The selectors on Saturday named six uncapped players in a Springbok squad of 30 for their five-match tour of Britain and Ireland next month.

SA Rugby

SA Under-20 stars Elton Jantjies (flyhalf) and Patrick Lambie (flyhalf/fullback) were promoted to the senior squad after highly impressive debut seasons, while The Sharks trio of wing Lwazi Mvovo and backrowers Willem Alberts and Keegan Daniel as well as dynamic Vodacom Cheetahs loosehead prop Coenie Oosthuizen were also called up to a Springbok squad for the first time.

Two overseas-based players were named in the party in Ulster’s Ruan Pineaar – who will join the squad in Johannesburg on Sunday – and Frans Steyn (of Racing Metro in France), who will be available following the opening Test against Ireland. The tour will be led by Vodacom Blue Bulls captain Victor Matfield, with Juan Smith of the Vodacom Cheetahs as vice-captain.

“We’ve rewarded players for their form in what was a difficult selection as there were a number of others who were part of our preliminary squad who were very close to selection,” said Peter de Villiers, Springbok coach.

“But we looked at the players who were performing now in our selection criteria as we need to be on top form from the first kick-off in Ireland.

“It’s a new-look squad but it has a good backbone of experience for what is going to be a challenging tour.”

Players not considered for selection because of injury were John Smit, Jaque Fourie, Wynand Olivier, Andries Bekker, Fourie du Preez, Heinrich Brüssow, JP Pietersen, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Butch James and BJ Botha.

“We have the advantage that a number of players such as Juan Smith, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira, Bakkies Botha and Ricky Januarie have not had a lot of rugby this season for one reason or another,” said De Villiers. “When you add that to the number of absentees through injury it means that there are only a few players on tour whose volume of work we will need to manage and this squad gives us options to do that.

“We needed strong on-field leadership because of the absence of a number of those key players which is why it was critical for us that Victor should lead the squad,” said De Villiers.

The Springboks’ fixtures are:

November 6 v Ireland (Dublin)
November 13 v Wales (Cardiff)
November 20 v Scotland (Edinburgh)
November 27 v England (Twickenham)
December 4 v Barbarians (Twickenham)

No 15: No specialist chosen with Zane & Daniller shunned… Fransie Steyn, Lambie & Aplon will have to fill the role

    No 14: Only Gio Aplon

No 12 & 13: Jean de Villiers & Juan de Jong… to be helped by Fransie Steyn

No 11: Bryan Habana, Bjorn Basson, Lwazi Mvovo

No 10: Morné Steyn, Patrick Lambie, Elton Jantjies

No 9: Francois Hougaard, Ricky Januarie, Ruan Pienaar

No 8: Spies, Kankowski, Willem Alberts

No 7: Juan Smith, Willem Alberts

No 6: Schalk Burger, Keegan Daniel

No 5: Victor Matfield, Alistair Hargreaves

No 4: Bakkies Botha & Flip van der Merwe

No 3: Jannie du Plessis, CJ Van der Linde

No 2: Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Chiliboy Ralepelle

No 1: Tendai (Beast) Mtawarira, Coenie Oosthuizen

So, we’re light on fullback, right wing, centres…..

Really pleased to see Keegan Daniel get selected. He has been outstanding this CC and deserved that call up.

Well done to all the new comers too. Lambie, Jantjies, Mvovo, Alberts, Basson and Oosthuizen.

Think it is a good squad. Some were unlucky not to make it though, but only space for so many I suppose.

  • 13

So if De Jongh and Januarie are injured wonder who will take their place?

  • 14

    @ Puma:
McCloud could have made it but he was injured too

  • 15

Well, now we must unite as a nation behind our squad… leave the Provincial rivalries be.. and focus together.

I’ll do that, despite the fact that I do not think much of our coaching triamverate of Snorman, Tricky Dicky and Gary Glitter….

    Go Bokke!

Ireland is the 1st hurdle… a mountain to climb in it’s own right!

  • 16

@ superBul:14 – Super, I really felt for McCloud. He has been playing some great rugby and thought he would have made it too. Pity. Now if Ricky is injured not sure who will get selected to tour.

  • 17

It’ll all become clear in the next 2 days, who is or is’nt injured or available.

  • 18

@ grootblousmile:15 – As from this minute we are all one. Provincial rivalry will be put to sleep until S15.

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOKKE

Going to be a very, very tough tour this.

  • 19

OK folks… have a wonderful evening…. GBS signing out.

    20@ bdb:

  • 25

23: ja, was lekker ontspanne. Ek sukkel om te besluit wat die hoogtepunt was: Aussies of Sharks se wen ? 😉

  • 26

24: hy is bietjie kort Windhoek, sal hom op buitesenter of vleuel oorweeg. Probeer liewers vir Van der Heever op heelagter, hy is lekker lank, veilige hande, goeie skopvoet, spoed, dink hy sal goed doen.

  • 27

    @ bdb:
    25
Jis ja albei was great. Ek is net bly die twee windties het mooi hul ente gesien. Dit was nou n dag waar ons Bulle met lee hande heel gelukkig huis toe gaan. 😆

  • 28

    @ bdb:

Ja buitesenter sal ek ook graag wil sien

  • 29

27: lyk my die WP is besig om die chokers tag oor te vat by die Sharks.

28: FDP MS Basson WO FH VDH Zane
