South AfricaThe Springbok side for Saturday’s Castle Lager Rugby Championship opener against Argentina at Soccer City in Soweto shows four changes from the team which beat Samoa in June.

Two of the changes are in the starting XV, both of them in the forwards, and two on the bench for this Test, which forms part of the Nelson Mandela Sport & Culture Day activities.

Upfront, Duane Vermeulen is back in action after an injury lay-off and takes over from the injured Pierre Spies at No 8.

At lock, Juandré Kruger and Flip van der Merwe swap places, with the latter moving to the bench and the former starting next to Eben Etzebeth in the middle row.

On the bench, there is a return for the experienced duo of Fourie du Preez and Gurthrö Steenkamp.

“Continuity has been key for us this year and that is why we’ve opted not to make too many changes to the team for Saturday’s Test against Argentina,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“It’s great to have Duane back at No 8, while Juandré has been doing great work in the line-outs all season long. To have someone of the calibre of Flip on the bench, next to the experience Fourie and Gurthrö bring to the team, is a great situation to be in.”

Looking ahead to the Test, Meyer said: “It’s a marvellous occasion and special to be part of a unique day where we can all celebrate the contributions former president Mandela made to South Africa.

“I think it was clear last year that the Argentineans are not in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship to make up the numbers, which means we will have to be focused on doing the little things right. They’ve been together for a few weeks now and will be a tough opponent on Saturday.

“We’ve now done the hard work on the training pitch and I can see the players are keen to get back onto the field for a Test. Now we need to put into practice what we’ve been working on and continue where we left off against Samoa, looking for try-scoring opportunities in the process.”

Interesting that Heyneke prefers to start with Adriaan Strauss over Bismarck du Plessis at hooker!

Damn, Ruan Pienaar starts at scrumhalf… eish!

The rest of the starting lineup is quite as expected.

Hey… I see we have the 23-player scenario, which means a full front row on the bench… and 3 backline players… so a 5 / 3 split! Goodie!

Gurthro over Trevor Nyakane… I can live with that… Siya Kolisi over Marcell Coetzee… hell I’m glad! Jan Serfontein on the bench over Zane Kirchner, the feeling must be that Lambie could move to fullback and Willie le Roux could move to wing if needed, so sensible getting another centre in. Actually the backline replacements are quite versatile!

Not a bad team at all. If they they don’t kick every bloody ball away aimlessly, they can snot klap the Argies.

Good team. I am not sold on Bjorn or Coenie (at TH) at this level, I would have Adriaanse, the Griquas game confirmed his status as one of the better scrumming TH’s in SA

But I’m nitpicking. On the whole its the best team we have available.

    3 @ Stormersboy:
I’m a bit worried about Juandré Kruger… he definately adds value at the lineout, but having seen a documntary yesterday (Springbok Saga 2008 – 2012), it was remarkable how many tackles Juandré Kruger missed when tries were scored against the Bokke.

I would maybe have started with him, still… for this game.

When replacements need to be done, Heyneke must do a straight swop with Flip coming in for Juandré Kruger… and then I would move Eben Etzebeth to No 5 locking position and have Flip concentrate on the No 4 role.

By the 2nd or at most the 3rd Test from now I would have Flip at No 4, Eben Etzebeth at No 5 and Juandré Kruger could be on the bench. Eventually Pieter-Steph du Toit could replace Juandré Kruger on the bench.

I would phase out Ruan Pienaar gradually too, he’s good enough for Northern Hemisphere club rugby, but not good enough for Springbok rugby and The Rugby Championship.

Regarding tighthead.. I’m apprehensive about Coenie at tighthead as well, but let’s give him a game coming on from the bench and see how he goes under the new scrum engage rules… if he does not fire, then move him back to loosehead and stick to that, then bring in Lourens Adriaanse as tighthead cover. I’m generally apprehensive about our scrums this weekend anyway, having had so little time to prepare for the new engage sequence.

Yes, I agree with most of what you have just said. To be honest I’m not a big fan of either Juandre or Flip. Don’t know why. I would have Franco an PSDT.

    But that is just me.

Coenie needs to spend at least 1 season at TH @ CC level. The see how he fares at SR level. But to move him across from LH @ international level, not a good idea.
