Bulls supporters and their enemies really climbed into the Super 14 Champion side after their humiliating defeat against the Crusaders since Saturday. The question immediately arises whether they can be back to winning ways again if  Frans Ludeke decides to stick with this poor performing team? Can they play a lot better and record a win against the high-flying Reds?

Let us have a look at the team:

Backs:

15 Zane Kirchner: He played well and deserves his place, possible replacements would be Jaco vd Westhuisen and maybe Francois Brummer.  Francois Brummer at full back will signal panic so i can not see that option being taken.

14 Francois Hougaard: Re-deploy him at no 9. Give Gerhard vd Heever his place back.

13 Jaco Pretorius: I personally dont see him doing anything in the team. JJ Harmse wrote an article in Beeld with very interesting statistics about the Bulls on Saturday. Jaco according to the stats from “ruggastats” hadto make 16 tackles and he did not miss one, he also made 2 turnovers and broke the advantage line 4 times. He spoiled it a bit with 2 knock-on’s. I would change him with Stephan Dippenaar.

12 Wynand Olivier: According to ruggastats (RS), Wynand had to make 11 tackles, missed 2, he carried the ball 8 times broke the line 3 times and gained 98 meters. That sounds good, until you see the replay of the Sonny Bill Williams try and remember the 2 very poor knock-on’s. I wont change him , just change his role from crash ball runner to distributor.

11 Bjorn Basson: He did his job, no change.

10 Morné Steyn: No change amongst current Bulls player ranks will improve the team here. Possible changes Francois Brummer or Jaco vd Westhuisen. I would vary his instruction not to kick every ball.

9 Fourie du Preez: He needs a rest, not only for physical fatigue but he lost a bit of perspective. Also his attitude with the referees is costing his team, referees do not want players to tell them the whole time they are blind. I would like to see him on the bench with Francois Hougaard starting.

Forwards:

8 Pierre Spies: Replace him  with Danie Rossouw. Let him come back as impact player, everyone in SA wants it except Frans Ludeke. Spies made the most tackles according to (RS), he made 19 but he missed 4 and thats what he will be remembered for. The most vital one was when he could not stop Israel Dagg. His tackle technique is suspect, he does not bring his opponent down but rather tries to hold the player in the air. Is he doing it under instruction? It seems so, otherwise he would have been dropped long ago for that alone.

7 Dewald Potgieter: Make him captain for this match.

6 Deon Stegmann: What happened to Derick Kuun? I would move Stegmann to the bench and play Kuun. Is Juandre Kruger on tour?

5 Victor Matfield (C): Move him to the bench to rest and only send him on if absolutely necessary. He needs a break, take it out of his hands and drop him for this game. Possible replacements Flip vd Merwe or Juandre Kruger if available.

4 Bakkies Botha: Play him the full 80 minutes, he needs that. He is trying to pack in 80 minutes of rugby in 50 minutes.

3 Werner Kruger: No change

2 Gary Botha: No change

1 Dean Greyling: No change

If these changes are made it will be almost the same match 22 that lost to the Crusaders. But with a totally new match captain we might focus on the ball and not on the Referee. If someone tells me we cannot change the captaincy it will be a very sad day in Bulls rugby, one player must not get bigger than the team.

If Francios Hougaart plays scrumhalf he must be allowed to play his own natural game. Forget all the up and under’s , all the traffic directing and pods.

This revised Bulls team CAN do it for us.

Have a look at the following Statistics , quite interesting. http://www.rugby-talk.com/?page_id=27492

Were the Bulls really that bad? I will have to wait for the replay on DSTV.

    @ Loosehead@1:
The bulls was “dubbel K senter A”. Couldn’t hold onto the ball even if you offer them a million bucks. They were horrible; no heart; gutless; one dimentional with contact skills of a u/10 c-team.

    @ McLook:
Geez, maybe I shouldn’t watch the game.

“We’ve learnt through previous years that we cannot give any excuses for our performance. We aren’t happy and we know that it was not good enough. But we are looking forward to our next game against the Reds,” an optimistic Ludeke said from Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold coast.

    Surfer’s Paradise ?

