Frans Steyn is set to rejoin the Springboks for this year’s TriNations and the Rugby World cup after playing for Top 14 club Racing Metro.

Steyn’s Racing Metro will contest the Top 14 Semi-finals this weekend and the Springbok appears set to return to South Africa once the club’s tournament is over.

South African Rugby Teams manager Andy Marinos travelled to France to discuss Steyn’s return with Racing Metro and told website Keo that the Bok will return to SA soon.

“We went over to have a chat with Pierre Berbizier and Simon Mannix (Racing’s head and assistant coaches) about Frans and his game at the moment,” Marinos told Independent Newspapers.

“The fact is Frans is coming back and he will play for us provided his form is good and he’s injury-free.’

“We can’t ignore the fact that Frans is a mercurial player and a unique talent,” said Marinos.

“He’ll have the Tri-Nations to get up to speed with the Boks.”

Steyn is expected to play for the Springboks at fullback but according to reports   he has played for 2 000 minutes (equivalent of 25, 80-minute matches) for his   French club so SARU are expected to give him four weeks rest after his French   club commitments are complete.

The TriNations starts for the Springboks on July the 23rd when they face the Wallabies.

Sources close to the Springboks say that coach Peter de Villiers will follow former coach Jake White’s model for the TriNations in World cup year by playing his first choice players at home and touring with second stringers

    Say NO to Zane!

ek stem loosehead, Zane is not bad but we have better in SA. I have been saying for a wwhile now that Jacque Fourie must play fullback. Just imagine with his pace and skills and he can join the line at any time on attack and i cant think of anybody i will trust more to run from the back if need be.

I don’t know what the current facination is with Fransie Steyn!

Till he’s not back on a permanent basis at a SA Franchise AND has regained his best form (at No 15 or No 12), there is no guarantee for the state of his form. Getting form back whilst contesting the Tri-Nations, if he indeed manages to get form back, is a slap in the face of Riaan Viljoen, Louis Ludik, Jaco Taute & Zane Kirchner.

At the same time it serves as an open invitation to Bokke incumbants to seek money offers overseas, banking on the fact that they will just easily be recalled for the Bokke on a whim.

I am dead set against the idea.

    @ Durban Bulle:
If memory serves, he has been tried there to not great success. I think that he can’t kick………….

We have better who at least deserve the chance.

    4@ Loosehead:
Jaque Fourie has played for the Bokke at Fullback… if memory serves he was fullback for the one Test against New Zealand in Rustenburg… the one where a young Pierre Spies won the Man of the Match award. I think we won that one by 1 point or something like that…. 19 / 18 rings a bell, but I can be mistaken.

He is a very solid fullback… and if memory serves me further I think he played a lot of fullback at schools level.

I was wrong with the score… it was Springboks 21 / 20 All Blacks, 2 September 2006, a week after the Bokke had lost to the All Blacks at Loftus by 26 / 45 and a week before the Bokke played against Ozzie at Ellispark and we won 24 / 16.

Here’s a pic of the squad names as well as a team photo, for that day.

I still think that Pierre Spies should play center because he is more effective in open play, rather than close quarters. Especially if someone like Jaque moves to fullback.

I see no problem with frans steyn being back in the fold. But then again my auntie is a better bet than Zane.

My auntie kick starts Boeings A380 for exercise
    She plays for McDonalds.

I think she was actually my uncle, until a grenade went off between her legs when she was in the army.

Best choice for the position. But I am troubled by players coming back to claim a spot. I think Ludick should play the away legs, he played well in the Transvaal for a well beaten team and he has excelled for the Sharks, also good under the high ball. Whats his kicking like (for posts?)does anyone know?
