The Waratahs hosted the Sharks in Sydney, Australia on Saturday morning at 10:40 SA Time on Saturday. This is the match thread for discussion of the game. The match was broadcast on SuperSport 1 on DSTV in SA.

The Waratahs were gifted an undeserved win of 25 / 21 due to inept reffereeing, by Australian Paul Marks and his Australian Assistants, by not awarding the Sharks arguably a penalty try after a deliberate knock by Kurtley Beale, with the tryline clearly open… and by an equally inept TMO, Australian Mathew Goddard, who awarded a try which should never have been awarded. The Sharks were robbed by an Australian officiating team and questions about the absolute need for neutral refereeing will now again run riot.

    GBS

No I have the flu & was face down unconscious on the sofa 😥 but it seems I did not miss much ?

  • 272

    Ola Pumes

You are not satisfied I take it 😉

  • 273

266 – GBS, steady on mate. A clear penalty try? From 20m out, with possible cover defence to come into play? Isn’t the criteria for a penalty try that a try WOULD have been scored if the infringement hadn’t occurred? Not POSSIBLY might have scored – no penalty try in my book. Like you suggest: the good sides don’t rely on ref decisions, they make their own luck!
As for other comments about snotslime and rubbish nation – they would seem to me to belong on an adjacent site – NOT THIS ONE!

  • 274

Puma i am so devastated, i can handle looseing, it happens, but this.

See you all later, think i might just have a girlie cry, the fragile hang over feeling not helping.

  • 275

270 – Puma, g’day mate, you’re obviously upset by the decision and I respect your views. I don’t think either side deserves points – shocking match, I thought.

  • 276

Really feel more heart sore about this loss than any other. Damn I feel for the players been cheated like that. Even listening to Bob now which I never do saying we should have won that game. Bloody cheating refs. Really it is not good for rugby. Something must be done about it. A new rule system if Refs get it that wrong. We should be able to cite the wrong decisions like tries given when it is blatantly not a try and when a penalty try should have been give. Points then should be reversed to the team that should have got them. Bugger really feel angry about that.

I might have missed your answer, did you read the post about the Springbok history, the games about the All Blacks 1970 tour match against Griquas?

  • 278

275 – Hello Old Griquas, Really sorry to go on about it. I feel we were robbed there mate. Even the Aussie commentators saying that was a penalty try. All our commentators here are saying the same.

That was no try at the break either. Should have been a 5m scrum. Replayed it over and over. Could see clear it was not a try. So they did in our studio here. No try. Then at the end should have been a penalty try. Feel really bad for our players. Not the Tahs players fault either mate, It was the ref getting it really wrong. Just not sure how the TMO could have got it so wrong he had access to replay it over and over. Ag, no use now. It is over. So well done to Tahs. Sorry for going on about it but feel we should never have lost it.

  • 279

old griqua what cover defence?? what game were you watching??

there was only one defender left and he slapped the ball down

    look at the replay dude

    THERE WAS NO COVER DEFENCE

  • 280

puma was a shocker and gbs said it as it was

and its true what he says , he hardly ever says a word about a ref

  • 281

now on tv is the SA under 20 team in action live

    then sharks xv live

  • 282

275 – Griquas, Anyhow mate really good to see you here. How you keeping? How is Sydney today? Was suppose to be leaving right now on a business trip there, but have got someone else to go in my place. Also was supposed to go to Chile and never. Thank goodness too, as it would have been right during the time of the disaster there.

  • 283

280 – Sharky, I know. My heart goes out to our players there bud. Jeepers they must feel awful. I hope they know that game was theirs and was taken from em. Shame man it is just not right.

  • 284

    276
Dammit , Sorry Puma. I know how you feel. I would have loved a Shark win. But sorry you can not go that route and change the outcomes later. Imagine us debating games a week back, or more.

What can be done is take that refs of the panel, we must insist on that. Let them get out of the game.

  • 285

272 – Rugby Princess, Well done to your Saders.

  • 286

    Puma

I thought I was in the :pooh: for some unknown reason 😥 & me being sick & all too !

