi, Carr and Oupa too?
    😉

  • 2

Arno Botha, Lappies Labuschagne, Deon Stegman. Jacques du Plessis, flip vd Merwe as locks. Morne Mallet, Adriaan Strauss, vd merwe as front row. Might just work.

  • 3

Feel sorry for him….so much hate towards him from supporters who are probably the most fanatical of all supporters.
Hopefully he enjoys his rugby in Europe.

  • 4

He was a Vodacom Cup and Varsity Cup level player at the most

Faktap Ludeke not only kept playing him, he made him captain

We lost good loosies due to him, much better players than him, they could not get game time

    Bulls need a new coach.

If he keeps coaching us we’ll have a competitive Sport Pienaar team by the end if next year

  • 8

Damnit. Now we have to find another player to blame for the team playing shit.

    @ MacroBok:
Don’t worry, Spies will surely be back soon, won’t he?

    😉

    hello
many thanks to rugby talk for the intel on southern hemisphere rugby

I am a stade francais fan
difficult to find reasonable infos on Jono ross

he should be welcome here as we need a back up for parisse and lack some power with our current flanker

could you please give me some info pro and cons on this player

    thanks !!!

if you want some news on SA players in Top14
    may be I can help

Welcome to Rugby Talk fellow rugby lover !!
I am afraid you will not find too many complimentary words about Jono Ross. The owner of this site is a Bulls’ supporter and there are quite a few other supporters of the Bulls as well. Most of them don’t rate him. I have to admit I don’t rate him either.
Ross can play at no 8 but he is no fetcher / openside flanker at all. He hasn’t really been given time to settle at one position in the loosies.
I really hope he can up his game…for the sake of Stade Francaise!!

    Hello rebop75.

    Welcome to Rugby-Talk.

Hopefully we hear a lot more from you, and of course any news on SA players in France is always welcome.

  • 13

    @ rebop75:
Welcom to RT. Problem with Ross was that he never settled. Maybe he can have a good extended run at stade francais and surprise us all. he is a player that is well respected in his team environment.

  • 14

    @ Scrumdown:
ok but as they are quite numerous
it may take a while to write a comprehensive review

any particular player you would like me to begin with ????

  • 15

    I can begin with ours

Heinke Van der Meerwe (loosehead at Stade Français)
had mitigated years at leinster but saved their scrum a couple of times
    especially against toulouse in 2011
did have to compete with irish international at his position
    and considered as a challenger

Came last year at Stade Français and was elected as our best recruitment by the fans and one the best top14 prop by rugby paper midi olympique
did a lot to make our scrum a dominant one
    Played almost every match

Unfortunatly injured early this year (biceps tendon) and out for 4 months

    A proof of confidence
signed for 4 more years though injured
our scrum half Dupuy even asked for 5 publicly….

good tackler and pretty active on the field

trivia did face our other prop rabah slimani at JWC
    his family likes France

Meyer Bosman (center at Stade Francais)

Did begin slowly last year then was regularly one of our best center

Good passing (long and accurate) Tackles high to block adversary
Was used a couple of times as n°10 but not his position definitly

Has a more difficult second year with concurence from our french teenager danty and our fidjian arrow nayacalewu
on the bench for the important matchs (eg vs racing) but as he’s the only one who can cover N°10 difficult to say if this is a question of form or choice from our trainers

still signed for two more years

trivia: act as tranlator for Morne Steyn

Morne Steyn (N°10 at Stade Français)

    big disappointment last year
was hired by trainers with restrictive game intentions
and now works with Gonzalo Quesada who asks to take more initiatives

Suffers against our young N°10 plisson who is gifted with a great passing
    worst
Morne did lose his kicking during the year
Our pack is not dominant and he is not used to this situation where you have to play more and make others play

Springboks not very helpful for him
called and do not play (four nations autumn tour)
Most of our fans count him out
Seems to be a fighter and had already difficulties in the past
    so who knows ?
Proved nothing (especially not his salary) and even lost his rugby

    trivia
    Morne means dreary in French
like in Waterlow Waterloo dreary plain (a famous Victor hugo poem called expiation…) I let you imagine the french commentaries…

