  It was a “ja, no, definitely” weekend for sport. In Cape Town, the Bulls were the “no”, in London Chelsea were the “yes” and in Monaco Mark Webber was the “definitely”.

  Bakkies Botha had a half smile on his face when he faced up to Darren Scott after the Bulls B boys had been beaten, battered, bruised and another word that starts with “B”… oh yes, bliksimmed, in Cape Town on Saturday night.

  That half smile would disappear the next day when a man, who is a freak of nature, was cited by a Freek of a former referee for smashing a half-pint wing. But, still that was in the future. For now Botha had to answer what it felt like to lose to their most hated foe. Was he happy with the way his dirt-trackers had fared?

  “Ja, no, definitely, at the end of the day I’m definitely proud of the boys,” said Botha.

  Was he feeling fit after recovering from that long-term injury?

  “Ja, no, definitely. I pushed myself…”

  Was he confident ahead of the semifinal against the Crusaders?

  “Ja, no, definitely…”

  What was his favourite Oasis album?

  “Ja, no, definitely, it’s Definitely Maybe.”

  Okay, so I made up the final question, but “ja, no, definitely” seems to have become the standard beginning to an answer to a question posed by any form of media. Peter Grant got in two “ja, no, definitelies” before the directors cut away from him, thus hopefully allowing Scott to dish out a swift clip to Grant’s ear. Ja? No? Definitely?

  Agreement, followed by a denial topped off by an emphatic agreement?
  
  It sounds like a stroke of genius by a media trainer, getting players to cover all their bases for future questions.

  “You said you were definitely fit after the Stormers match, Bakkies.” “Ja, but I said I wasn’t as well.”

  It could, also, be a practical joke dreamed up at a meeting of the South African Rugby Players’ Association.

  “Right, Bakkies, you’ll start off with five “ja, no, definitelies”, then you kick in with a few Peter and Allister, we’ll give you a crisp, old R200 note for every time you say ‘you know’ when Darren gets around to you.”
  
  Allister Coetzee would have earned around R2 000 for his display, although he earned it by keeping a straight face when Scott asked him: “Did you have to get VHS tapes to get some info on De Wet Barry?” Nope, Darren, they had to go watch it on betamax – Barry is that old and, on the evidence of Saturday, about as obsolete as betamax. And when is someone going to get Barry to swap his surname and first name into the right order?

  The Stormers-Bulls match came in for some fierce pre-game criticism from Australia and New Zealand after the Bulls decided to rest most of their team. Vic Matfield headed to Sun City for the weekend, while others probably sat at home with their feet up, although there is no truth to the rumour that Francois Hougaard might have snuck off to watch “How to Train Your Dragon”.

  It was a lively match in the first half, rubbish in the second as the Stormers got bored. Before the match we received the news that Robbie Fleck’s wife had just given birth to a little boy, which gave rise to the question as to whether he was playing on the wing for the Stormers. When it was established the little boy on the other wing was indeed Aplon, Botha smashed him at a ruck in a similar manner to that which got him a suspension after the second Test against the British and Irish Lions at Loftus.

  Then the Springboks staged a protest with “Justice for Bakkies” armbands for the third and final Test against the Lions, which earned them a rebuke from the IRB, who wanted to go so far as to ban them from playing in the next World Cup. If Botha is suspended for the semifinals and final, one wonders if the Bulls will wear armbands that read “Justice for Bakkies 2 – ja, no, definitely”.

  The Stormers will not be staging any protest action before their semifinal against the Brumbies. The last time before they played a home semifinal in 1999 the industrial action by the Stormers for more money cost them the respect of the public and probably contributed in no small way to them losing 33-18 to the Highlanders at home. In 1999, the Crusaders also travelled away for both the semifinal and final, and won both. Just a little bit of history to give you something to show off to your mates with in the pub. Use it, don’t use it.

  The Bulls will return to full strength for their historic match at Orlando Stadium this weekend, despite some sillier and whiter than white sillies from Pretoria whispering about “swart gevaar”.

  No fear, good people. The stadium will be heaving, rugby will have taken another step forward, whether the Bulls win or not. The Crusaders destroyed the Brumbies at the weekend and the Waratahs decimated the Hurricanes. Saturday afternoon could be the best four or five hours of rugby the Super 14 or the world has seen.

  Maybe. No, wait… Ja, no, definitely.
