What did it feel like going cold-turkey without Rugby-Talk for 2 days?

We’re finally back on line after a disasterous SQL Database crash. In simple terms, SQL is the Database we use to store information which integrates with the web site’s content and administrative pages at the Web Hosts.

I think you’ll appreciate that after 4217 Articles, the Database and it’s 173 000 comments is quite a fatty.

Some of the running queries on the Database has to count, list and refer back through all Articles, Web Pages and Comments right to the start of this web site, in August 2009 (with some Articles and comments brought over from a temporary web site from as early as 28 July 2009).

Certain busy web sites and blog sites have totally done away with Archived Links, simply because it’s easier to manage the Size of their Database and queries that way, but I’m loathe to do that, seeing as we have a rich history on this site, with quality content which we might want to re-read and savour.

Accordingly certain scripts and queries ran so long that it caused a fatal lock on the system.

Yesterday was my 10th wedding aniversary, to my patient and understanding wife, as a result of which the occasion required me to forget about fixing this “Animal” last night and to take my wife out on the town for a monster dinner and a lovely evening.

Well, the web site is fixed now, and slowly I will re-introduce some of the features in the Side-Bars to bring content back to full functionality.

Back to rugby, get your blogging boots on!

Regards,

On a more serious note, congrats on the anniversary, and well done in getting the site back up, I have grown rather fond of the site, the content, the banter, and the bloggers – certainly made the WC more interesting, and the future too, I hope.

    @ superBul:
I was going to mail you to find out what was going on, seems GBS has had a bit of a ‘meltdown’!! 😆

First I thought that it was Smiles attempt to get rid of me, his nemesis. Then I thought no, he was just fed up with SuperBul moaning about the referees. Then I thought it was because of all the shyte biltongbek was talking. My last idea was that it was the only way he knew of getting rid of JFK. Now I see it’s because he just couldn’t keep his hands off the old lady. Geez GBS, what are we going to have to put up with on your 20th anniversary?

  • 17

Fark, by the way you lot are going on one would swear you guys (and gals) are shit scared of me banning you!

Do I really come accross so strict?

    Hahahaha

    Turk, I mean Skurk, Shyte?

I speak only the truff, While you sit snuggly behind your keyboard sipping your wife`s coffee, I have to leave no stone unturned to find the truff. I have to use creative license to entertain you lot whilst being polite and not too rough on making statements.

You just can`t handle the truff mun.

OK, I’ve monitored the site long enough now for today… it seems fully stable, CPU usage at the server on average under 3%, memory usage very low… no errors

I declare the site fully fit!

Congratulations GBS on your anniversary! Good to see you’re back on the air, was wondering what had happened. The smileys are nice but when they first were put on thought they may take a up a lot of space/memory or whatever you IT folk call it, must be possible to see how much bigger posts are with them than those without.

  • 21

Oh yes , congrats to Handbriekie for holding out 10 years with with you. Great hope you guys had a good night out.
    Geluk GBS.