Still has 1 and half year with us… we will see
does not speak a word of french yet…
and did play while it was snowing at bucarest this month…
a tremendous experience for our southern hemisphere players apparently

Hi rebop75, welcome nice to see new names here. Thanks for taking the time to give some detail on how the players are doing, also nice to get the trivia bits, these are bits of info that often mainly the clubs fans have so its nice to get it out on a wider forum.
Disappointed to hear about Morne Steyn as am a big fan of him, he is a player who has achieved so much and has many records behind his name, but from what you wrote and his lack of game time for a while now with the Springboks it seems he is on a bit of a dip. Hopefully he will pick himself up to his high standards again soon and that he is not past his peak. You mentioned him now needing to play a higher tempo passing game rather than merely a kicking game, in his early days at Blue Bulls if memory serves me correct he was seen as a player who was ‘more rounded’ and possibly not the best kicker as he had to wait for game time behind Louis Strydom and also Derrick Hougaard. It is understandable that for the good of France your team will play Plisson ahead of him most times but I think you will appreciate Morne Steyn’s true value during the 6 Nations should Plisson be away on national duty.

    15 @ rebop75:
Jono Ross is a very limited player, does not have excellent hands and goes into contact situations far too upright in his stance.

He also tends to die with the ball and possession is often turned over after he has tried to take the ball up.

As a Bulls supporter I am glad to see him leave the Blue Bulls Company.

The Bulls coach, Frans Ludeke, persisted with Ross for a long time, even also playing him in the openside flanker role, which suits him even less, as he is no traditional fetcher and not fast enough to get to the breakdowns as is expected from an opensider.

I fear that Stade Francais has bought poorly… very poorly indeed.

based on toulouse fan (real ones I mean) commentaries and what I have seen

vermaak has become the third choice in toulouse
    behind doussain
    and young bezy

    cons vermaak is
    poor kicking in the game
not very inspirationnal in the field
    pro
    quite consistent

doussain appears ahead though it is not his best season
as a better tackler and a ninth forward

bezy is loved by the fan as quick and dangerous
    the french flair guy
    but very thin…

both doussain or bezy can drop or kick penalties
which can be useful in the mind of trainers

it is guessed vermaak wil be free at the end of the year
bad luck for him as Toulouse was down for the years he was there

    pretty disappointing I guess
but i believe he will stay a lot on the bench this season if no one is injured

toulouse has another very young 9 for next year
doubt vermmak perf were high enough to join a top team in the league

    thanks
unfortunatly it is not the frenchness of plisson that puts morne on the bench
but merely his poor performance and absences with the boks
i guess it is a difficult time for him
if he could re-gain confidence with his kicking
sure he will be needed and used
he ‘s pretty precise at training but misses a lot during the game
    tough !!!

    Wouah
    poor Jono
looks like the man you take only to make 15
    will try keep you updated
may been the ball will be more easy released and he will be lower in his stance
    as we are upside down…
    still poor hands to correct
    apart from work…

    thanks for the input

Nice to have some frenchies here. Closest thing we had was Headboy Nortier, but he was a very poor frenchman.

    Are you using google translate?

Le bleh!!! Je te pe, go poo.

Bad news for the French this weekend, I picked them to win, so we all know what that will mean 😆
And so my hate hate affair with the team who messes up my Superbru most often will continue 😉

So Frenchie… I will call you Frenchie because I have nicknames for everybody…

This weekend it’s France vs Wallabies, any predictions?

  • 28

    @ rebop75:
    Howzit Rebop, welcome to RT.
One question, how on earth can the French supporters manage to stick behind their team when the team is so erratic?
It will drive me crazy knowing my team will lose to any opposition on any given day, and then, once every 4 years during the World Cup, they will pull off one surprise win against a better team, only to implode again and dish up mediocre rugby for the next 4 years.
I take my hat off to you guys who still believe in and stand behind the team, even when they manage to come last in the 6 Nations
