Vodacom Bulls lock Victor Matfield will appear before a SANZAR judicial committee on Monday after being cited for foul play following Saturday’s Vodacom Super 14 match against the Brumbies in Pretoria.

Matfield was cited under Law 10.4 (a) for striking Brumbies flanker Rocky Elsom around the head area in the 16th minute of the match. The Vodacom Bulls defeated the Brumbies 50-32.

The Vodacom Bulls lock was also cited under Law 10.4 (k) for charging into a ruck without binding onto another player.

The hearing will take place on Monday at 12h00 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

i picked up these comments on Voldys

The reason he being, he tried to save stegman’s life!!!! Elsom had his elbow on stegman’s neck and didn’t let go. Matfield merely did what the ref couldn’t/didn’t want to do. Fark man, then Elsom must also be cited, who is this citers!!!! He will be suspended as it was against the laws but then elsom should surely be cited too! VD Merwe impressed and will probably link up with Rossouw for the WT.

I saw this incident in the match and still commented that Matfield had acted valiantly to counter that Bully Elsom who was strangling Stegmann who was trapped on the ground at the time.

My only complaint was that Matfield hadn’t slammed into Elsom hard enough. Nothing wrong with that charge.

Vic retaliated after Elsom punched one of the Bulls players, Elsom should have been cited 2. But again we shrug it off coz we understand that rugby is a game for men. These Australian cry babies are revolting. Sometimes I think we should identify a game in which to beat the crap out of time, a real 22-man punch-up like you would find in WP club rugby and deal with the consequences later. Give them something to cry about.

1 – Super was just about to say that. Elsom should have got a yellow card there. He had his elbow into Steggmans neck and that is really dangerous. So maybe Elsom should be counter cited too.

Fark me sideways…. having been at the match and the aftermatch Presser…. nothing of this kind was mentioned… NOW going to watch the recording of the match… NOW!!

Wil try and capture some footage of this and place it on here!

I thought that Elsom at the time would have got a yellow card for that. Actually that was such dangerous play he should have got a red. You can kill a player by doing just that. Bloody idiot Elsom. Now they cite Victor? We have to counter site there and get Elsom some weeks off for that.

Elsom had a very abrasive but good game…

When will these citers realise that rugby is not a “Sissies Game”… flok die citing commissioner man… dom drol!

We always know that the citing commissioners targets the Bulls.

Latest news is that Danie Rossouw and Pierre Spies are still/also in doubt.

It seems that the Bulls will be without four of their five top locks fot coming this this weekend.

well then we must play Pedrie at 5, he did so before and not bad at all.Dont forget Fudge too. And VDM was good Saturday.
Remember we have the lock factory of SA.

Joking aside this will be a major blow.

Filp van der Merwe had an awesome game yesterday, and both Victor ad Frans Ludeke remarked on it at the press conference…. but it just seems like Big Vic is the glue holding a lot together at the Bulls forwards. Hugely underrated as captain too by many.

He has no history of citings luckily and it would be such a travesty if he is found guilty and suspended.

Face it, Fudgepacker Mabeta is not close to Vic’s league… so here’s hoping Danie Pakslae is fit enough to play…. will get the low down tomorrow from Ian Schwartz.

THE ACT Brumbies were unable to overcome the Morne Steyn factor but believed they learnt enough against the Bulls in Pretoria to avoid any more sizeable defeats this season.

The Brumbies played well in patches to lead 27-20 early in the second half but the defending champions overwhelmed the visitors in the final 25 minutes for a comfortable 50-32 victory. Steyn’s impact was crucial, with the Bulls five-eighth finishing with 35 points from two tries, five conversions and five penalty goals.

The Brumbies could have complained about the refereeing, particularly when whistleblower Mark Lawrence accidentally obstructed prop Ben Alexander when Bulls halfback Fourie du Preez scored in the first half but the incident had little bearing on the fact the visitors were well beaten.

Brumbies coach Andy Friend later admitted his team had learnt a tough lesson. ”We played the champion team, and they taught us that to be the champion team you’ve got to have intensity for 80 minutes,” he said. ”We had intensity for passages, and I thought when we did we looked tremendous. But we knocked off for too many periods throughout the game.

”Also, our discipline let us down. We gave away seven penalties in a 16-minute period, and against the Bulls that’s going to hurt you.

”We now know what exactly is required. They’re the champion team for a reason. They have a very simple game plan that they all understand, commit and buy into. And they go hard at it for 80 minutes.”

hey buddy, Vic is a good captain when they are winning and the ref is behaving himself, but he lets his head drop too easily, we’ve seen it before. Best lock in the world no question…team Captain, I dont think he is in the top 10, whereas Smit is probably no 1.
