Duane Vermeulen

Duane Vermeulen

English club Bath are reportedly setting their sights on signing Springbok and Stormers No 8 Duane Vermeulen after next year’s Rugby World Cup.

The 28-year-old has been instrumental for the Springboks this season and was recently also shortlisted as an IRB World Rugby Player of the year nominee.

According to the Express.co.uk website, Bath are lining up Vermeulen as a second marquee player alongside Wallaby scrumhalf Will Genia.

The deal, which would be worth £ 450 000 (about R 7.8 Million) per season, would make him the second-highest earner in the Premiership behind new rugby league recruit Sam Burgess.

Other players nominated alongside Vermeulen for the IRB World Rugby Player of the year are his compatriot Willie le Roux, Ireland’s Jonathan Sexton, and All Blacks Brodie Retallick and Julian Savea.

Next year’s Rugby World Cup, to be staged in England and Wales, runs from 18 September to 31 October.

Nice, very nice!!!!! How can our unions compete with that sort of cash. And us Lions fans are happy with a rumoured R30mil sponsorship for SR. That’s about a 3rd of an annual sponsorship.

Yeah… I suppose it’s about 5 times as much as a “RICH” South African Franchise could offer a very valuable player.

From the player’s perspective he would not be able to refuse an offer like that.

In 5 years overseas, he could earn enough to be very comfortable when he returns to SA… and do whatever he wants to from thereon in, set up for life.

  • 4

This SINGLE OFFER, is larger than the total player budget of the majority, if not all, of the individual Currie Cup First Division Unions!

  • 5

Geez that is crazy, almost as much as Bakkies and Habana make. Will be tough to turn down for Duane.

This new European cup deal has been extremely sweet for the English it seems.

“As expected, the base salary cap level will rise to £5.1million (€6.43m), plus £400,000 (€504,000) in home-grown player credits.
This season’s salary cap is set at £5million €6.3m).
Each Premiership club will additionally be able to nominate up to two ‘excluded players’ whose salary is not included in the cap.
The changes were confirmed following a meeting on Wednesday of Premiership Rugby’s chairman and shareholder group. Premiership clubs can already nominate one so-called ‘marquee player’ in their squad, whose wages are excluded from the salary cap constraints.”

There is more to come.(or go)

Provided of course that he lives a comfortable and not OTT lifestyle and puts the moola into some very sound investments. Not sure what his tax exposure will be, but he will have a lot of money to burn after expenses.

    Very good for Duane.
I wonder what that old Keo Kenner, HG thinks of this offer for a useless Spermwhale 😆

    @ nortie:
8 Hi my friend. One of the defences against libel
is “FAIR COMMENT”Stormers Boy can confirm)`
There was indeed a time when Duane was slow, overweight
and sluggish.(Good Lord ,I am being mischievous today)
Happily for SA this is no longer the case, and he is
    now a magnificent player.
Frankly,I miss HG who often made provocative comments just to stir debate. His and Pedi,s arguments
were highly entertaining,as were those he had with you.
He knew his rugby, but I was often appalled by the lewd
language directed towards Pedi and Dawn.Too few
people stood up to him .To your credit, you were one person who did.
    Regards pal.Rye

Ha ha Rye, that’s why I gave the wink after the post.
I remember the Spermwhale and Donkey de Villiers comments, but to be fair, it was only because they play for WP/Stormers that he didn’t rate or like them, more than what they did or didn’t do on the field.
His dislike for the Visdorpie sometimes clouded his judgment.
I too miss Pedi, especially when she and Sharks Lover got stuck into each other.

Weet nie, dalk omdat hy so baie “gechirp” het op die veld?
Hy is blykbaar die grapgat in die span en het baie gepraat op die veld

    Imagine ET on this site?

How many postings from Extraball would it take before GBS kicks him?

Especially when he had half a bottle of his 30 year old Pinotage
