Coach John Plumtree has named a strong sharks team to play the Lions, although there are a few surprises, that will be due to some niggles players picked up.

January 2011 (16:21) – Sharks Coach John Plumtree has named a strong starting line-up for Tuesday evening’s Neo Africa Tri-Series warm-up match against the Lions in Cape Town.

John Smit will captain the side from hooker to form an all-Springbok front row with Tendai Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis either side of him. With Steven Sykes sporting an injury, Ross Skeate, himself over a groin injury sustained during the Absa Currie Cup tournament last year, will partner Alistair Hargreaves in the second row.

Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts and Ryan Kankowski present a formidible loose-forward combination. “I wanted a little bit of contact before we went down to Cape Town,” Plumtree explained of last Tuesday night’s run against The Sharks XV side – a physically intense match that did have it’s victims, “and we did pick up a couple of knocks which is understandable. Steven Sykes didn’t travel due to a calf muscle strain and Keegan Daniel has a slight back injury. I’m not playing anyone carrying any injuries.”

The halfback duo of recently-capped Springboks Charl McLeod and Patrick Lambie is re-united after a much-hyped demonstration over the course of the successful Currie Cup in 2010 while Stefan Terblanche, at outside centre, has a new partner in Meyer Bosman, the off-season signing from the Free State last year who will wear the number 12 jersey.

The back three of JP Pietersen, Odwa Ndungane and Louis Ludik offer a mix of stability and excitement.

With thirteen players named on the bench, there is room to test combinations as well as give some new players an opportunity, notably Daniel Adonga (pictured), Conrad Hoffmann, Jacques–Louis Potgieter, Jacques Engelbrecht and Mark Richards.

Question for J-LP: Would you rather get splinters in your arse in Pretoria, or actually play the game in Bloem?

    @ Loosehead:
I should have included Deben in the question.

So this side leaked 40 points against the Lions.

Can we read anything into the score, or is it just a pre-season “warm up” where the coaches don’t really give a monkey’s uncle about the result.

At least publicly, but we all know that no coach like to lose any game.
