So many wants South Africa to play their young players this Saturday. Everyone peppers the coach to play this and that player. What will Peter do on Saturday?Who do you think must get a chance? Last night on Kyknet Kobus Wiese and his panel phoned Peter and asked him a few questions.

What Peter said is that he and the selectors will meet after the interview in the hotel and discus the team. Peter said he wont make many changes, for him this win is very important. He also wants to build continuity. I expect at most 3 changes. One is forced by the injury/suspension of Bjon Basson. The other forced one will be on the bench with the suspension of Rallepele.

The Rallepele suspension means that Bismarck du Plessis will not get the deserved rest he needs. Rallepele was earmarked to start against Scotland. Bismarck  must be on the bench with Adriaan Strauss playing against Scotland. But dont count on it.

When asked about Francios Hougaart it seems there is a big chance that he might get a start. Remember Peter is not the only selector.  But i would predict that our backline will show 3 changes. At number 9, 14 and 12/13.

The backs could be F Hougaart, M Steyn, B Habanna, F Steyn , P Lambie, L Mvovo and G Aplon.  Morne Steyn need more game time and less rest. He must be played back in the groove, we can not go the Aussie route and play tests without a reliable points machine. Remember the near disaster against the British and Irish Lions last year. The Habana issue, well  reading the papers this morning, Peter de Villiers says he is just one try away from his normal self.

That last statement is disturbing, how can a 65 test veteran be so impatient to force the record issue? It is really disappointing to see him struggle past this milestone.  His last try was against Italy, since that try he was unsuccessful in 8 tests to cross the tryline. In a more settled Springbok backline there might be place for Habana to hide until his form comes back but being a senior player this current display by him is disappointing and unacceptable to say the least.

The center pairing did not work on Saturday. Do you give them another chance to find each other or be brave and change it. Jean de Villiers might be rested and Frans Steyn moved to his more familiar number 12 position. That will leave the 13 jersey open. The choice there will be between Pat Lambie and Zane Kirchner. I would put both in the match 22 for Saturday.

Forwards

Front row is working great and i think they might have to play another week or two. To rest one of them will not be a disaster, but trying a whole new front row will be risky. Expect the same with substitutions early in the second half. Locks , i can not see Victor being rested, maybe we can see Bakkies Botha and Flip vd Merwe swapping places.

Willem Alberts might start with Stegman moving to the bench. But playing without Stegman and Bismarck will be risky.

Do not expect too many changes for Saturday, this Grand Slam means a lot to the Springboks. We must also watch our greatest opponents moves and learn a bit from them. The All Blacks are trying their best to build their team now. They are determined to prevent the same mistakes they made in 2007.

A last word about last nights program and the chat with Peter de Villiers, he sounds much better in his own language Afrikaans. I was impressed by his calmness. He and the team is in shock about the doping suspensions.

Dis nou as hy hom sou kies…

Super, You why play Lambie at outside centre? No man, then we just messing the youngster about well and true.

My Team for Scotland would be:

    1 Coenie
    2 Strauss
    3 CJ
4 Bakkies. Bakkies has had enough rest so he can play.
    5 Hargreaves
    6 Keegan
    7 Juan (capt)
    8 Alberts.

    9 Hougaard
    10 Lambie

    13 not sure
    14 Aplon
    15 Zane

Some of the heavy weights for the bench for if we need them. Otherwise this is a very good time to rest some of our top players for the England game. We need them fresh.

  • 8

@ Puma: 6 – Just a thought there. Put JdV at inside centre. He never played S14 so wont be as tired as the rest.

Frans Steyn at FB and give Zane another chance at outside centre.

  • 9

@ Puma:6 – Actually just had another thought about my selection there. Rather don’t mess with our centre pairing. They need to gel before the England game, but I would play Fransie at 12 and JdV at outside centre. The play Zane at FB.

Hello OldG, How you doing mate? See you up there.

  • 11

Can’t see how Kirchner got the nod to even come on this tour. Had Zane been at FB this weekend, the Grand Slam tour would be over, leave Aplon where he is, he hasn’t put a foot wrong thus far, if you have to put Crazy Hair Kirchner in teh team, pick him at wing.

In anycase, yes, Habana was playing poorly, but please, look at the rest of the backline, Steyn is obviously not giving De Villiers any go-ahead ball, Frans Steyn is only a quota, and Pienaar is kicking away 60% of all possession, how are the other players, read De Villiers, Habana, Basson/Mvovo and Aplon supposed to make a difference?

Only change Lambie and Hougaard for this weeks game, and you’ll be in the midst of a whole new ballgame.

    #12

Stegmann has proven NOTHING on this tour so far…FLO, Botes, Minnie, and even that chap from the PUMAS are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, all have had better seasons, Hargreaves will never amount to anything and Kirchner is a quota..

  • 15

My team for the game would be (considering who is on tour and respecting Scotland enough):

    15. Zane Kirchner (with clear instructions not to kick as many up-and-unders)
    14. Gio Aplon
    13. Frans Steyn
    12. Jean de Villiers
    11. Lwazi Mvovo
    10. Patrick Lambie (with Elton Jantjies on the bench as cover for bad kicking to posts, rest Morné for this game)
    9. Francois Hougaard (with instructions not to kick as many box kicks as Ruan and to play his natural game, Ruan Pienaar on the bench)
    8. Willem Alberts (rest Spies)
    7. Juan Smith
    6. Deon Stegmann (we need a fetcher and balance in the loosies, Keegan Daniel on the bench)
    5. Victor Matfield (Captain)
    4. Flip van der Merwe (Bakkies on the bench)
    3. Jannie du Plessis
    2. Bismarck du Plessis (Adriaan Strauss on the bench)
    1. Beast Mtawarira (Coenie Oosthuizen on the bench)

Scotland got a snotklap from the All Blacks but are better than we think, respect them enough!

    11@ The Saint:
    Old WP-eenoog…

Kirchner’s positional play at fullback is better than Gio’s positional play at fullback…. please tell me you saw Gio out of position a few times.

Gio is good on the right wing, tackles well when at wing.

    13@ The Saint:
Habana has been SHOCKING DELUXE…. but he plays for WP…. oh, I see…. hahaha

  • 17
