The Sharks have announced that coach John Plumtree has extended his contract for a further three years.

Winner of Currie Cup medals as both player and coach of the province, Plumtree has renewed his contract with The Sharks until the end of 2013.

Now into his 14th year of coaching which has included stints with Swansea, Wellington, the All Blacks and The Sharks, he coached the side to Currie Cup glory in 2008, beating the Blue Bulls in the Durban Final.

Securing the Currie Cup in 2008 was The Sharks’ first silverware since 1996.

“I am pleased to commit to The Sharks for the next three years as we seek to develop and grow the team for the future,” said Plumtree.

“Just as team continuity and experience is vital amongst playing personnel, the coaching management can only grow with continuity and I look forward to the next three years with the same excitement and passion that has characterised my time with The Sharks in the past – both as a player and in a coaching role.”

Plumtree is currently back in his home country and will be returning from New Zealand on 23 June after attending a coaching course with IRANZ and also observing conditioning and fitness methods in Australia.

Plum had a bit of a wobble at the start of the Super 14 but the Sharks finished well, winning 7 from the last 8….. so for the Sharks I’m glad he stays.

Nothing wrong. What is Streauli doing…he must go.

Is Streauli the problem…. and if so, why?

Sharks had a huge set-back with pre-season injuries, which practically meant they had no settled No 10, 12 & 13… in addition JP Pietersen has been way off form this year, so 4 from 7 backline players were just not up to it…. yet the Sharks regrouped and had an excellent 2nd half of the Super 14.

Streauli cannot be blamed for the lock injuries, or for Hernandez’s injury or for the injuries amongst the centres…. what he could possibly be blamed for is the purchase of Steve Meyer who did not have the balls to be a flyhalf… and then buying Andy Goode.

Other than that, Streauli’s structures at the Sharks are sound…

Sharks need tries, they do not score enough tries, i would have break the bank for centers. 32 last year 31 this year is a bit too low.

@ grootblousmile: Disruptive influence at the union, apparently this was the cause of all the talk about a whole bunch of guys leaving. I must speak to my contact there and see what the issue is. But as I’ve said ultimately I dont worry about the Sharks, they will reinvent themselves.

I suppose I just dont like the guy….not often I say that and I cant really put my finger on it. Oh ja all the cr*p at Griquas…the man showed his true colours and a leopard doesnt change its spots….ever.

@ superBul: We’ll see what centres come thru this year. Nudungane has reached his sell by date too, unless he ahs also been carrying an injury.

    7@ 4man:
Riaan Swanepoel is a very good centre, luckily for you guys Wayward Murray is now a Lion, good riddance to bad rubish.

You have Mvovo and a few other decent backs coming through, Lambie certainly came through nicely.

Bulls are also light on outside centre…

You must have read the interview on the Bulls site with HM?
Well we reap the fruits of that structures now. The confidence factor is high and i can just highlight one of his answers, it means a lot.

“With regards to Basson, he is a world class player, so you are right. We also rate Lionel Mapoe and some others out there.
It is sometimes frustrating to see how little respect other union show towards contracts.
    We can be more aggressive.
Our whole culture is build upon respect for each other, integrity and doing the right thing.
There cannot be grey areas and players respect you for that. We win cups because we stick to what we believe. Often those type of deals come back to haunt you because other players become unhappy of promises made to them and is then not kept”

When you sign a player you make promises, if you replace him too soon the whole camp feel uneasy.

That was the answer to this question.

    Shaun asked:
    Hello Heyneke

Im so happy you back at the bulls, I credit you with bilding to bulls into the powerhouse it curently is.

What are your plans with wing, who in the bulls structures do you see as the future for?

Dont you think Werner Kruger did enough to earn a springbok callup?

With Bjorn Basson, shouldnt the bulls be more agressive in contracting him, I understand than the bulls are professional and respect contracts, but if other unions dont play by the rules why must we?

  • 11

Lionel Mapoe can make a fine outside centre…. although I believe his best position is on the right wing.

  • 12

@ grootblousmile: Mvovo is for the wing…my mind boggles now, hasnt Pieterson gone o/seas? or is it only Ruan?
I agree with Lambie he is still playing age group Boks and I also think he is too light, he is ok at the moment because he appears resilient, but in the week after week cauldron of top flite rugby he will start to feel attrition, his Dad Ian should just say “you are under 21, I am holding you back for one more year, if they offer him the big job”

@ superBul: Two wrongs dont make a right, that is how standards crumble….if someone makes a stand, unltimately common sense prevails. In professionalism in work and sport, there are many things that conflict with my (and I know most Saffers) value system.

Of course the Bulls will be happy with a mediocre coach at the Sharks.

Dont think Plum is the problem, think Rudolph is crap,we need to get rid of him..