  • 287

279 – sorry mate. I watched the game on laptop via Justin.tv, so I can’t watch replay. However, the shots I did see certainly didn’t cover the field, just the sideline shot, so you have to ask where the fullback, halfback and openside winger were. Nonetheless, if the full field shot shows no cover defence, well, I’ll go with that, but I believe awarding a penalty try from that far out is just too optimistic.

I’d prefer to say the Sharks may have deserved a win because the Tahs were absolutely useless, not necessarily the ref!

  • 288

Hey Puma, mate if you’re ever in Sydney, let me know. I’d love to buy you a beer and have a chat. Sydney is doing well at the moment. I’m working on an aviation aeropark (property development), just a few hours out of Sydney. Struggling with councils and the usual objections, but I’m getting there – only taken 9 years so far!!! Another overnight success… How are you mate?

  • 289

Replayed the possible penalty try incident a couple of times…. there seemed to be no cover defense, but it was far out… maybe it’s slightly and only barely tough to conclude that a try would DEFINATELY have been scored….

  • 290

284 – Super, my friend. Thanks, you are a real rugby man through and through. I appreciate your friendship. Thanks too for going on Sharksworld to support our boys there too. You a good person Super.

Actually thanks to all the Bulls supporters here for getting behind my team today and supporting them. Good saffas all of you. Thanks and my support too will be behind the Bulls when ever your team plays too.

  • 291

GBS – and that IS the criteria. No ifs, buts or maybe – beyond reasonable doubt. Shame the game seemed to hinge on that decision, but there were plenty of opportunities for two less than mediocre sides to get it together throughout 80 minutes!

Now, what’s this earlier post about the old winger with the wonky legs? Don’t make come over there, GBS!

  • 292

288 – Griquas, I am doing very well. I should actually have gone to Sydney twice this year on Business. Should have left right this minute for the airport. Got someone else to go for me. My knees give me too much hassle so always try to get out of the travel part.

If ever in Sydney will always look you up mate. Sydney one beautiful city for sure.

You sound busy Griquas, but it is all good mate. Sounds like it is going good for you too.

  • 293

276, 284 – that’s a true rugby-talk post, in my humble opinion. Good on you fellas, for supporting one another’s teams.

  • 294

286 – Rugby Princess, With Blues and Saders I had to be neutral. I have a good mate on keo (Poppa) and you know he is a kiwi and supports Blues, so first said, go the Blues, to support him, then remembered our lovely kiwi lady here, you RP. So said go Saders and Blues and good luck to both teams, as enjoy both your good company. So congrats again to your Saders.

  • 295

293 – Griquas mate thanks. I sound unsportsmanlike here. I must appologize. Sorry mate. Congrats to the Tahs.

I also think Sharks need to blood some of their youngsters. We have some really good youngsters in the squad and not being used. I say we have now nothing to lose, wont win much so play them and try them out.

  • 296

291@ Olllllldddd Griquas – Hehehehe…. are the knees not wonky??

  • 297

Cheers Old Griquas. Good to catch up with you here again.

  • 298

Okay need to go out. Will be back for the

    FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATSSSS game.

    GO CHEETAHS.

  • 299

    Puma

Hard when sitting on the fence isn’t it ? Don’t worry, I like Poppa too but rugby is rugby & I wud get up in his face about my Saders 😆

It is hard not to get emotional when you feel you have been dealt from the bottom of the deck … Just think it could have been sSOo much worse … it might have been a World Cup QF 😉

Interesting interpretation on Rugby365 about the possibility of the “penalty try” fuss… here is the relevant paragraph:

“Should it have been a penalty try?

It was outside the 22 but the only relevant question the law book asks is whether Kankowski would “probably have scored a try but for foul play by an opponent”. The key word is “probably” – and the assessment for the referee would hinge on whether he believed another defender was close enough to have stopped the try. Or perhaps that the pass was not good, which for all the world it certainly appeared to be.”

My verdict… if this IS the correct criteria…. then the conclusion should have been made that the Try would Probably have been scored, I mean, open try line and just 20 m to run for Kanko who would have received a good pass.
