Folks, friends and fuddy-duddies,

When one starts a web site, the first thing you do is to register a Domain… and through time it becomes your signature, brand name, the web site’s personal name and surname, much like a person has a name and surname. That is your Identity, that is how people know how to find you, and know what you look and sound like.

For a person to move house, or from Province to Province, or perhaps from Country to Country, is rightly seen as a massive decision and reknowned to be one off the most traumatic occurences in life, only beaten by death in the family or divorce from your spouse.

One has to move your worldly possessions, change addresses at a plethera of places… and pay the movers a hefty sum of money… and often you are unavailable to the world for a number of days or weeks. Then one has to also see to connection of utilities like water and electricity… what a schlepp!

Sounds familiar?

The upside of it will be when the move is to a tripple-story mansion, with servants quarters, a massive heated pool, enough bedrooms and above all the best entertainment Lapa in the world. This could be a place where one bypasses rush hour traffic, because it will be close to the place of business and the shops, next to the 2 photo models next door, and where a massive increase in salary awaits.

That suddenly seems acceptable, does’nt it!

Well, Rugby-Talk is soon going to move house, but we are going to keep our name (www.rugby-talk.com), we will keep our unique Identity and status in Cyberspace and amongst the search engines…. but we also have to move our worldly possessions (Content Database and Archives). In this process we have to change our physical Electronic Addresses (Name Servers) and unpack our Content Database at the new Address (web host), where we have to see to the new connection of the water and lights (web host subscription and Domain Registration Transfer).

It is going to be trauatic, it is going to be hard work, and above all it’ going to take time.

Basically, what I’m saying is, we should be off-air as a web site for maybe in the vascinity of 4 whole days, whereafter we can resume as normal, but with speed to burn, and most, if not all our recent frustrations a thing of the past.

It would have been much easier if we did not find it necessary to keep our web address, but changed it to something else… but we do not want to do that, do we?

Let me give you the basic steps in this process:

  1. We Register at the New Web Host, for the business package already selected and pay in advance a full year’s subscription.
  2. We make a FULL backup of our web site… the SQL Database as well as all files and folders (I’ve whittled it down from almost 10Gb to 370Mb already).
  3. We Restore the Database and files and Folders at the New Web Host.
  4. We remove our Database and Files at the Old Web Host and replace it with a Static Web page image, which basically says that we will be off-line for a few days.
  5. We Change the Name Servers to reflect the new DNS (Dynamic Naming Solution) Name Servers at the New Web Host.
  6. We Instruct and effect the Transfer of the Domain Registration to the New Web Host (It is called the process of Propagation)…. which takes up to 96 HOURS. There is NO SHORTCUT for this.
  7. We Re-configure our Mail Addresses, set our Mail Forwarders, and Test every detail of the transfer.

The usual figure a web host will give you to transfer a web site, with all it’s contents AND effect a Domain Registration Transfer, is 7 to 10 days, but with the fact that we’ll make our own content backups and restore our own content at the New Web Host, the only unavoidable delay will be the process of Propagation of the web site, under the same web address, at the New Web Host, which is estimated to be up to 96 HOURS. This is the same between any and every host… it is the Red Tape which accompanies EVERY Transfer of a Domain Registration to any new host.

Take Note:

On Wednesday, 24 August 2011 late in the afternoon, I plan to kick off with this whole process, so it is likely that Rugby-Talk will be off-line, from sometime on 24 August till possibly as late as 28 August, but it could well be that we are off-line for less than 72 hours.

The Static Web Page which will display whils the Transfer and Web Site Propagation takes place, will look like this:

Bear with us during the move, understand my short temper during that period and the trauma I’ll be going through… and putting you through!

Come on, give me your blessing and the thumbs up… tell me how you feel about this in the comments section below!

Regards,

There will be a static Page up, while the Propagation takes place, with a Counter, which should guide you, I will place a Picture of the Static Page on here in a little while, so you can see what to expect. The Propagation period could be shorter than the 96 hours expected… so type in the usual web address every so often… to see if we’re up and running.

Tomorrow is D-Day, where a Full Backup is made with comments and Articles and all Pages (as updated) to that time frame… looks like I will only start in the Afternoon late tomorrow, so till then we’re here and running… or crawling…

    7@ Ashley:
Ons gee jou darem kennis….. hehehe

Will be good to see how the new improved site performs.

