Deon Stegmann, Blue Bulls livewire openside flanker will be out of action for 4 – 6 weeks with a grade 2 hamstring tear.
Stegmann was injured early in the Bulls vs Cheetahs game on the weekend and was in obvious discomfort as he was helped off the field.
This, of course, is not good news for the Blue Bulls who have had to already do without the services of Pierre Spies and Dewald potgieter away on Springbok duty.
Luckily Derick Kuün is there to replace Stegmann at openside and with Dewald Potgieter again available for the Bokke from today.
Deon Stegmann is hopeful of an earlier return than the anticipated time but team doctor, Org Strauss, is conservative in his approach.
“It is a bad injury and unfortunately one of those that we will have to monitor to see how he recovers.”
The Blue Bulls play the Xerox Lions this coming weekend at the Coke-Tin in Johannesburg and Stegmann’s expert fetcher services will thus be sorely missed.
Other injuries at the Blue Bulls include Dean Greylingh, who will be out for 2 weeks due to a disk lesion injury sustained to his neck in the hard match this past weekend. It is indeed a pity that Dean is injured seeing as he has gained a lot of momentum in the position of loosehead prop, with Gurthro Steenkamp away on National duty.
The 4our Springboks who were released from National duty, Flip van der Merwe, Francois Hougaard, Chiliboy Ralepelle and Dewald Potgieter looked hungry to play for the Bulls this coming weekend.
The question now on everybody’s lips is whether Chiliboy will get a starting berth ahead of bandise Maku at the Blue Bulls, but it certainly does not look as if he will be able to get a start ahead of Gary Botha who is also tasked with the captaincy of the Bulls.
Good news is that flanker Ockie Kruger looks set to rejoin his team-mates next weekend along with Springbok centre Jaco Pretorius, both having recovered from injuries.
Bulls should have better balance in the loosies despite Stegmann’s injury, seeing as Kuun is used to play at No 6, Dewald is a No 7 and Van Velze is a No 8….
Pity about Steggies though, would have preferred him above Kuun on the weekend against the Lions.

Ek was daar.. 1ste halfte was die Bulle goed… 2de halfte het die Staat geweldig verbeter.
Daai Coenie Oosthuizen stut van die Staat is geweldig sterk en woellig.
Paar spelers van die Bulle het mynsinsiens swak games gehad… Jaco (Moses) van der Westhuizen veral.
Maar nou ja, Staat het verdien om te wen.

Indien die Bulle dit so doen, en ‘n geballanseerde lostrio in die veld stoot (nie 2 pure fetchers nie), dan kan die poppe weer dans….

Bulle het so paar jong loosies… CJ Stander, jong Bokkies loosie… en Okie Kruger wat van sy besering nou herstel het.
Die combo nou sal wees Kuun – Nr 6, Dewald – Nr 7, Gerrit-Jan van Velze – Nr 8.
Van Velze was Vodacom Cup kaptein, soos 72 smalpielletjies sê, die man werk hard… doen nog paar dom goed, maar hy is goed.
Kuun se beplanning is nie te goed nie: toe hy lekker dikkerig moes wees vir haker, toe is hy te maer. Toe hy nou maer moet wees vir fetcher, toe word hy so dik en daardie simson lokke werk ook nie te goed nie, dink dit is so 20kg boskasie wat hy moet saamdra. As hy so aangaan, is ‘n nekbeserings sy voorland, en nie van skrum nie.
Kyk, bul se kind hou nie van verloor af nie (waar het ek dit al gehoor), maar ek dink die Bulle unie weet wat hul doen: hier is ‘n paar jong spelers wat nou goeie game time kry en dalk oor ‘n jaar of twee groot ysters kan wees, manne soos Greyling, Velsie, Stander, Watertrap, Snyman.
