sharksSharks rugby seems to be in disarray as stories surface regarding issues within the Union and players! Now even though nothing has been confirmed officially, it does seem to make sense as to why the sudden problems the Sharks are having.

Sport24

What has been clear from a supporter’s viewpoint is that although injuries are playing a major role in the problems, it still remains clear that there are other areas of concern. The article below puts things into perspective and “if true” should be dealt with immediately and the players involved taken to task as there is no place for this kind of behavior within our sporting fraternities.

If the captain is alone on this crusade, should he answer in full and be released from his contract? Another issue still unresolved is the dropping of Ryan Kankowski from the Sharks squad, as it does not make sense and this is a coaching staff issue but is there more to the story?

One thing is very clear now and that is that injuries alone are not to blame for the Sharks failures this season.

Anglo-Boere-oorlog woed oënskynlik weer in Haaie-rugby.

In a strongly worded response The Sharks Rugby Union has release the following Media Release:

Durban, 14 May 2013: With reference to an article that appeared in the Beeld Newspaper yesterday, The Sharks (Pty) Ltd would like to place on record the following:

The Sharks strongly condemn this article, which borders on sensational and tabloid journalism. The report is unsubstantiated and irresponsible and we strongly deny that any such rift is evident in the camp.

In response to the article, The Sharks captain, Keegan Daniel stated, “I was shocked to hear about these allegations. I can’t believe that someone would say this about me in order to try and sell newspapers. It is an attack on my integrity, which is very disappointing, and it is most untrue.

“I have never had a problem with any person in our rugby squad. Since this report surfaced I have had nothing but support from my teammates of all cultures. This is a lesson that younger players in our squad can learn – when a team is struggling with form then you become an easy target.”

The Sharks CEO, Brian van Zyl added, “The Sharks team’s strength has always been its diversity. The same squad pulled together less than 12 months ago to get into the Vodacom Super Rugby Final. They play for each other and their jersey. The cultural and language demographics within the team are a strength from which the team has drawn.

“I have been in touch with John Plumtree and team management and have been informed that at a team meeting, which took place this afternoon, all players stood firmly behind Keegan Daniel as Captain.”

The Sharks are focused on their upcoming match against the Force on Friday and are determined to end their tour on a positive note.

    SS says

As for the Sharks, they looked like they were getting their attacking game together against the Chiefs two weeks ago, but after watching the Chiefs’ last two games, maybe we have to concede that the champions aren’t the team they were a year ago.

Scoring four tries against them isn’t the feat it used to be, when they were one of the better defensive teams.

Of course the Sharks’ defeat, more so than the Stormers, has brought out the usual predictable imagery about guillotines and axes being sharpened for the coaching team.

But before giving in to the predictable knee-jerk response, you should ask yourself if any coaching staff would survive with the injury epidemic the Sharks have had to put up with.

It’s not a question of them not still having quality players available, it’s just the complete absence of any continuity from one week to the next that is the problem.

GR is a bit bitchy with the Stormers , i say. Amazed

In terms of winning and losing, South Africa had to turn to an unlikely source in the form of the Southern Kings to bring a bit of self-respect to proceedings this weekend, with the Eastern Cape side looking a different team against the Highlanders from the one that got smashed by the Waratahs.

It was down to them fronting this time, playing with the character that had been the hallmark of most of the rest of the season, and they go into the bye week deserving of their rest.

The win over the Highlanders was enough to leapfrog them into 13th place, and with the four points for the bye to be banked this week, they could even climb a position higher than that if the Stormers wipe out the Rebels.

Not that anyone should be expecting that to happen as the Stormers look incapable of taking the ball beyond a couple of phases without dropping it.

“The first thing we spoke about in the change room after losing to the Reds last week was that we simply had to beat the Force. It is an absolute must-win game for Sharks rugby. We have to snap out of this losing run,” said assistant coach Grant Bashford.

“We have to come up with something exceptional. We really want to finish on a high, and if that is to happen we have to respect the fact that the Force are not the pushovers they might have been in the past.”

“In this competition you would be naive to think you will go unbeaten. Every team loses a game or two, but you have to quickly get back to winning ways so that you don’t get into a downward spiral, and we have not been able to prevent that and are currently low on self-belief,” Bashford said.

“Every week for us has been like starting again, with new people coming in for injured players.

“It is hard for new combinations to instantly play well. And that is what has happened to us. We simply are not playing well enough,” he said.

