Stormers and Western Province head coach Allister Coetzee has signed a new contract to stay in Cape Town until 2015 and has turned down the opportunity to join Heyneke Meyer’s new Springbok coaching staff

Eyewitness News

This will be confirmed by the union on Monday afternoon.

Coetzee, a former assistant with the national team under Jake White, was thought to be a candidate for the top job before losing out to Meyer.

It is understood that he was approached by the former Bulls director of coaching to join his staff but after lengthy consideration, declined.

This latest move will then see the coaching team of Coetzee, Robbie Fleck and Matthew Proudfoot remain in place and is a welcomed boost ahead of their Super Rugby season opener against the Hurricanes at Newlands on Saturday.

From the Stormers website – WP Rugby today announced a 3-year extension to head coach Allister Coetzee’s contract. 3-year contract extensions have also been offered to assistant coaches Robbie Fleck and Matthew Proudfoot, as well as to Defence Coach Jacque Nienaber and WP Vodacom Cup and U20 Coach John Dobson.

WP Rugby also confirmed that a High Performance Manager reporting directly to Allister Coetzee, would be appointed shortly. This portfolio would include the management of player affairs both on and off the pitch, including assistance with player contracting for the Province.

Commenting on the news Allister Coetzee said, “Contrary to recent media reports our management team and athletes are a very happy and settled group. As a management team we were all eager to re-affirm our commitment to WP and hopefully this puts this matter to bed. The appointment of the High Performance Manager will streamline and simplify our contracting procedures, as well as handling all player and admin affairs, ensuring the coaches and athletes have complete freedom to focus solely on the game.”

“It’s a big week for us and as a group our focus is on one thing and one thing only – our opener against the Hurricanes on Saturday. We are well prepared, very motivated and will be going all out to make this a big year.” concluded the Coach.

    4 @ Just For Kicks:
Will the High Performance Manager be Peter Snormonster?

@ GBS Lol, don’t get JFK started, i have just been deleted off his Christmas shopping list for being funny!

    6 @ Cheetah4eva:
Bwahahaha… watch, the Snor stands a bloody good chance to get the job!

  • 8

    Then watch Stormers/WP regress

@ grootblousmile, @ Cheetah4eva: I look at you both with tears of sympathy in my eyes. I think Divvy would make a wonderful HP manager, in fact an even better HP salesman, which will unfortunately keep him away from the Stormers as he sells his printers to GBS and the rest of the third world!

Well thanks WP/Stormers, now i can relax a bit. I never thought anything about AC, he killed the Springbok back line under Jake. And i can not see any Cups coming Cape Towns way with him there, sorry thats my view and i have the ability to eat a lot off humble pie.
