Lambie takes top player award

Cape Town – Vodacom Western Province coach Allister Coetzee and The Sharks centre Patrick Lambie on Wednesday received the Absa Coach and Player of the Month awards at a ceremony held in Cape Town.

Coetzee’s side are currently in first position on the Absa Currie Cup log with 18 points. They are also two points ahead of The Sharks. WP are currently enjoying an impressive run this season and are the only undefeated side in the competition.

Province secured away victories over the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs and the Platinum Leopards and also achieved home wins over the Xerox Lions and the Barloworld Toyota Pumas.

The Absa Currie Cup Coach and Player of the Month competition, which will run during the course of the competition, rewards players who have consistently performed during each month of South Africa’s domestic competition. Coaches are also honoured on a monthly basis for their contribution to their team’s consistent performances.

“It’s a great privilege and an honour to receive this kind of recognition,” said Coetzee.

“However I must admit that rugby is a team sport and I firmly believe that my nomination has everything to do with the on-field performances of Vodacom Western Province. As a team, we continuously strive for consistency. We’ve got a tough game in Kimberley this weekend against the GWK Griquas and it is vital that we maintain our form in going forward.

“Our current position on the Absa Currie Cup log is a direct result of all the effort being put in by the players and management. I would like to thank the judges for nominating me as the Absa Currie Cup coach of the month. I won this award for the Absa Coach of the Month in September last year.”

Lambie represented the SA Under-20s during the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina earlier this year and has been in excellent form for The Sharks during the Absa Currie Cup. He is currently the fifth leading points’ scorer in the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division with 36 points. WP’s Willem de Waal is leading the list with 65.

“I feel extremely proud and privileged to be the Absa Currie Cup Player of the Month for July,” said The Sharks centre.

“I have been enjoying my rugby of late and it’s really awesome that I have been recognised with an award like this.

“However, rugby is a team sport and without the other Sharks players on the field around me I would not have been able to achieve this award. It has been a good start to the Absa Currie Cup for The Sharks, and hopefully we can go from strength to strength in the weeks to come.”

Lambie was also the second leading points’ scorer at the Junior World Champs with 75, seven behind New Zealand U20 flyhalf Tyler Bleyendaal.

Also well done to Allister Coetzee who should really have been coaching the Boks now. Proud of both of them.

Yip, my friend 29 day temp and it is winter buddy. This is sure the place to be. No wonder so many of the Bloem players don’t even give a think about it and come here to play their rugby. Awesome place to be and the beach is right on their door step. 😀

Think that what brings so many Free State players here. The weather and life style. Also only a few hours drive back to visit their parents. Makes one think.

Sorry friend , you wont get me to believe that. Eddie saved hit butt. And with all the money spend to buy a team , yes by the Boss Rassie , no silverware yet. Absolutely no way that i believe he is the man. Nienaber a great import by Rassie is keeping the opponents from scoring against WP. Remember also how few tries they scored in the S14.

No my friend look at Rassie and his structures and lights 😆

    Congrats to Lambie and Coetzee.

Lambie is a rising star, his quality in undeniable, and he seems to have more time to make descisions on the field than most other players.

Would like to see him play 10, it is his prefered position. If he wants to be a serious contender at 10, he would have to work on his goal kicking. But he is young, so he have time on his side.