    Beach Boys ?

    http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/union-news/paint-your-bandwagon-red-queensland-can-help-wallabies-kickon-to-world-cup-success-20110411-1db6g.html

    In een sin:

“It’s been a long time since South African teams lost both the kicking duels and the physical collisions to their Australian and New Zealand counterparts. Peter de Villiers, you’re going to have to pull off a miracle.”

I don’t think there is that much wrong with the team as such…the problem is mainly attitude and tactics! This is basically the same team that won the competition last year.

I’m starting to wonder if the contracted Boks just have eyes for the WC and are too afraid to get injured.

    BULLS TEAM FOR REDS

Ludeke said this will be the most important match of the season for the Bulls. “We will have to get points here and get back on track in order to stay in touch with the log leading teams,” Ludeke said.

The team to play the Reds (with Super caps) is: Zane Kirchner (46), Gerhard van den Heever (23), Stephan Dippenaar (15), Wynand Olivier (78), Bjorn Basson (16), Morné Steyn (80), Francois Hougaard (20), Pierre Spies (63), Dewald Potgieter (38), Derick Kuün (63), Victor Matfield (116, c), Bakkies Botha (92), Werner Kruger (49), Chiliboy Ralepelle (26), Dean Greyling (6).

Replacements: Gary Botha (78), Rossouw de Klerk (5), Danie Rossouw (107), Deon Stegmann (46), Fourie du Preez (106), Francois Brummer (3), Akona Ndungane (64).

    @ superBul:
Almost my team, i thought about giving Chiliboy a run but chickened out. I thought it would give you guys too much ammunition to wipe my team of the table. Coward.

And then Victor Matfield. I must have been dreaming to expect FL to drop Jaco and Victor.

  • 11

    9@ superBul:

  • 13

    @ grootblousmile:

Waarom hulle hom as battering ram gebruik weet nugter, is hy nou “Conan the Barbarian” in FL se oe. Speel hom soms so los soos Kankowski , hy is baie beter as hy, dan kan mens sien of sy tyd verby is.

  • 14

O OK FL was nie braaf met Jaco nie, Flip van der Merwe and Jaco Pretorius picked up injuries in the Timaru clash and will not be considered for the Brisbane match.

  • 15

    12@ superBul:

  • 18

    @ grootblousmile:

  • 20

Hi Super et al, juandre is not on tour but played Vodacom for Bulls last Friday night vs Border.

Groente uit Benoni (I kid you not!). Work can take you to strange places… 😉

  • 21

    20@ fender:
Jy is skaars so paar klip gooie van my af, “Die Panne” is reg langs (aangrensend) aan Ben-Oni (Seun van Oni). Waar hang jy uit in Benoni, mag dalk net kom kyk hoe tokkel jy ‘n kitaartjie en vir jou ‘n biertjie koop?

  • 22

  • 24

    @ superBul:
Forget about super 12….get the right players rested and lets really test the newcomers for the Boks at Super Rugby level.

  • 25

I reiterate my comment last year. Australia are building to peak for the world cup. If NZ chokes (quite possible) The Aussies will be there or thereabouts.
If we do not change certain players and the game plan, we’ll get to the Semi’s thats it.

  • 26

    @ 4man:
We are not building , we are demolishing what was left of a great team that could have won 2 WC. Sad but the non belief in certain players will either have a brand new team or the old one with no supporters.

There is hope if we play to OUR game plan , but only if we do it the RIGHT way.

  • 27

Whatever they do it cannot be more of the same. Else it will be more of the same.

  • 28

    @ superBul:

Imagine being Dewalt Potigter (sorry about the spelling, some of these names have to be seen to be believed)………..Anyway imagine being him and the coach saying Ok Dewalt, we have had a run of bad luck and I want Victor to rest up this week and I want you to be skipper”.!!

The pressure, what on earth would you say to your team in this position to fire them up and get the very best out of them?

  • 29

I would probably say… “Guys, if you don’t pull your fingers out, I will nominate Bakkies to be Captain next week”!!

  • 30

    @ Blue Bird:
BB you must read his articles on Supersport, he is a mature young man, he is losing a lot of exposure with this Victor is all attitude by the Bulls. He and Ralepele was earmarked as leaders a long time ago.

The problem with too much success is you dont want to try too much in fear of losing games. But you Must blend these guys in, and this game was a great chance. The fans are upset and we wanted this, so if it fails who do you blame? Both monkeys of your back, or a great experiment that worked.
