The heads of Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and his two assistants, Dick Muir and Gary Gold, may all roll Today when their performance reviews are done.

While nobody in the leadership of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) wanted to say anything on Saturday about the possibility of the coaches being axed, Sport24 has reliably learned that SARU are definitely considering changes to the coaching staff – and that none of the current three are safe in their positions.

From conversations with a number of top rugby officials and informed people, it appears that De Villiers may just survive. However, Muir and Gold’s days appear numbered following the Springbok team’s weak performances in this year’s Tri-Nations.

South Africa could win only one of their six Tests against the All Blacks and Wallabies.

That was then the Boks beat the Aussies at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria last month.

The coaching staff and team’s performances will be evaluated by a technical committee of SARU in Cape Town on Monday. De Villiers will have the opportunity to put his side of the story about why the Boks were so poor this year.

The technical committee is chaired by SARU vice-president James Stoffberg.

Other members of the committee are SARU president Oregan Hoskins, SARU deputy president Mark Alexander and Golden Lions president Kevin de Klerk.

De Villiers’ big support at grassroots level counts in his favour and may well be the reason that he survives when a decision is taken on the three Bok coaches’ futures.

SARU will, however, have to pay out any of the coaches if they are axed as they all have contracts until the end of next year.

There are a number of candidates that can replace Muir and Gold, with coaches like Allister Coetzee, Rassie Erasmus, Dawie Theron, Frans Ludeke, Heyneke Meyer and New Zealander John Mitchell mentioned by experts as strong candidates.

There is no way that they will admit that PDIV is a failure and get rid of him. Gold and Muir might just, hopefully, be gotten rid of.

The only possibles out of the list that may want to be involved is Allistair Coetzee, he publically supported PDV on resting contracted Springboks.

Dawie theron might see this as a career boosting opportunity.

I definitely can’t see Heyneke Meyer or Frans Ludeke want to wotk with PDV, and from what I have read, Rassie and John Mitchell have already said no.

But I do agree with Loosehead, PDV is not going anywhere.

If somone is terminated for “non-performance” why do they also have to be paid out ?

Surely there are some kind of performance clauses in these contracts ? Or is it just a case of “You did a really :poo: job – here take a big bag of cash & please go away” ? 😯

When a Journalist says he has “reliably heard”… he actually means that the rumour or gossip or speculation or conjecture is such and such….

Snorrie won’t be going anywhere… his assistants might get the chop.. but don’t hold your breath on the choices of new assistants, because what logic dictates and what happens at SARU are 2 totally different things.

  • 5

And hey, if there is no performance clause I would like to apply for the job! 😀

    3 & 5 @ Rugby_Princess:
You can bet your bottom dollar there would be performance clauses, but you could also bet your bottom dollar that their wording will be ambigious or won’t be strong enough to make provision for straight dismissal under these circumstances we have (Divvie’s record is still near or above 60%).

So a pay-out under SA’s very PRO-EMPLOYEE labour Laws & Regulations is almost a given.

Cool – where do I send my resume ? 😉

    7@ Rugby_Princess:
    Let me ask this first:

    1. Have you also got “Foot in Mouth Disease”?
    2. Do you also not get along with the media?
    3. Would your team selections also suck?
    4. Would you also make daft player substitutions?

If your answer is positive to these, you might be the “IDEAL CANDIDATE”…. hahaha

    @ grootblousmile:
    Well, let’s see …

    1. I have been told I am not terribly diplomatic – by a diplomat 🙄 they are such a sensitive lot !
    2. I am sure I could get along fine with those suck-the-life-right-out-of-you pond scum 😉
    3. This part I would happily guarantee 😀
    4. If there was even a hint of potential victory – ABSOFECKINGLUTELY !

So, where do I sign ?

Working for SARU you might just age much quicker than normal… and I know you girls want to postpone the inevitable for as long as possible…. hehehe

Hell bells i just hope we are spared Allistiar Coetzee, moer not again have they got no Heart. We tore him apart in Jakes days, he more than Jake was saved by Eddie.

And dont come with look what he did for WP, dont be dof, he bought the best players bar the Sharks few and the Bulls many, and do you find any silverware in any cupboard down there in the Cape.

Must say the foresight of Danie Craven was good, to have SARU’s trophy cabinet down there.

Let me telling working in Gaming is no picnic either – I think I could take them 😉

WTF is Mark Alexander doing on a Technical Review?

The plonker is a serial Sports Administrator with ZIP Rugby knowledge.

A President of a National Rugby Union in an African country once said to me that Mark Alexander won’t even say “good morning” to you unless he’s first checked the weather outside and held a committee meeting to make sure it is a “good morning”.

As for the other 2 reviewers, well Mr Hoskins is just a…. well administrator I guess, and whilst Mr de Klerk may have something of a playing pedigree, his first year in charge of the GLRU / Lions resulted in their worst performance(s) in the Union’s history.

    F*cking strong Technical committee methinks!

    13@ Scrumdown:
Yip, the quality of the review committee is a serious worry…. no seriously strong balsy chaps there.

  • 15

PdV will still coach the team to the wc. Have no doubt about that. My feeling all of them will stay and they get in some help.

Muir and Gold should go though. Get the Bulls backline coach and the forward coach from Stormers. They would be far better.

Mitchell has already turned the offer down.

  • 16

    @ grootblousmile:
Also, how can de Klerk and Alexander, both associated with the Lions, do a review on Tricky Dicky who also serves as the Lions DOR?

Varking good corporate governance that is!

  • 17

    16@ Scrumdown:
    Yip…

If only SARU actually had a clue what they were doing…. but I suppose that’s asking way too much.

  • 18

    @ grootblousmile:
Seems to me like SARU and the Lions were both spawned from the same loins.

They like to spout off about good corporate governance when it suits them, but conveniently forget about it when it might show them in a bad light or if it doesn’t suit the desired result of something!

They can be thankful they operate in a market that isn’t really free and fair. If they were ordinary business’ like you and I have to run they’d have been forced to close the doors a long time ago.

The people who run this circus just don’t get it.
They will never learn that eventually there is no place to hide.
No coach with any brains will hook himself into the PDV train, so that PDV can remain at the head while he has to worry about the real work.

    19@ tight head:
I would certainly not hook myself onto Snorrie’s Circus trailer, and I would expect no less from good coaches.
