BrumbiesThe Brumbies are hoping that their 67 / 0 Super Rugby warm up victory over an ACT XV at Viking Park has not come at a price after they picked up several injuries.

The scoreline of the brutal match shows how convincing the victory was but David Pocock had to have attention to his bleeding eye, flying winger Henry Speight bruised his ribs and No 8 Fotu Auelua picked up a knee injury.

The Brumbies had 11 internationals in their line up as they want to be as ready as they can be for their Super Rugby season opener against the Reds at Canberra Stadium on 22 February.

The Super Rugby trial match gave the Brumbies a chance to field a near full strength team ahead of the Reds opener.

Fotu Auelua had to leave the field after 20 minutes and Speight was only on the field for 38 minutes but still managed to score a try.

“We’re not sure on Fotu, he came off the field with a little bit of pain so we will just see how he pulls up and he might need a scan,” Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham told the Canberra Times.

“We’ll wait and see how ‘Fots’ and Henry recover, but everyone else got through unscathed.”

Pocock had to have stictches on his right eye having returned to the field for the first time in 11 months following a knee reconstruction.

“You can do as much training as you want, but being out there is what you need … it was a bit scrappy,” Pocock said.

“There were a lot of cobwebs last week, but there was a bit more rhythm in defence and attack. After being out for so long I’m just enjoying being back out there.

“The lungs aren’t burning as much but I’m a lot sorer this week.”

The Brumbies made a strong start in the Super Rugby warm up and score four tries in the first half but when the ACT XV team tired the Brumbies superior fitness helped to open the floodgates.

Hooker Siliva Siliva scored a hat-trick and speedy back Robbie Coleman scored two tries.

The Brumbies new Japanese signing Harumichi Tatekawa also scored his first try for the Brumbies.

Matt Toomua took control of the goal kicking as Christian Lealiifano is out injured until next month.

“We still have a way to go before the season and we have to pinpoint a couple of areas we can improve,” Pocock said.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham said that despite the injuries he was happy with the result.

“I’m pleased with the way we performed and the way we finished off,” Larkham said.

“You can’t come into these games half-hearted. The guys were ready for a very confrontational game and that’s what we got. You run the risk but you need the game time.”

The Brumbies will play against the ACT XV again on Friday in an intra-club match.

I can’t read too much into results like this, last week we lost 15-11 to the Highlanders in Queenstown.
