The Southern Kings are making enough noise again to be included in the Super Rugby Competition…. and this time they might have a point, can any South African Team, from anywhere, be as bad as the Lions or maybe even the Cheetahs?

The Southern Kings have targeted 2012 as the year that they will enter the Super 15 in place of either of the under performing Lions or Cheetahs.
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has been working for some time to get an Eastern Cape franchise introduced to Super rugby.
SARU officials committed themselves to the 2012 deadline at a press conference in east London according to OFM radio.
The Eastern Cape has been a breeding ground for black rugby players for many years and with transformation in mind there has been a big push for the introduction of a new Super Rugby franchise.
The poor campaigns by the Lions and the Cheetahs mean they are the most likely candidates to be replaced by the Southern Kings as South Africa’s fifth team in the Super 15.
Buntu Ondala, president of the Border Rugby Union says: “Our target is to say come 2012 and we will be saying: this is the team that we will be putting forward.”
“But we are in the process of building it so we can say this is our team.”he told the SABC.
There is also speculation regarding promotion-relegation matches being played between the worst placed South African team and the Southern Kings for the participation license into the Super 15.
No matter what the outcome there is likely to be more internal battles within South African rugby as neither the Lions nor the Cheetahs are likely to give up their place in the lucrative Super Rugby competition without a fight.
Come on, I support a promotion / relegation system wholeheartedly, let the year’s worst SA Super 15 side sit out in favour of the Kings, then the following year, let the worst team sit out and let the relegated Team back.
So, if you perform kakkest, you are punished for a year…. and someone else gets a chance….

I dont think the Lions or Cheetahs are awefull teams, they just cant seem to win a game thou, something is missing from their recipe 😆
Sports operates on competition. The lowest two teams plus the Kings should play in a elimination competition. The best two play super 15.
I see on News24 and Rugby365 that the SAu20 squad has been announced.

Mjekevu is heeltemal te lig vir Super rugby. Lions will beat the Southern Kings by a mile. Just relegate the Lions, it does not make sense. If the Kings were on the same level as the Lions, then yes I understand the relegation reasoning. Think people think.
Dweeper I fully agree, let them play for it. Lions will keep their spot in Super Rugby if it will be decided by playoffs.
Relegation play-outs should not be considered…. when a team has shown itself to be the worst performing Super 14 team from SA in a season, that is reason enough for relegation…
Get the Kings in, let them sign players, organise a management team… and let them prepare properly… if they then are the worst performing Super 14 SA Team, relegate them in turn…. simple as that!

Here’s the thing, I don’t think it is possible to be worse. Wooden Spoon is wooden spoon…the Lions have a great chance to lose all 13 games this season.
I think its a very good idea and it’ll give a good kick up the back side to the Lions and Cheetahs francishes to get there bloody acts together as there will be incentive for them now to try harder or actually try in this instance 🙂
Guys, think of this. To make it in a S15 setup, a franchise needs a minimum 60 contracted players at leat- 30 experienced dplayers at that level, plus another 30 to be brought along via the Vodacom Cup.
Lets say the first 30 average out at R 600 000-00 pa and the next 30 @ R400 000-00 pa, we are talking R18 000 000-00 plus R12 000 000-00. That is R 30 000 000-00 pa before you have a stadium, have switched on lights, maintained grounds, bought kit or paid administrators and coaching staff, or started to market your product. You probably need R90 to 100 000 000-00 all-in pa to cut it up there, and then your biggest problem is you don’t even have international stars.
So unless the Kings can prove they have that type of backing for at least 3 years that dream is stillborn. And who in their right mind would make that kind of financial commitment without having at least a reasonable chance of their team being in the competition for the term of their commitment.
Why does the government not get involved as a financial backer?

The nice thing about the relegation thing is that, as I understand it, from next year we will all play in our own conferences (with teams having up to 4(?) cross conference games). In that case, even if the Lions, Cheetahs (or whichever SA team in the future), drops out, it will still all happen “internally”.
Plus, a bit o healthy competition has never hurt anyone.
Furthermore, as I understand it, the Kings will have more money than the Cheetahs to start with, and considering the Lions have been doing a but shitze lately, possibly more than the GLRU as well (gov. sponsers, Im sure).
All that the Kings need to do is to combine Border, SWD and EP in both the Super comp and the Currie Cup, pull their resources, buy a few guys like Kockette, Marius Joubert and Joe van Niekerk, and appoint someone like Heineke Meyer. Although good luck with him and Cheeky Twatson working together.

O-ja, must be that because of signings like Spencer and Chavanga, and getting Dick Muir on board everyone thought that THIS MUST BE the year of the Lions… and now that it isn’t (surprise surprise), bring in the Kings.
