Jake WhiteBrendan VenterSharksThe Jake White saga continues as the most recent indications are that Brendan Venter will be leaving his temporary position as Sharks Director of Rugby at the end of the 2013 Currie Cup, making way for the appointment of Jake White in the same position.

Last week it was rumoured that White could become the new Director of Rugby at the Sharks, but Brendan Venter was already in the position and uncertainty surrounded whether Venter would stay on.

The media speculated that Brendan Venter might stay on as a consultant, much like his role at Saracens in the UK.

This week’s rumour is that Venter wants to spend more time at his medical practice in Strand, near Cape Town. It was always going to be difficult for Venter to juggle all roles between his medical practice, family life, the Director of Rugby position at the Sharks and the consultancy with Englich club Saracents… and do justice to all.

Apparently Brendan Venter only agreed to work with the Sharks till the end of October 2013.

Sharks CEO, John Smit, and his mentor Jake White has come some distance… almost 16 years, since John Smit was 16, so it sounds plausible and realistic to assume that Jake White is almost certain to sign a 2-year contract with the Sharks, leaving him free to persue his ambition to coach an international team again after 2015 (the year of the next Rugby World Cup).

It seems somewhat of a pity as the Sharks have started playing an exciting and successful braand of rugby in the Currie Cup, currently deservedly leading the Currie Cup Log.

Questions now also need to be asked about the mercenary nature of Jake White, who appears to be loyal to one peson only.. and that is the ambitions of himself.

Jake the Snake! For all Jake’s success, he appears unsatisfied, always chasing the next opportunity. And so it was when he applied for the Wallaby coaching position ”If Jake made his decision for family reasons, it’s an entirely different matter. No reasonable person would stand in the way of somebody with a desire to be closer to loved ones.
Where exactly are Jake’s loved ones? His ex wife and kids are in the Cape, his mother is in Joburg so unless it is John Smit Durban does not make much sense.
There can be no argument from me that Jake is one of the finest coaches in the game today and will be a wonderful asset to the Sharks.
He has complete faith in his program borders on the delusional, and yet he seems to have an uncanny knack of willing his vision into a reality. he understands the factors which underpin success in team sports as well as anyone.
He ensures that he surrounds himself with the very best personnel. He pays attention to standards and details and he always maintains the infectious conviction that his program will produce success. He is usually right.
It will demand a lot of give and take and John Smit’s role will be pivotal. He will be judged by his ability to produce the silverware that the Shark supporters demand. Myself for one included.

Jake the Snake. Enough said. He was badly shafted by SARU and Hoskins. But hopefully he will not stifle the Sharks new style of running rugby.

Well is he coming or not to Sharks? I have also read on PlanetRugby that he would like to coach at the Stormers.

I did read when Venter joined the Sharks that he was only going to do consulting work this year. Then read he was DOR so not 100% sure what is going on. Did hear the from one of the commentators during the Sharks game on Friday he said that Jake will be DOR at Sharks next year. So it could be true time will tell. I think Sharks may miss Venter. He has done some good work there and it is only telling now. Took almost the whole season as we did struggle in most our games except the last two and against the Bulls. I do hope if Jake comes we can still play our off-loading game as we know Jake likes a very different game style.

I rate Jake he is a great coach, just that Venter is getting his game plan working well now and was hoping we could carry this style into SR next year. Look where ever Jake has coached he has been successful. So we have to hope he can bring us a Cup if he does come to the Sharks. Just don’t change our off-loading game Jake that is how us Shark Supporters like to see our team play. Also remember we have some small players in our team but they are awesome so select them as well… 🙂

Pity he couldn’t have come to coach the Stormers in place of Alistair Coetzee. I know for us Stompies fans it’s just wishful thinking, we’ll never be rid of Toetie, sigh!
