The selectors on Saturday named six uncapped players in a Springbok squad of 30 for their five-match tour of Britain and Ireland next month.

SA Rugby

SA Under-20 stars Elton Jantjies (flyhalf) and Patrick Lambie (flyhalf/fullback) were promoted to the senior squad after highly impressive debut seasons, while The Sharks trio of wing Lwazi Mvovo and backrowers Willem Alberts and Keegan Daniel as well as dynamic Vodacom Cheetahs loosehead prop Coenie Oosthuizen were also called up to a Springbok squad for the first time.

Two overseas-based players were named in the party in Ulster’s Ruan Pineaar – who will join the squad in Johannesburg on Sunday – and Frans Steyn (of Racing Metro in France), who will be available following the opening Test against Ireland. The tour will be led by Vodacom Blue Bulls captain Victor Matfield, with Juan Smith of the Vodacom Cheetahs as vice-captain.

“We’ve rewarded players for their form in what was a difficult selection as there were a number of others who were part of our preliminary squad who were very close to selection,” said Peter de Villiers, Springbok coach.

“But we looked at the players who were performing now in our selection criteria as we need to be on top form from the first kick-off in Ireland.

“It’s a new-look squad but it has a good backbone of experience for what is going to be a challenging tour.”

Players not considered for selection because of injury were John Smit, Jaque Fourie, Wynand Olivier, Andries Bekker, Fourie du Preez, Heinrich Brüssow, JP Pietersen, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Butch James and BJ Botha.

“We have the advantage that a number of players such as Juan Smith, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira, Bakkies Botha and Ricky Januarie have not had a lot of rugby this season for one reason or another,” said De Villiers. “When you add that to the number of absentees through injury it means that there are only a few players on tour whose volume of work we will need to manage and this squad gives us options to do that.

“We needed strong on-field leadership because of the absence of a number of those key players which is why it was critical for us that Victor should lead the squad,” said De Villiers.

The Springboks’ fixtures are:

November 6 v Ireland (Dublin)
November 13 v Wales (Cardiff)
November 20 v Scotland (Edinburgh)
November 27 v England (Twickenham)
December 4 v Barbarians (Twickenham)

    @ bdb:
Bulle het vir my soms stupid ge eksperimenteer.

Durban – Western Province coach Allister Coetzee and skipper Schalk Burger agreed that handling errors put paid to any chance their side may have had of winning the 2010 Currie Cup final against the Sharks in Durban on Saturday evening.

The Sharks’ matchwinning scoreline of 30-10 suggests the winners were three times better than Province and, judging by the post-match sentiments of Burger and Coetzee, they must have felt that way.

“I am very disappointed with the loss but we must give credit to Sharks,” said Coetzee.

“We did not keep ball in hand, made lots of mistakes and that really cost us.

“It was about kick execution and the Sharks have a great counter attack ability. They were much better than we were on the day.

    36: klaar s14 gewen, volgende jaar is S15 !

  • 39

    @ bdb:

  • 42

Ja bly in Whk en is ‘n bul supporter (daar in Pretoria gebore, maar kleintyd getrek)

Scrumhalf Ricky Januarie has been withdrawn from the Springbok end-of-year tour squad after sustaining an injury during Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup final in Durban.

The Vodacom Western Province player suffered an injury to a knee during the first half of the match. He was examined by Springbok team doctor, Dr Craig Roberts, following the final and the injury was assessed as being serious enough to mean that he would be unfit to take any part in the tour.

No replacement has been named as yet. The medical team will assess the extent of any other injuries once the squad assembles in Johannesburg.

One can only laugh at some news headlines,
    Lambie bursts Province’s bubble

Patrick Lambie produced a performance of epic proportions to help the Sharks to a well-deserved 30-10 win over Western Province in the Currie Cup Final in Durban on Saturday.

Experienced centre Adi Jacobs has been drafted into the Springbok camp as a precaution because of injury concerns over Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh.

Jacobs joins the squad in Johannesburg on Sunday and a decision on whether he will formally be added to the tour squad will be taken following further medical assessments.

The Vodacom Western Province pair of De Villiers and De Jongh both suffered injuries in the Absa Currie Cup final on Saturday. De Jongh was replaced during the match because of an ankle injury while De Villiers was able to complete the match despite a groin problem.

Springbok centres Jaque Fourie and Wynand Olivier were not available for selection because of injury. Jacobs, who was part of the preliminary tour squad, has been recalled as a precaution.

“We will monitor Juan and Jean’s progress in the next couple of days,” said Peter de Villiers, Springbok coach. “We have had a number of injuries among our senior centres so we decided it was essential to have some experienced cover on hand and in the group just in case.”

Jacobs, 30, missed the 2010 international season because of injury but it back to full fitness. He played the last of his 30 tests against Italy in November last year.

Ek dink baie gaan nou skree wat van Doppies en Andries Strauss maar Peter het nog altyd met Adri gewerk. So kom ons hoop maar die beserings is nie ernstig nie.

  • 56

Span lyk ongebalanseerd, 4 losskakels, twee senters en twee skrumkakels (as jy Ruan as skrummie byreken)….