  • 11

Looking forward to the new site. Right now this one is far too slow.

Hard work gbs, but it will be worth it. I personally think more bloggers will register if the this site works faster, or some old bloggers could come back. I would blog here more often if it was faster. It has been frustrating trying to log on and especially submitting post takes forever. So bring it on the new site…hehe.

Will we have improved smiley faces? These ones here look like a orange blob?…hehe. Also would be nice to have the posters number next to the post you answer too. Not a major problem if we don’t have it, just makes it easier to see who we answering back too.

Will our world cup song still show? Hope so. Only we have it and that is great.

I will just blog at the usual places. keo and sharksworld. Read ruggaworld from time to time. Seems a really nice rugby site that.

Good luck and all the best for a brand new faster site.. 🙂

    11@ Puma:
It will still be the Old Site, same web address… just at a new place, where we will have speed!

The COMMENT NUMBER has never been gone…. it is here, on the right hand side, where it has always been, how else would I know you left COMMENT No 11.

The Anthem and our regular pictures and Adverts will be put up, soon as speed is not an issue.

The SMILEYS… eishhhh, maybe once we have speed to burn we can expand on them, but first priorities first… the Migration and speed, then after that the sky is the limit.

@ grootblousmile:gbs, Jeez I can’t wait for you to get this site right. Just posted a long post on the thread with the squad from NZ. It must be in cyberspace cause I don’t see it here. After submitting all I got was ‘Error this page can’t be displayed’ Then have to log back in here. Very frustrating. It takes me forever to type as well…hehe. Will go back there and do a short post this time.

I know the number is next to the post we comment too. But it would be nice to just click on the arrow and THAT number from the post we answering too, just appears next to the post when we submit. Instead of having to type the number ourselves.

Now hope this post goes through.

    13 @ Puma:
    Yes it’s frustrating!

I initially wanted to do the Migration at the end of the month, when I should have some time… but it has pissed me off so much that I have decided to dothe whole thing as from tomorrow late afternoon… the sooner it gets done the better.

  • 15

GBS…not that you need it, but you have my blessing. A faster site will be a blessing. I will try and remember not to complain until after the 28th….but don’t promise anything…..I have been known to forget things. 😉

  • 16

@ grootblousmile:14 – I think it is worth it boeta. Think we will get some of the old bloggers back too.

I always come here and look first everyday. Just have had hassles getting logged on and when submitting get that ‘Error can’t display page’ then I just head off to either keo or sw. So once this site is working proper will be great to be back here to blog more.

Anyhow will log off now and be back tonight when our squad is announced. Doubt we will see surprises only Flo might be a surprise, the rest I think we all sort of know will be there.

    Cheers catch up later.

  • 17

@ grootblousmile:14 – Before I go, once our faster site is up and running. Send out mails to all the old bloggers. Try and get some of the kiwis that blogged here too. Would be nice for the wc. I always enjoyed Irish Devil here too. I know he is busy now days, but for the wc would be nice to see some old bloggers back here.

    What happened to Rugby Princess?

    Okay back later.

  • 18

    17@ Puma:
I will some or other Mass Mailer to bloggers… once done with this.

We’re now talking step 15, in my order of priorities here… hehe

  • 19

    15@ 4man:
Yes, I suppose I don’t need permission, but we’re a tightly knit community… and keeping you guys informed is the right thing to do.

  • 20

Fark, I have to go out for dinner… a birthday in the family. Os, the daughter, BonzaiHandbriekie’s boyfriend’s birthday…. eishhh

Will miss the Bokke squad announcement.

  • 21

    Expect some surprises.

Deysel/Mvovo back with the Sharks today. Johnson selected for the Cheetahs this week. Feel for these players especially Deysel and Johnson. They should have got selection.

Think Flo has leaped frogged some players here. Shame that acutally. Also read that Kolisi just may be a surprise selection. Not sure but read it.

Back later after they announce the Bok Squad.

  • 22

    @ Puma:meant = actually

  • 23

Sabc news. Confirm that Lambie and Fransie in the Bok Squad. Then we all knew that. So is this gonna be live or what?

  • 24

Good luck GBS. Moenie terug hou nie

  • 25

    24@ bluepete:
Dankie bloupiet… ek sallie terughou nie, dit kan jy van seker wees!
