Think after the 7th that will be it. Don’t think Bulls will play at home after that if they in a semi. That field looked in terrible condition the last time Bulls played there. Needs at least 4 weeks to get it in tip-top shape for the Soccer World Cup.

Now hope it is not so patched up for when my Sharkies play there. 😀

The often controversial Butana Komphela, chairman of the parliamentary sports’ portfolio committee, yesterday threw cold water on reports that his meeting with the Blue Bulls Company and the Free State Rugby Union today in Cape Town would be to force them to play their remaining Super 14 fixtures away from home over concerns about the conditions of their pitches.

Instead, Komphela denied the allegations that the Bulls and the Cheetahs would be kicked out of Loftus Versfeld and Vodacom Park, respectively, for the Super 14 and showered praise on the Bulls and captain Victor Matfield for their bold move to play the semi-finals and final of the Super 14, if they qualify, at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Furthermore, Komphela confirmed that the Bulls and the Cheetahs would not be forced to play elsewhere – as was widely reported yesterday.

Komphela stated that the meeting was a result of concern over the condition of both pitches during earlier stadium inspections 100 days before the World Cup early in March.

But he said the sports’ portfolio committee would also be seeking clarity on both the unions’ plans ahead of handing over the stadiums to Fifa.

“There are two things that will be discussed; mainly the conditions of the pitches and also to congratulate the Bulls on their move to take the semi-finals and final of the Super 14 to Soweto if they make it.

“The questions we have are from our observations during our inspection 100 days before the start of the World Cup.

“At that time the Loftus pitch was not good at all.

“A report from a Fifa grass specialist said the Loftus and Bloemfontein pitches were not right.

“But after our inspection last week we found that the grass at Loftus is growing very well. We just want to find out what the teams’ schedules are and when they will give over the stadiums to Fifa.

“We realise and acknowledge that they are playing in an international competition.

“Initially when we spoke to the stadium manager at Loftus, he had told us that the Super 14 would run up until the end of May which would give us only 13 days before the start of the World Cup and that was not a nice picture for us.

“However, we don’t want to make assumptions in case they have made alternatives,” Komphela said.

Loftus stadium manager Hugo Kemp was satisfied that the re-seeding at Loftus a few weeks ago was a success and that the pitch was looking immaculate with only three rugby matches scheduled before the stadium is handed over.

“The grass we planted a few weeks ago has grown very well and the pitch is in good condition,” Kemp said yesterday. The Bulls have cleverly diverted an ugly stand-off with soccer authorities following their agreement with the City of Johannesburg to play at Orlando Stadium.

It will also give the Loftus pitch five weeks of inactivity before the start of the soccer spectacular with the Bulls’ last Super 14 fixture being against the Crusaders on May 7.

“When the Bulls were parading their victory in the Super 14 last year, thousands of people of all races celebrated with them and they were exemplary when they showed their support for Bafana Bafana a few weeks ago.

“Such a progressive union led by a leader like Victor Matfield shows that this World Cup is not only for football-loving people alone but for all of us and it is far enough demonstration of social cohesion and we have to encourage them (Bulls),” said Komphela.

    Re: the Poll

Reds will be lucky to make the semi finals. They still have to play the Hurricanes and Brumbies away, but good on them for playing excellent rugby. Will Genia and the thief to get all the credit. Crudasers still got to play the fat boys in the Bull ring and the red hot Stormers away from home. It’s all about home semi finals now, we know they are vital.

9@ Pokkel – They’ve re-seeded the pitch at Loftus… so in other words they have added to the grass, not re-planted.

Will be interesting to see how good and solid the pitch is when it is scrummed on… how easily it breaks up if at all… and how even the colouring has become since before the Tour. The pitch was a patchy mix of colours before the tour.

For the Lions to get there they must do the right thing and hand the Spears the Super 14 berth. 😆
