SharksThe Sharks have named their squad to host the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup, Premier Division clash on Friday 16 August 2013.

Tim Whitehead is injured and is replaced by Heimar Williams and recent acquisition from the Southern Kings, SP Marais, gets the nod at right wing which in itself seems strange because Odwa Ndungane is a winger preferred at fullback whereas SP Marais is a fullback now getting the start on wing.

Charl McLeod, although struggling at scrumhalf against Griquas last weekend retains his place at scrumhalf with Cobus Reinach still on the bench.

Quotes from coaches:

Forwards Coach, Brad Macleod-Henderson:
“Most people would have been pretty impressed with the Lions in their two matches against the Kings, they were almost in the rugby wilderness for the past six months, but when the chance came, they took it. They play a nice brand of rugby, they’re physical upfront and they also look to move the ball around. They’re a quality side.”

Backline Coach, Sean Everitt:
“The Lions will want to get onto the winning track, likewise with us as well, they’re a tough team to play against, they contest the breakdown really well and they defend well around the fringes of the rucks. They are physical but they also like to move the ball around, so defensively, we’ll need to hold our width as well as contain them around the edges.”

Sharks: 15 Odwa Ndungane, 14 SP Marais, 13 Louis Ludik, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Butch James, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Jacques Botes (Captain), 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Brynard Stander, 5 Marco Wentzel, 4 Edwin Hewitt, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Dale Chadwick
Replacements: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Rayno Gerber, 18 Peet Marais, 19 Tera Mtembu, 20 Cobus Reinach, 21 Fred Zeilinga, 22 Jaco van Tonder

On paper, this team looks slightly weaker than the Lions.

  • 2

Just feel the Sharks should use Tera at 8 and Jacques at 6, then steadily bleed Brynard in.

Adriaanse a good signing for the sharkies.

    3 @ MacroBull:
Yes that was a great signing getting Lourens Adriaanse to Sharks.

Well done Smitty. Now go and get Mnisi back…. πŸ™‚

Smitty go and get our twins back from the Bulls boet. Want us to get the Kriel twins back…. πŸ™‚

Doubt we will get Pat Howard back from Province, but we should go after Mnisi and try and get him back to Sharks.

What my Sharks really do need is another top class Loosehead. Just hope now we don’t mess Herbst about by making him play LH next year. As our only quality LH is Beast and it looks like we will be rotating a lot next year to keep the players fresh and injury free.
