SA Rugby has hit back at SARPA in a strongly worded media release after accusations of dissatisfaction by SARPA and its members with the decisions taken on the blanket ban on all contracted Springboks.

The statement comes after the SA Rugby Players Association expressed their disappointment with the decision to impose a blanket ban on all contracted Springboks.

“No Springbok player or SARPA were consulted or asked for input regarding this decision,” SARPA Chief Executive Piet Heymans said.

“We have received complaints from our members, who are unhappy because they were told at the beginning of the year their conditioning and rest programmes would be monitored on an individual basis.

“They were promised that those needing rest would be afforded such time and those needing game time would be given the opportunity. This has not happened and the opposite could now be true.”

However, SA Rugby has hit back strongly dismissing SARPA’s accusations outlining the issues at hand and that SARPA has in fact been aware of the plans and the specifics to the conditioning program since February 2010.

In a media release SA Rugby states that:

  • All players are primarily contracted to provinces.
  • A number of elite players also accept Springbok contracts
  • SARU cannot prescribe when, or how often, these contracted Springboks appear for their provinces
  • In order to lighten the workload of players SARU set the goal of managing players on an individual basis in 2010 as per the pattern of the 2006 season.
  • Provinces agreed to the proposal earlier this year and are compensated for the time that the players are not available to them.
  • The outline plan was shared with the contracted players and SARPA CEO Piet Heymans in February 2010.
  • Individual conditioning programmes have been provided for the players. The hope was that players’ workloads could be managed on an individual basis in conjunction with their provinces.
  • SARU announced on July 2 that contracted Springboks would be rested for a month, following the Vodacom Tri-Nations. SARPA made no comment at that time nor has SARPA contacted SARU in the intervening nine weeks to raise an objection.
  • The provinces were asked in a conference call this week to treat player resting on a case-by-case basis. Provinces preferred to uniformly rest the players to prevent unfair advantages or disadvantages being created in the Absa Currie Cup.
  • No Springbok player has spoken to team management or the national teams department objecting to the principle either now or at any point in the last nine weeks.

From the latest revelations it seems that SARPA should much rather direct their issues at the unions than at SA Rugby.

Bos, now wouldn’t that be a sweet victory.

    Staat, Vrystaar, shaken not stirred.

  • 4

@ biltongbek: lol…Bulls made a good come-back, but Cheetahs aren’t a bunch of push overs 🙂 Will be a huge game…anything can happen, but I have to support my beloved Vrystaat….Cheetahs to win by 10 🙂

I do not care what SARU’s response is, it is low and pathetic anyway…

It is patently obvious, even for anybody who has very little rugby knowledge (like most at SARU, it seems) that there should be a differentiation between those contracted Bokke who are overplayed and fatigued or suffering niggles and those who are fresh as daisies and itching to get game time.

They might have the contractual right to enforce the Blanket Ban, but there is a difference between a Right in Law and what is actually Right, given the situation and the best interests of rugby in SA.

What, do they think we are stupid?

    Bunch of sorry shits!

One gets 2 types of supporters…. those who are Bulls supporters…. and those who hate the Bulls and want them to lose at all costs….

I think the Staat vs Blue Bulls match is going to be hard, physical, relentless… and could go either way.

    Interesting prospects and mini-battles:

    Daniller vs Kirchner
Adriaan Strauss vs Chiliboy (and Gary Botha on the bench)
Juandre Kruger & Flip v/d Merwe vs Waltie Vermeulen & Francois Uys
    Staat loosies vs Bulls loosies
Francois Hougaard vs Tewis de Bruyn
Meyer Bosman & Robert Ebersohn vs the 2 Stefans
Coenie Oosthuizen at loosehead in the scrum for Staat vs Werner Kruger at tight head for the Bulls
Calldo at tighthead for Staat vs Dean Greyling at loosehead for the Bulls

The last match at Loftus the Staat won by 1 solitary point after a Staat try at the death, since then the Blue Bulls seem to have improved….

    @ grootblousmile:
    That is an incorrect statement.
There are not only two types of supporters.
Watch out you dont creep into your laager….”those who arent for us, must be against us”…totally incorrect and quite an insult to supporters of other unions on this blog.

    7@ 4man:
So, tell me… do you support the Blue Bulls over the Staat, sammajoor?

I know your Bru pick says so…. but what does the heart say?

  • 9

    @ grootblousmile:
I do support the Bulls as my 2nd side…Freestate/Lions is are third….then WP is the last I would consider supporting. That particular pick was an easy one heart and mind work together.
Thats not the point I made though.
I support the Sharks and if they play well and another team beats them, I will always be complimentary about the other team.
I dont “hate” any team, hate is a useless emotion, any team always has something good about them, even Australia…look how many South Africans they have in their side. 😉

  • 10

    9@ 4man:
“Hate” was maybe a bit of an overstatement…. but you get a lot of that from some.

    Glad you like the Bulls…

actually…you are spot on…you are either a bulls supporter or not….if not and you support your own team, then of course you don’t want to see the Bulls win….you would like your own team to win….so YES!!!….I’m part of the 2nd half of your little statement 🙂 I would LOVE to see the Bulls loose against the Cheetah’s this weekend 🙂

    6@ grootblousmile:
I don’t hate any team, I have been a Lions supporter for a very long time, but got fedup with the way their administration ruined them and now don’t support any specific team.

I support the underdog, because I just want to see good rugby. If the Bulls out and out dominate SA rugby, it is not good for the Springbok team, therefor I like it when the log points are close, this way it keeps the Currie Cup interesting.

My first exposure to rugby as a laaitie was WP, then we moved to JHB and hence me supporting the Lions then.

I find I am more objective with watching rugby now, as I support the country and not a province, many of my friends are one eyed when we watch a game with their team playing, and loves to blame referees when they lose.

Because I supported the Lions all my life, I can’t convince myself to support another team, it would be traitorous to do that.

Now I just enjoy rugby, but have to admit, the game of last weekend Lions beating the WP did give me a certain amount of pleasure.

  • 15

    @ biltongbek:just admit it mate…you LOVE the Cheetahs 🙂

  • 16

    @ bos_otter:
    Bos, I smaak them stukkend!

    15@ bos_otter:
I like Vrystaat (after the Bulls of course)… but more so because of my heritage and the fabulous influence Grey College has had on SA rugby.

If it was up to Harold Verster and the doff Free State Rugby Administrators (for a loooong time already), they would probably rate somewhere close to the Lions for me on the richter scale.

  • 18

Hey Biltongbek, hope you see the light again and start supporting the Lions as they climb back to the top?

  • 19

    @ Lion4ever:
I will always have a place in my heart for the Lions, but I am a too passionate rugby supporter, and when it starts spoiling your weekends when your team is losing and then it carries on for a whole winter, and then in top of that it is cold, the risk of slicing one’s risk just gets to great.

So I doubt I will ever allow myself to get that passionate about a team again.

It is bad enough to have gone through this with the springboks for the last year.