I don’t understand Afrikaans too well, so not 100% sure what is said above. However, have read on other rugby sites what the Beeld has said. I honestly think it is sensational reporting and a lot of utter rubbish spewed out by Beeld. I have seen Keegan on many many occasions with all the afrikaans speaking players playing golf together right here where I live. Also have seen them many times together at Craig’s coffee shop during the week together. So why the heck would they hang around with each other if they never got on? What a lot of bull crap this article is by this journalist. He should be fired trying to stir absolute rubbish.

Our team is not playing well because of no consistency in team selection because of the huge amount of injuries we have had. NO team would have performed well without their best it is as simply as that.

The only problem I do see is between Kanko and Plum. Have no idea what it is, but he left him behind for this tour which he should not have done. That is the only problem I do see between coach and one player.

I personally think the article from Beeld doing its round could very well bond our team more from here on.

Good luck to my Sharks for their game against the Force. I know our season is over but we still have 5 more games to play and will support them no matter what playing those games.

Go Sharks you still have many of your loyal supporters behind you.

Phew, thankfully the article has been rubbished by the team, players on FB and twitter rubbishing this story what more will journo’s do to sell a story??? and I used to respect Christo Buchner as a sports journo? ai ai ai

    6 @ Sharks_forever:
    Howzit Bro,

    How you doing? Hope well.

Look this is a utter rubbish article just written to stir absolute havoc out there. That journalist should be fired for making up absolute rubbish. I have seen Keegan with all the afrikaans players on many occasions together here playing golf and they go just about every week (when no on tour) together to Craig’s coffee shop. Have seen them all together there many many times. So why would they hang out if they never got on? This article from Beeld is sensational rubbish. Like kicking a dog when its down. So our Sharks are not doing well so everyone is climbing into them. Bloody useless bunch that write such crap. So angry about this.

Anyhow our team took us on a magnificent ride last year to the final playing beautiful rugby. They will again when we get our full team back. Our season is over but we will be back next year. Also we still have 5 more games to play. Looking forward to us kicking butt once we get some players back in those games.

    Denial, denial , denial.

Two Afrikaans sayings comes to mind.

Waar daar n rokie is is daar n vuurtjie (something like where there is smoke there must be a fire)
Kop in die sand druk soos n volstruis (head in the sand like a ostrich)

But serious , of course the players will in public like each other, they are contracted to do it. They must keep face or else they will bring the Union is disrepute.

All i said above is meant tongue in the cheek, just to stir your sensitive souls. Happy-Grin This article was deliberate placed by a WP journo who wants the Sharks to wake up and pull the Bulls down. The-Incredible-Hulk

Die engelse ou sê:“I don’t know what you mean”

Fark, I just love the protective yet very sensitive mindset by the Sharks Supporters… well done my Sharkie friends… Oompie Puma and Tjarkie_Fornever, you are to be commended for believing in your team this blindly and unwaveringly!

Goooooooooo Tjarks, moer die Force pimpel en pers!

Look, although this seems to be a sensationalist Article, Christo Buchner is a nice chap and not one to gargle about things which are not there, so all I can say is that I hope he has this one totally wrong!

Where there’s smoke, there is a Sharks tail on fire on the grill…. hehehe

Apart from the injuries the Sharks have suffered all season (which is typically hailed as the uber reason for the losses), there’s something deeper wrong, something stirring in the squad and it’s corridors…. and there’s certainly a backline incapable of stringing their attack together well enough and at the same time defending very poorly. So whatever the reason / rift / upheavel… or whatever else you would like to call it, it has to be fixed…. both on defence and on attack.

The Sharks are too good a team, with too much depth, to function this poorly and operate this badly!

I certainly do not wish bad luck or bad karma on the Sharks, and I expect the Bulls to be able to beat a fully functional Sharks side… I want no excuses afterwards from either the Bulls or the Sharks. I want the Bulls to deserve going into the play-off’s, should they get there and should this Sharks side not beat them at least in Durban.

In fact, I predict that the Bulls will still lose one of the 2 clashes against the Sharks and probably the away game against the Stormers too…. but I want the Bulls to at least pick up losing bonus points in both those losses.

The Bulls have a bit of a buffer on the Log against their 3 nearest SA rivals, but the end goal must be to finish 1st or 2nd on the Combined Log, not 3rd.
