“We have a policy at Loftus and if there are any banners that are political, racial, religious or cultural, we take those banners away,” said Loftus Versfeld stadium manager Hugo Kemp.

According to Sport 24’s article yesterday, this is in fact NOT what Loftus management did. They in fact removed the culprits who were sodomizing Loftus with a request to ABSA to select players on merit.

Strange that such a request is frowned upon.  It begs the question, why Loftus did not stick to their policy and simply took away the offensive banners rather than chasing the members of public away. Yes, it could just as well have been ordinary citizens, as I assume one size fits all.

I wonder what other banners will be disallowed by Loftus?

What about these?

Cultural banner, motivated by Luke Watson’s political statement. Loftus Versfeld March 2009

The Home of 50000 dutchmen. Does Loftus Versfeld condone Loftus being only for “Dutchmen”? The people were not escorted off Loftus, nor was the banner removed.

Afriforum protesting against the name of Tshwane instead of Pretoria. Loftus condoned this Political and cultural banner.

Although at Kingspark in 2007, and Orlando Stadium in 2009, the question needs to be asked: Will Jaco be escorted off the field if he dares wear this religious banner on Loftus Versfeld? If Loftus is to apply the policy fairly and accross the board, then Jaco will not be allowed to wear or display this shirt anymore.
What about this guy? Banned from Loftus?

Or this shirt.Do not wear this at Loftus, its cultural!!

I often see these shirts around. Be warned ANC  supporters!!

Maybe wear this one to Loftus to let the Management know what you think of them?

Absa, please select teams on Merit….Now that is one offensive statement, isn’t it?

I think way too much got made of the ABSA SMS. I don’t have the exact content on front of me but I do remember the explicit meaning.

Lets face it, rugby has not done well in developing new black talent. The numbers in the Currie Cup teams bear this out.

Saying that does *not* mean I support quotas or any non-merit selections at the higher levels of rugby. Because I don’t
The reasons for this failure to develop talent are many and I cannot (and neither can any of you) proportion blame.

Lets just say that the unions, franchises, SARU and government are not squeaky clean.

What is upsetting people is the meaning they are inferring from the ABSA sms.
Lets look at the real meaning of the sentence and not the meaning we want to guess at.

As for this banner thingy, that is a tough one. I find banners that have a mild form of protest but also attempt to be light hearted and humorous great.
Racist banners, purely party political ones not acceptable.

The tricky one is when someone has a crack at the sponsors.
Its a difficult one. Biting the hand that feeds you versus free speech.

    @ Biscuit:

This article touches not on racial quoatas in SA rugby, but on people being removed from Loftus (selectively imo)because of a stand point.

The question now is what will be acceptable in the future at Loftus, and who makes this descision. At the moment it seems that ABSA is making this descisions at Loftus.

    @ Snoek:

I realise that. I am not the 1st guy ti drift of topic in my 1st paragraph
My last 2 paragraphs were on topic.

However once again do we know whether ABSA called the shots wrt the banners or did the union decide this one their own?
I am inclined to believe the latter before I believe a conspiracy theory
