Centres Wandile Mjekevu and Morgan Newman has joined the Sharks for trials on Monday as they prepare for the 2012 Super Rugby tournament.

The Sharks will give Mjekevu and Newman a chance to impress as they aim to bolster their midfield after the departure of Stefan Terblanche and Adrian Jacobs.

After falling out of favour with the Lions, 20-year-old former Baby Bok Mjekevu will have the opportunity to earn a contract at the Sharks. The King Edward School old boy featured for the Lions in Super Rugby in 2010, playing 10 out of their 13 matches at wing. His highlight was a hat-trick in the 72-65 loss to the Chiefs that season. An injury forced him out for a while and he then struggled to regain a spot in the senior side, spending this year with the Lions’ Under-21 side.

Newman, who captained Emerging Boks to the 2008 Nations Cup, has successfully recovered from a broken leg that he suffered with the Stormers against the Bulls in 2010. The 25-year-old spent 2011 with Free State in the Vodacom Cup. He is expected to train with the Sean Everitt-coached Sharks’ Vodacom Cup squad.

Fark, Sharks scraping the bottom of the barrel with these 2 plonkers.

Mjekevu’s defence is uber kak, and Newman is just an ‘also-run’ type of player.

Was Mjekevu not primarily a wing? He was pretty good if I am thinking of the same guy.

Morgan Newman? LOL, if the States don’t want to pay your salary then you know you must be kak. Surely there is centre playing club rugby in KZN better than him?

    @ Loosehead:
Mjekevu played just about the whole season at centre for the Lions U/21.

Had a couple of decent games, but there’s just that look of delicacy about him IMO.

He didn’t come across as the type of player that Mitchell would use on an ongoing basis.

He has loads of talent, but I have heard he maybe does not have the work ethic required of him at this level. He has proven with the U21’s that he has loads of attacking ability, but as many have said he may lack something in defence. He is tall, at 1.90m and weighs 94kg. So he isn’t too small.
