Springbok Sevens player Lionel Mapoe has lost his bid to be released from his contract at the Free State Cheetahs.

Sport24 and SuperSport

Mapoe must now arrive in Bloemfontein by Thursday and present himself at the regular Cheetahs practice session, where he is likely to meet with the team management to plot the way forward after a contractual dispute that has lasted for months now.

Mapoe cited problems with his salary as the reason he wanted to leave, and requested, through his agent, Jan-Harm van Wyk a release certificate from the Cheetahs so that he could take up a more lucrative offer from the Sharks.

Mapoe even went as far as to start training with the Sharks for the past few months pending the outcome of the dispute, which was finally handed down on Wednesday.

Advocate Bertus van Rhyn ruled that the Cheetahs have a valid contract with the winger, and that he will have to return to Bloemfontein to play as stated in his contract.

Free State president Harold Verster said he was overjoyed by the result.

“It is great that the arbitration process proved what we knew all along, that we have a valid contract with Lionel,” Verster said.

“He now needs to get back to Bloemfontein today or tomorrow and rejoin the team. He needs to get his head right and play.”

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske also was happy with the result.

“It hopefully sends out a strong message to players that they need to honour their contracts, but we are very happy that we were right all along and that we had a valid contract with him,” Drotske added.

The Sharks weren’t available for comment.

@ Blouste:30 – Blouste, No we not ashamed but rather sad to see him go.

@ grootblousmile:28 – Gbs, I have no idea what will happen. Probably Sharks will ask for the medical fees back and just let it be. Cheetahs have Mapoe back.

Anyhow I am out of here now. Maybe you lost another blogger here gbs. If you Bulls want to have a go at everyone so be it. I will blog somewhere else.

Cheers it has been really good here.

    @ Puma:

Why would you want to leave ?

    Nobody attacked you personally.
We or well me for one thinks the Sharks were wrong in this instance.

No need for you to go anywhere buddy, just healthy discussion me thinks…

No hard feelings on a personal note…

    32@ Puma:
Hoi…. who’s having a go and at what?

We’re discussing what could very well happen… debating a point…

… and the Only one now chucking toys is??

Relax man, nobody is taking YOU on personally…. the verdict has just opened some very real possibilities… and serves as a real President for future negotiations, which should be heeded by all and sundry.

We should all just learn from this contractual experience…

Rugby is all about the money now…such a shame. One of these days the rugby players will be running out like England football players…all jusy concerned about themselves and how much they earn….

I know these guys should be able to earn a living, but still…gone are the days these guys had jobs, and rugby was played for fun and pride.

  • 54

    @ sharky_forever:

It’s not about pointing fingers at all.

We debated the issue previously and had obvious differences of opinion with regards to the credibility of the Sharks.

The matter was put on ice untill we would knew the facts as you stated back then.

Well here are the facts… But as you stated ” I can agree the Sharks did wrong ” so I reckon we are on the same page now.

Thats it. Merely a closing argument on our previous debate if you like.

Look the way I see it, the Sharks saw that Western province did some shopping last year with Jacque Fourie and Habana.

So they they decided to some Lay bye shopping of their own.

    Willem alberts, Killian and Mapoe.

2 out of three isn’t so bad, so they should feel t was a job well done, besides, they still have Mvuvo and pietersen.
