SARU president Oregan Hoskins says Springbok coach Peter de Villiers is “no worse” than Rugby World Cup winning coach Jake White, adding the two were on par as far as coaching goes.

Sport24 reports

Hoskins has admitted concern over the Boks’ woeful Tri-Nations campaign thus far in 2010, but insisted that sacking De Villiers is out of the question.

“We’re concerned about the losses. We shouldn’t change the personnel. In other words we shouldn’t sack the coach. I wouldn’t say he’s the best coach in the world, but I wouldn’t say he’s inferior to Jake White. I’d say they are on a par,’ said Hoskins in an interview with the Cape Argus.

Hoskins added that it was De Villiers’s oddball character and poor relationship with the media, rather than his coaching ability, that concerned him most.

“My issue with the coach is his media comments. I think that detracts from his ability. That’s where I’d like to concentrate.”

Hoskins confirmed that De Villiers would appear before a review panel in the next week or so, but stressed that there was nothing untoward over this “review”.

When De Villiers was appointed as national coach, Hoskins was open in admitting his own choice would’ve been Heyneke Meyer and that De Villiers’s appointment was based on issues greater than rugby, basically implying it was a transformation appointment.

In 2009 after winning the Tri-Nations, Hoskins said the Boks were a better and happier team under De Villiers than they were under White.

Last weekend White confirmed that he would apply for the Bok job post the 2011 Rugby World Cup, but given the history between Hoskins and White, it’s debatable the World Cup-winning coach would be considered.

My concern also primarily lies with his Media comments and of course losing focus in doing so.

  • 2

To compare their first 2 years or so and say they are on par is fair I pressume, BUT Jake went on to win the WC from there…

Snorre still has all the hard work to do…

Good luck to him never the less….

Wasnt there a hearing of sorts yesterday afternoon with Snorrie and the rugby board, will we get to hear the results of it?

  • 4

    @ Blouste:
I think Snor should have better results than Jake as he didnt have to start from scratch really to build a team, he just needed to tweak it a bit and improve it.

    Q. You’re trapped in a room with a tiger, a rattlesnake and an Australian rugby fan. You have a gun with two bullets. What do you do?

    A. Shoot the Australian fan – twice.

  • 7

    Q. What do you call 15 guys sitting around the tv watching the Rugby World Cup final?

    A. The All Blacks

  • 10

  • 14

    @ bdb:
ek lees Ebersohn was gister af siek….hoop hy is reg vir die game

  • 15

  • 16

Blouste, wie gaan die CB wen ? 😉

  • 17

The credibility of SARU in my opinion is at an alltime low. Whatever is discussed behind closed doors will be “wooled” over in the media.

    16 @ biltongbek:

    Laat ek bietjie dink…..

  • 19

Ok, die CC finaal is oor sowat 90+ dae…

    Klaar gedink…

    Die BULLE natuurlik !!! 😆

  • 20

    @ bdb:

  • 21

    18 Moet lees 16 @ bdb… 😳

  • 22

    19: jy is ‘n rugbykenner. 😀

  • 23

Yeah they are on par at the moment, but the difference was that one’s curve was on the up, and the other one’s going down. I really find it difficult when people are unable to look at things holistically.

  • 24

Hoskins is the biggest jellyfish to ever lead SA rugby.
So anything coming out of his mouth is worthless.

  • 25

You also need to remember that Jake White’s record was built whislt bringing SA rugby out of the dulldrims. PDV didn’t have that challenge.

    So on par, definitely not.
